Summary/Abstract: The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the state and the trends of retail lending in Bulgaria. The analysis covers the period from the beginning of our country’s membership in the European Union in 2007 until mid-2016. The study outlines the general picture of the main types of loans extended to households by the commercial banks – consumer and housing loans. The analysis of the state and the trends in these segments of the banking credit market indicates significant changes, caused by the impact of various factors regarding the quantity and quality of loans. The paper extrapolates the main issues and prospects for growth of retail lending.
