Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the European Union energy policy and the basic aspects of its’ implementation such as policy measures, implementation of mechanism, adoption of instruments and legislative packages. It has been pointed out that EU energy policy determines the attitude of the member states towards the energy market, the competition and the security of energy supplies in the period of transition towards low-carbon economy. In this context the question of the necessity of building a European Energy Union has been motivated.
