Summary/Abstract: This article presents the main concepts set out in the EU’s 2050 low-carbon economy roadmap. The ways and measures by which the Union can build a secure and competitive low-carbon energy sector are outlined. The necessity for an integrated European energy policy and for the preparation of a long-term EU strategy for the implementation of the recommendations as defined in the Roadmap is highlighted. A specific project has been identified that will make a significant contribution to the EU's idea of a low-carbon economy - the DESERTEC solar park in the Sahara Desert. The benefits not only for the EU but also for the EUMENA region of implementing this large energy project are summarized.
