Summary/Abstract: In the flagship initiative ‘Industrial Policy for the Globalization Era’ of the EU's strategy for growth in the current decade Europe 2020, the European Commission ensures that "all policy proposals with a significant impact on industry are subject to an in-depth analysis of their impact on competitiveness". As the tobacco industry is traditionally among the leading export-oriented industries in Bulgaria, the policy needs to be complemented by an impact assessment on international competitiveness. To achieve this, the foreign trade performance of this industry field is reviewed through indicators such as the size and dynamics of exports and imports, share in total exports and imports, foreign trade balance and relative trade balance index.
