Summary/Abstract: In the article the author attempts at describing a phenomenon of the author of Cesarz (The Emperor). She points her attention to three literary strategies adopted by Ryszard Kapuściński. He is - according to the author - a reporter, a writer and a translator of other cultures at the same time. The evolution of these three stances is to be observed in The Shadow of the Sun - a book, which records over forty years of professional life of the author of Emperor.
