- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses the established way of reading the novel by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz. The so-far analyses were focused on the thread of the battle of the sexes in the novel, while the following one tries to reveal the vagueness of sexual categories in the work. // Main characters - Władek and Alinka - are interpreted as a couple of castrated heroes. Władek is an androgenic - not to say a feminized - figure, who is/is being a subject to the power of „Mrs. Regina”, who is his substitute-mother. His wife, Alinka, is an imperfect woman. Her aunt - the already mentioned Regina - makes her undergo an abortion, and because a child is a substitute of a phallus - according to Sigmund Freud - thus Alinka is castrated as well. // An attempt at reading the wavering sexual identities of the heroes as the „signs of an unwritten homosexual novel”, which is mentioned by the writer in his correspondence, was made. // In original version, Regina the castrator was to be substituted by a homoerotic hero - Count de la Preyrie. The castrative power of Regina - the hypothesis is advanced - results from the fact that she herself is also a castrated character, who in a vampire-like way appropriates the sexuality of the two main heroes of the novel. // The roundness of the field of biological sex together with the symbolic field resulting from castration - it is the conclusion - makes the consciousness of sexual identity in the piece closer rather to contemporary constructionist concepts of sexuality than to the 19th model of clear sexual oppositions.

- Summary/Abstract:The motive of wandering present in the story written by Bruno Schulz is the center of our interest. The characters of his story often wander because of their spiritual insatiability. Wandering is caused by the imagination of the characters. Threads, which reveal these issues, include the search for cinnamon stores, architecture, spatial Architecture, and hackney carriage ride. // A stray in the world of imagination is at the same time a stray in the real world. The labyrinth is the space of wandering. Life is a cage, a jail (limited by time and space), and the real world is gray, barren; it is an inferno, hell. Jakub and Józio want to escape the ordinariness of life, the material dimension of being. It can be performed through imagination. // Reaching a certain unity, reaching the center is the target of the heroes of the story. However, the satisfaction of spiritual longings can only be achieved beyond life.

- Summary/Abstract:A sketch about a forgotten and the only novel by Adolf Nowaczyński entitled The Youth of Chopin is an attempt at recognizing the research method of the biographer, as well as distinguishing those threads, which constitute the compositional linkages. The writer makes use of the source material in an impressive way in order to vividly recreate the Polish episode in the life of the composer. // The author shows that this book is an unusis biography of Frederic Chopin because it does not take up the description of the music of Chopin, but rather makes one aware of its sources. The composer’s youth becomes a pretext to an interesting story of the narrator - a witness of the cultural and social life of the 19th century Warsaw. // The Youth of Chopin is a biographical essay, which refreshes the views on and tells a few words about the national genius.

- Summary/Abstract:The author of the article asks a following question: why did Harey, a nineteen-year-old woman, the wife [or lover] of Kris Kelvin - the astronaut-psychologist and the main hero of Solaris, a novel, which is considered a masterpiece of the science-fiction genre, committed suicide? This question includes two important aspects: psychological and structural. // The first one demands a research into the participation of Kris in the suicidal death of Harey. The second orders an analysis of the consequences of this fact for the plot course and behavior of the narrator. The above procedures will enable a statement that a moral dimension of life, the order of being decent, which is not eliminated by the great civilization leap, are the central problem of the discussed piece. In other words - the arduous search for responsibility and self-knowledge of Kris Kelvin may mean that the burden of his own guilt can be measured only in his own conscience with Harey’s suffering. This is the true sense of this intergalactic parable. // The intergalactic scenery and outfit of an astronaut mean the same as the journey up the river Congo or the fragile armor of Don Quixote. An adventure story, yes, but the very adventure is a spiritual experience here. Solaris is a novel deeply rooted in the remembrance of the Mediterranean culture, in ancient eposes, in myths (Argonauts, Orpheus and Eurydice), in the Bible (creation of Eve-Harey from the rib (consciousness, conscience) of Adam-Kris), in Immanuel Kant and Cervantes, in picarean and gothic novel, in Moby Dick by Herman Melville, in Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky (Sonia and Rodion), in the Freud’s psychoanalysis of a dream, in the Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim. // Solaris is based on the spirit of Joseph Conrad, as many books written by Lem are, and its basic question is: In the name of what are we supposed to be humane?

- Summary/Abstract:»Dead Language Lesson« is considered as one of the best novels of Andrzej Kuśniewicz and the peak artistic achievement of this author. The article presents an interpretation of this piece; this interpretation is focused around two „keywords”: „lesson” and „collection”, which keep boomeranging in many contexts and become peculiar metaphors embracing different levels of the novel. Learning and collecting often overlap each other to the extent they can be identified (learning is a specific type of knowledge, experience collection; collecting is learning), it happens however that they move in opposite directions, revealing different interpretative spaces. A collection at the level of the world presented (collections of lieutenant Kiekeritz) is a „lesson of things” about culture and history, tells about the fragility of human life, which is a collection itself - a collection of impressions, experiences, and thoughts. A collection at the level of language (dictionary as a collection of words), narration and composition (returning motives, associations, narration through „adding” - multiplication of descriptions, images) is a peculiar type of reality cataloguing. Different collections are joined and separated by death - they are a voice of an intensive experience of life at its end.

- Keywords:Igor Newerly;
- Summary/Abstract:In 1962, Igor Newerly began his work on Living Bond - a book, which was supposed to pave his way for „independence” and the same ensure complete creative sovereignty and freedom, unhampered by any ideological rigors. He chose a set of new compositional techniques, associated with the artistic achievements of the avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century and programs of the French „modern novel”. // First pages of Living Bond prove that it is a book departing from the so far works of the author. This distinctness is particularly clear in the selection of the form of expression - oscillating between a movie screenplay - thus something non-final that can still undergo far-fetched transformations and changes at all levels of work, and materials of autobiographical, document, or fictional character. // An exercise-book character of the novel not only question its final finite form, but also enable a self-creation of the writer - he becomes a hero of his own text and joins its individual segments. // Apart from autobiographical materials, the selection of certain genre conventions serves the authentication of the content included in the piece. These are forms of a diary, journal, letter, essay, chronicle, encyclopedia and „quotes from reality”. // The exploitation of such a great and diverse variety of narrative techniques makes it difficult to classify the discussed work in formal terms and places it among the then realizations of sylvan character and - what follows - the work is placed outside genre structures as a multi-thread and multifarious work. // Newerly’s book is not only a social document and a testimony of the era, or a collection of people belonging to the same communities and environments. It also reveals many features typical for narrative literary forms. // Certain „novelization” takes place in Living Bond, i.e. an intentional creation of a literary message with a certain similarity to a novel but with an assumption that this process cannot lead to a full identification with its structures. Thus, we deal with a transformation of scientific and utilitarian announcements: reviews, dissertation, articles and „quotes from reality” into literary announcements. // The main literary strategy of the author of Living Bond is thus reduced to the usage of only those types of narration and description, which result in a reduction or complete elimination of invented elements and contribute to their saturation with facts, which enables a placement of these realizations among „authentic” forms.

- Summary/Abstract:This article is an attempt at analyzing the problem of the relation of a literary hero with the reality of historical achievements, written in a shape of the world of matter and elements. The author’s argument concerns the novel written by Stefan Kisielewski entitled Shadows in the Cavern, and the main character in particular - Roman Zaleski. In the further parts of the article, the author takes up various aspects of reading the signs of historical transformations of the modern history of Poland, penetrating the psychology of human ideas about own presence in time and achievements. The interpretation of the phenomenon includes a paradox of constancy and changeability as the chief idea for the prose of Kisielewski. That is why the author of the analysis locates the figure of a literary hero in different referential contexts, which create a motive of intelligentsia reckonings with the old world. Much attention is drawn to the explication of permanent relations connecting the sensitivity of a created figure of the hero with the passing of physical and non-physical world. That is why the article is set in the psychological investigations into recognition of reality in its various issues and openings. // A taking up of the problem of searching for a literary form in order to properly express the most important experiences of a highbrow in a world constrained by totalitarian ideas. A struggle with the form is a necessary stage in creating an image of a man wanting to tell about his experiences in only seemingly normal rule of existence. // At the end of the article, the author suggests that the idea of postmodernity appears in the novel. Postmodernity would result in a destruction of a personality of a man in the world of consumption, divestation of axiological identity and departure from historical necessity of making a testimony about oneself.

- Summary/Abstract:The article is an attempt at interpreting a novel entitled A Play with Fire written by Andrzej Szczypiorski. This novel was published shortly before the death of the writer. After ten years from the publication of Początek (The Beginning), the author addresses his new work to a reader who is already familiar with his previous novel and who will link the facts, which search for mutual references. It not only concerns the recognizable thematic references. The location of the novel in the context of the poetics of action novel and other schemes of popular prose is determined through an openly realized convention. A report about the history of the gathering, based on the story of the narrator, is realized as a thread of an investigation in a case of finding the guilty - a seemingly arsonist of a city, in reality responsible for acts committed in the past. The most important thing gets lost in the reports of the course of talks: who is the guilty one. The trails finally become a presentation of the states of consciousness of the informers, not the searched „truth”. // These actions will determine the model of the game, which will be played by the author with the perceptive habits of the reader. The encounter of the heroes with the world of their own past and dilemmas of „here and now” obtains a character of a trial of forces, spectacular struggles, search for the key opening further unknowns in the world at the border of reality, dream and memory. The writer uses a view qualifying the reality in the categories of what is recognized and endangered with immediate obscurity. Memory turns out to be the only sanction, the only point, from which the heroes move onward and backward, in order to recover from the battles with reality, perceived in its threatening unambiguity. This reflection builds up memories, gathers arguments, which amplify within the determined oppositions. Such „hunches” of memory accompany the heroes in their struggle with the unexplainable range of reality. The nostalgic need of order and reference point is a value particularly exposed in the face of constant erosion of matters falling apart in front of the reader.
