Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the extent of changing media environment and how to broaden the scope of media literacy concept. The new media ecosystem requires the development of a multimodal approach to media literacy. Based on а recent sociological research this thesis gives an answer of the questions: How do new media audiences consider their responsibilities in its parallel role as media content consumers and creators, especially in time of crisis? Do nowadays anyone with a smartphone and a social networking profile could claim being a journalist? The main finding of this research is an understanding for a new concept of media literacy, which becomes more and more visible and important in times of crisis. This new concept is needed to add a set of ethical standards for the audiences besides the ability to access, understand and evaluate media content critically, essential skills of inquiry and self-expression.
