Summary/Abstract: During an environment summit in Paris on 11 January, donors pledged $14.3 billion for the creation in Africa by 2030 of a “Great Green Wall”. This 8,000 km strip of vegetation is to extend from Senegal to Djibouti to prevent desertification of areas south of the Sahara. The programme also may stimulate employment and sustainable economic development in a region suffering from security crises and mass emigration.
