Summary/Abstract: Bavaria’s strategy to counter the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to a rise in popularity of its prime minister and the head of the Christian Social Union (CSU), Marcus Söder. This strengthens his chances of winning the nomination for chancellor on behalf of the Christian Democrats in the upcoming Bundestag elections. Söder’s nomination would mean an increase in the influence of the CSU and could complicate relations with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the long run.
