Summary/Abstract: Belgium is one of the founding countries of the European Communities, and it was Belgium that, as the first country in history, assumed the presidency of the Council of the European Economic Community in 1958. Since then, it has tried out the role of president a total of eleven times. In particular, the last two presidencies – in 1993 and 2001 – were very demanding in terms of international and European events. The Belgian six-month presidency in 1993 was marked by speculative attacks on the European monetary system, the entry into force of the Maastricht Treaty and tensions surrounding the nearing end of negotiations on agricultural policy reform within the framework of the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.
