Summary/Abstract: The constitutionalization of the European Union is a gradual process of transformation of the European Union's normative and institutional foundations, which in practice takes the form of changes to primary law (founding treaties) and discussions about them. Over the past twenty years, the European Union has seen many of these changes; it went from Maastricht to the Treaty of Amsterdam and Nice to the failed Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe and the replacement Treaty of Lisbon, not to mention changes related to enlargement.
