Summary/Abstract: In December 2021, the Commission launched a proposal for a directive on improving working conditions in platform work. The initiative has three goals: to address the misclassification of employment status; improve transparency, fairness and accountability of algorithmic practices; and improve the transparency of platform work, including in cross-border situations. - The platform economy presents great social challenges, and national actions have led to fragmentation, endangering the level playing field and making Eulevel legislative action much needed. The directive is equally seen as an important test case for regulating atypical work and algorithmic management in the future.
