Summary/Abstract: The Eastern Neighbourhood is one of the most important regions for the European Union due to its proximity, but it also presents a number of challenges. If the EU really wants to live up to its ambition to be a global power and exert its influence in different parts of the world, as the ambition of the current European Commission for a “geopolitical Union” suggests1, it needs to start as close to home as possible. This goal is served by the EU’s enlargement policy (relevant specifically to the Western Balkans) and the European Neighbourhood Policy, which distinguishes two initiatives – the Eastern Partnership (EaP) and the Union for the Mediterranean.
