Summary/Abstract: The last decade has seen dramatic changes in the European security environment. The Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014, together with China’s growing geopolitical ambitions and Washington’s isolationist and unilateralist foreign policy under President Trump’s administration, have forced European Union (EU) member states to deepen defense and security cooperation and strengthen their defense capabilities. The Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 not only brought war to the EU’s eastern border, but also significantly accelerated the efforts of member states to dynamically develop their own common security and defense structures and policies aimed at ensuring the EU’s stable position in the geopolitical world order.
