Summary/Abstract: The reduction in the number of reported COVID-19 patients in China could help the Chinese Communist Party’s leadership in the short term. The public’s dissatisfaction has been reduced by dismissals of officials and internet censorship. In the long run, though, Xi Jinping’s position may be threatened by the deteriorating economic situation. China is taking advantage of the pandemic by offering help to combat the virus to other countries, including EU Member States. The Chinese leaders aim to stimulate domestic production, strengthen relations with the EU—China’s most important trade partner—and reduce the risk of European companies withdrawing from the country.
