Summary/Abstract: Taiwan’s successful response so far to the coronavirus pandemic is the result of experience with the original SARS outbreak in 2003. It strengthens Taiwan’s international position as a well-functioning democracy and a modern state. This is in line with the objectives for the second term of President Tsai Ing-wen, who wants to emphasize the island’s separateness from mainland China. Taiwan’s experience might be helpful for the EU in developing better procedures for rapid responses to epidemics and an impulse for deepening bilateral cooperation.
