Summary/Abstract: The European Commission’s (EC) initiative to convene a conference on the future of Europe is an attempt to return to the discussion on reform of the EU, which was inconclusive on several important issues such as the future of the eurozone. French President Emmanuel Macron, one of the major proponents of the conference, hopes that it will provide new impetus to his ideas for change in the EU. The largest political groups in the European Parliament (EP) aspire to play a leading role in the conference. The majority of Member States, however, would like to avoid a debate on more comprehensive reforms that would involve treaty changes.
