Summary/Abstract: President Klaus Iohannis, associated with the National Liberal Party (PNL), began his second term on 21 December 2019. This strengthens the minority cabinet of Ludovic Orban because, for the first time since 2012, Romania is ruled by a president and prime minister from the same political stripe. This will help to improve Romania’s further relations with EU institutions, strained by the previous coalition’s attempts to weaken the fight against corruption. Probably, the Orban government will avoid significant reforms because, in the face of parliamentary elections at the turn of 2020 and 2021, its main goal will be maintaining PNL’s popularity.
