Summary/Abstract: Tension between the U.S. and South Korea has been growing in recent months. The U.S. administration demands its ally pay substantially more for stationing American troops on its territory. In September, negotiations on this issue began. The U.S. also has been seeking active South Korean support for the American strategy to contain China. However, the responses by the South Korean authorities have been restrained, which limits the U.S. potential to compete with China. Financial solutions to the dispute over alliance costs with South Korea may be applied by the U.S. to its European allies.
