Summary/Abstract: The European Council accepted an extension of the UK’s exit period from the EU until 31 October. The conditions, though, included no further negotiations on the Withdrawal Agreement (WA) by the EU and the UK’s commitment to participate in the European Parliament elections. At the same time, however, the political crisis in the UK has fundamentally limited the freedom of action of both the UK government and its two dominant parties. The scale of the British crisis was demonstrated by the local and European elections in May. Since the crisis probably will not be resolved by autumn, EU leaders are likely in October to face another decision concerning the further postponement of Brexit.
