Summary/Abstract: Hungary’s decision to seal its borders has led to the opening of a new migration route through Croatia and Slovenia. Although the migration policy objectives of the Western Balkan countries are similar, the authorities in each do not cooperate, but compete, thus undermining neighbourly relations. Croatia is in a particularly difficult position, as its opportunities for effective action are limited due to the parliamentary election campaign. The stability of the Balkan route is dependent not only on the strategies of individual governments, but also on whether Germany and Austria will close their borders; such a decision would cause a domino effect that would force transit countries to work to dissolve the migration route.
