Summary/Abstract: In Ukraine’s local elections, scheduled for 25 October, the most important battle will be between the strongest parties of President Petro Poroshenko’s Solidarnist (Solidarity) and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko’s Batkivshchyna (Fatherland). The latter is again a top Ukrainian politician and certainly wants to play an increasingly important role, an ambition which may result in conflict with the president. The election results will reveal the strength of Ukraine’s pro-reform and pro-European groupings. The EU should continue to support Ukraine’s reforms, including local government changes, because it involves not only improving the functioning of the state but also is part of the implementation of the Minsk agreements.
