Short Description

The journal "The cultural heritage of Varna and the Black Sea region" is dedicated on history of Varna and the ancient Odessos. Еarly written sources indicate that the ancient Odessos /Varna of nowadays/ was established as a colony of Millet, a city in Greek Asia Minor, in the second quarter of 6-th century BC. This was the period of the so called Great Greek Collonisation. The name of the city - Odessos means a settlement on water i.e. "Watertown" and is not from Greek origin, which indicates the existence of an earlier settlement in the area. The city developed as a classical polis type. At a certain time Odessos became one of the most significant ports and trade centres in the Black Sea area. It happens to be on the crossroads between Western Europe and the Middle East. Nowadays Varna is the third largest city in Bulgaria, with an area of 205 sq. km.
