Postmodifiers as Intensifiers in Romanian Adjectival Phrases

The aim of the present paper is very modest: I propose to uncover some of the properties of those Romanian adjectival phrases where the postmodifier, functioning as an intensifier, is expressed by an adverbial noun in singular. The interest is both in adjectival phrases such as ud leoarcă ‘very wet’, gol puşcă ‘completely naked’, or singur cuc ‘completely alone/lonely’, as well as in participial structures such as îngheţat bocnă ‘frozen solid’, beat turtă ‘very drunk’, or supărat foc ‘very angry/upset’. The discussion also extends to some comparisons between the canonical absolute superlative and these phrases with superlative value.

In the present article we are proposing an overview of the intellectuals involved in translating the major works from the French literature for the Romanian readers, during a decisive period for the modernization of the Romanian culture. Our analysis will be focused on the biographical and sociological approaches, considering that even concise information on the lives and activities of these people will help us better understand who they were and why they wrote a remarkable page in the history of the Romanian translations. First, we ought to mention the particular nature of the ties between Romania and France. If up to the 18th century, the contacts between the Romanians and the French were considered sporadic and quite lacking intensity, along with the rising to power in Wallachia and Moldavia of the Phanariot families, we observe the outstanding penetration of the French literature, either as original works, or as translations. The French influence continues to grow wider in the following century, France playing a major part in all the main events in the history of the principalities and the making of the modern Romanian state. Even since the second half of the 18th century, Wallachia and Moldavia began to re-open to the West, wherefrom Enlightenment ideas radiated towards all corners of Europe. A smaller number of religious and secular personalities were involved in Wallachia and Moldavia in making translations from the French literature. Romanian translators of the 19th century continued the efforts of the pioneers from the previous century and had a great contribution to align the two principalities along with the other cultures on the European continent. The importance of translation in the 19th century can be proven by the considerable number of writers and poets who took part in this complex process. The emergence of the Romanian female translators was a fundamental change during the 19th century that substantially increased the number of the intellectuals involved herein. Although significantly lower than the number of the male translators, this novelty reflects the ongoing mentality changes in the Romanian society.In these circumstances, the translations are perceived as strong points of support in the evolution towards the originality of Romanian culture and as effective tools of educating the people. Restricted by the authorities' constraints, influenced by the public's preferences and, equally important, by their own possibilities, the Romanian translators from the 18th-19th centuries left us a rich and precious heritage reflecting the characteristics of the tumultuous historical context that led to its creation.

Throughout history, we have records not only of unique, unrepeatable events, butalso of personalities who stand out through a series of traits that turn them into exceptionaldestinies. Two such examples are Princess Ileana of Romania and Father ArsenieBoca, both special figures of the twentieth century in Romania. Although their liveswere completely different, given their origins and the course of their lives, they intersectedat one point. Their meeting led to a special friendship, that was unique, consideringthe difficult years at the end of World War II and the beginning of the Communistregime in Romania. Our paper, which brings to the readers’attention a series of unprecedentedinformation and documents, presents a unique page of Romanian and Churchhistory. Consequently, we may gain a better understanding of the context of the closenessbetween Princess Ileana of Romania and Father Arsenie Boca, the controversiesrelated to the moment of their encounter, the evolution of their friendship. We will notforget to discuss the influence Father Arsenie Boca exercised over the choice of PrincessIleana’s future monastic life, who later became Mother Alexandra.

The Functioning of the Ludic Imperfect. In this paper we propose a hypothesis about the functioning of the ludic imperfect starting from an analysis of an oral corpus in Romanian. Considering that the meaning of the ludic imperfect derives from the interaction of its core of semantic features with semantic elements from the cotexte (ziceam că and other verbal tenses) as well as from the context (symbolic play interaction), we'll present, as a first step, some characteristics of the symbolic play relevant for our analysis, then we'll resume the different approaches of the ludic imperfect and finally we'll formulate and illustrate our explanation about the specific role and functioning of the imperfect in the symbolic play. Associated most of the time with the formula ziceam că meaning « let's pretend that », the ludic imperfect is used especially in order to signify that the processes taking place belong to another world, created by the speaker's discourse, a fictional world.

The article presents a couple of pragmasemantic directions of the usage of the fixed comparative constructions containing names of plants, animals, birds and insects. The language facts in canonical form – i.e. structured around like as the phrase index – were analysed from more viewpoints: formally, as to their source fields, stilistically; our analysis was followed by an in-depth research of article titles where such structures occur with a modified structure.

The article addresses the way in which the evaluative adjectives, integrated in the discourse of travel guides, reflect the subjectivity of the enunciator. In a comparative approach, our objectives are to identify, classify and semantically analyze the evaluative adjectives, frequently used in the discourse of current tourist guides, having the same reference, Romania, from both the Romanian and the French space. In travel guide, the declarative instance produces an informative but also a prescriptive speech. The use of axiological evaluation adjectives, which focuses on topics such as authenticity, beauty, notoriety, excellence, etc., is one of the ways to introduce the enunciator’s subjectivity into the tourist text, in order to convince the reader. The interpretation of subjective semantic elements is related to the culture in which the text was written. By exploiting computerized techniques, we submit the corpus of statistical analyses to identify the frequently used adjectives that allow to enhance the qualities of a destination (Romania), in order to convince potential tourists. We consider that a work on this issue is relevant given that Romanian studies have approached the marks of subjectivity in the reception of the poetic text and analyzed the media discourse in terms of subjectivity, but, a complex analysis that would identify and interpret the role of evaluative adjectives in the speech of tourist guides has not been elaborated yet.

In 2005, The Romanian Academy published a new Romanian Language Grammar, four decades after the last edition of the previous Grammar. The event sparked a lot of controversy, even indignation, especially among those familiar with the old grammar and unwilling to embrace the interpretations of a new one. Only five years after this publication, a group of researchers separated themselves from the 2005 edition’s authors and clustered around Professor Gabriela Pană Dindelegan, into a team of scholars who undertook the toilsome mission of aligning the Romanian grammar to the European research manner. The list of these works, purposefully set up in chronological order, offers on overall view of the researcher groups that have put an effort in this direction over the last ten years. The present paper addresses both the Romanian native speakers and those interested in the grammar of this language. It brings under scrutiny three segments: the pronominal clitics, verb voices and the prepositional complement.

What are the obstacles historical research on antisemitism in interwar romania has to face? Two different narratives shape the memories of contemporary witnesses: On the one hand, Romania was a land of an active, even violent antisemitism. On the other hand, Romanian antisemitism is described as a short-term upsurge in the context of peaceful coexistence. How can these different assessments be explained and brought together? Every research overview needs guiding standards. For the purposes of this essay, the assertions of theories of antisemitism will be asked. How is antisemitism defined? What were its causes? What were the different types of antisemitism? As a result, a thoroughly differentiated picture emerges. Research on Romanian history after 1989 has filled many gaps. This above all applies to the ideology of antisemitism, but also to broad areas of political antisemitism. Religious-institutional antisemitism has been well studied, with a focus on ecclesiastical publications. In addition, there are fields of research for which initial results are available (e.g. physical violence). Finally, there are whole areas for which studies are still pending, especially on the regional, social, and cultural history of antisemitism. We cannot yet conjoin the two mentioned narratives on Romanian antisemitism in the interwar period. But it should be clear which research steps are to be followed.

The Dictionary of Grammar Interpretations. Little words, Great difficulties continues the series of works of modern Romanian grammar (The Grammar of Romanian, The Basic Grammar of Romanian, The Grammar of Romanian for Gymnasium).The purpose of this collective work is to inventory, describe and solve some of the grammatical difficulties. Thus, the dictionary is a list of „little” words, namely lexemes whose phonetic/graphic body is (very) small, but which raises major problems of interpretation from a morphosyntactic point of view.
