This paper deals with three phenomena specific to old Romanian: pre-head complements to adjectives (i.e. head-final adjectival structures), post-adjectival degree markers, and discontinuous adjectival and degree phrases. Following recent work by Ledge-way, we defend the hypothesis that the old Romanian adjectival phrase preserves relics of the head-final and non-configurational syntax of Latin. The fact that pre-head complements of adjectives and post-adjectival degree markers represent a genuine instance of head-finality (i.e. roll-up movement) is reinforced by the existence of discontinuous adjectival phrases (the hallmark of non-configurationality), discontinuous structures being unavailable in harmonic head-initial systems (Ledge-way forthcoming b)

Romanian displays two types of complex PPs (i.e. PPs formed on at least two simple Ps), which may attach to Ns. The first one is headed by a combination of two (and very rarely three) lexical Ps, e. g. dela ‘from’, pe sub ‘under’, pe lângă ‘near’, de pe lângă ‘from near’ (e.g. venirea lui de la Londra (his coming from London)). The second type is headed by acombination of one functional P (namely de) and one lexical P, e. g., de la ‘from’, de pe ‘on’, de sub ‘under’, de lângă ‘near’ (e.g. cartea de pe raft (the book on the shelves)). In this paper, we take a closer look to these two types of prepositional constructions. Firstly, we examine the various morpho-syntactic and semantic constraints under which the different constituents of the complex PPs may fall (e.g. the categorial status of the P’s complement (NP vs DP), and correlatively, the absence or presence of a determiner, their syntactic function (argument vs. modifier), their semanticinterpretation (specific – non specific)). Secondly, we pay special attention to the analysis of de occurring in the second type of complex PPs. In this respect, we show that complex PPs in type two are not genuine PPs and that de is not lexical, but the overt realization of a functional category (namely, Mod(ifier)).

In this paper, we argue for the existence of two local domains (phases, cf. Chomsky 2001; 2009; Legate 2003, among others) inside the DP: the n*-phase, parallel to the vP (as in Svenonius 2004), and the d*-phase, parallel to the CP. Two acknowledged phasal properties are discussed. (i) The n*/d*-phases define their own peripheries: peripheries are essentially modal-quantificational spaces, as shown by the decomposition of Topic–Focus features recently proposed (Butler 2004; McNay 2005; 2006). (ii) Phases are assumed to be domains of linearization: after (internal or external) merge, syntactic objects are hierarchical, but not linear, so phases must be linearized before they are sent to PF. The distribution and interpretation of DP-internal adjectives is taken to be indicative of these two domains.

În articolul de față realizăm o analiză a construcțiilor cu adjective gradate în textele vechi românești. Ne oprim asupra comparativului de superioritate, astfel că avem în vedere, în primul rînd, stadiul de gramaticalizare a operatorilor de grad implicați. Structurile înregistrate în textele vechi includ unități polifuncționale în competiție, dintre care unele intră în procese complexe de specializare (mai), iar altele dispar (camai). În al doilea rînd, prezentăm realizările complementului comparativ în corpusul analizat: grupuri prepoziționale avînd drept centru prepozițiile de, decît și ca. Ne interesează în ce măsură se pot stabili restricții de utilizare a acestor prepoziții. Vom acorda o atenție specială „anomaliilor” de topică a unităților. Configurațiile în care complementul comparativ este antepus adjectivului se pun în legătură cu existența unor urme ale sintaxei nonconfiguraționale în limba română veche.

In this paper, we analyse degree adjectival constructions in old Romanian texts. We focus on the comparative of superiority, taking into account in the first place the grammaticalization stage of the degree markers. The structures from the old texts contain polyfunctional units in competition; some of them enter a complex process of specialisation (mai ‘more’), while others disappear (camai). Afterwards, we focus on the realizations of the comparative complement in the corpus analysed: prepositional phrases headed by the prepositions ca, decît, de ‘than’. We want to see if we can establish any constraints in the use of these prepositions. We pay attention to the word order disharmonies encountered in the old texts. The configurations with pre-adjectival complements are related to the existence of certain relics of the non-configurational syntax in old Romanian.

The article aim is to present the political trial involving an intellectual group gathered around Virginia Munteanu- the sister of the anticommunist writer and journalist, Pamfil Șeicaru-and to outline the political and literary biographies of those writers who were condemned to many years of imprisonment for the crime of public agitation by the Sentence no. 474 from 8 April 1957 of the Bucharest Military Tribunal.

As member of the research team Wallachian and Moldavian Testaments (from the 17th century to the first half of the 19th): social, patrimonial and religious implications I revived an older project of mine, of editing some Moldavian testaments from the 17th and the 18th centuries. The present study comprises a first group of such documents, including 17 testaments. Of these, 11 are edited for the first time (at least to my best knowledge!), 4 are published for the second time (hopefully, in an improved version!), while 2 of them had been previously known only through some summaries. Each document is accompanied by an analytical and historical introduction, consisting of brief comments on the witness list and on the social, patrimonial and moral issues involving the testators and their families.

Accommodating the Abstract Noun in Philosophical Terminology

The study proposes a descriptive-semasiological research of the terminology in the field of philosophy. The relationship between the hard nucleus and the external areas of this sphere of terms, accommodation of abstract nouns in the language of philosophical terminology, identification of opposition markers at specialization level are a few of the objectives set out. The means of maintaining unambiguousness of terms are another focal point for this research. Contrastive analysis, descriptive-linguistic methods and semasiological study are used. One of the conclusions of the research is that the hard nucleus of the philosophical language is the sphere with the highest stability, maintaining a high degree of abstraction. External areas are common variants, migrating from one language to another, having an interdisciplinary character.

The paper presents File 3/1900 from the Putna Monastery Archive, which contains the autobiography of Teofil Patraș, hegoumen of Putna Monastery between 1901 and 1917, the 1904 Putna Celebration, which marked 400 years from the death of Stephen the Great, information on Vasile Renney of Herszeni, hegoumen of Putna Monastery (1898–1900), on the visit of future King Carol II of Romania to Putna, and also information on Metropolitan Vladimir of Repta and Visarion Puiu of Cernăuți and the beginning of the First World War, 1914–1916. The most extensive part is the detailed description of the 1904 Putna Celebration. It mentions the stages of the organization, the members of the organizing committees – starting with Iancu Flondor, and the names of the participants. It includes the texts of the telegrams with supportive messages and the speeches made by Priest Zaharia Voronca, Priest and Professor Teodor Tarnavschi and historian Dimitrie Onciul. The file also contains press articles on the celebration and a description of the wreaths brought as gifts to the monastery. Special attention is granted to the participation of the President of the Duchy of Bucovina, Prince Konrad of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst, and to the attitude of Bukovina Romanians towards Emperor Francis Joseph I. For the history of mentalities, the 1904 Putna Celebration is a continuation of the First Putna Celebration of Romanians from All Over the World, held in 1871 to honor Stephen the Great as a founding fatherer, a model and a patron saint of the Romanians. The texts in the file underline the loyalty of the Bukovina Romanians to the Austrian Empire and at the same time their awareness that they belong to the Romanian nation. The two belongings are in balance as the state allows manifestations of Romanian identity and the Romanians are good citizens.
