The journal is refereed by international specialists and officially acknowledged by the Romanian National University Research Council (CNCSIS). Studia Europaea is covered by several prestigious databeses, such as ProQuest CSA Worldwide Political Science Abstracts, ProQuest CSA Sociological Abstracts or Central and Eastern European Online Library (CEEOL). Each article is reviewed by two independent academics in a “double-blind” system. Senior as well as junior academics from Europe and from the United States have found in Studia Europaea a way of expressing their preoccupations by publishing academic articles that have focused on the European experience and perspectives in various fields of social science.

The starting point for our paper is a stereotype that is still true of the academic environment, stressing the pre-eminence of books in the processof gathering reference material. Some experts even advise resorting to online resources only after allthe traditional ways of documenting a topic have been exhausted. In practice, these approaches prove to be superannuated, as even the most conservative fields of knowledge have shown interest in what the internet has to offer. The way undergraduate students usually gather supporting documentation shows that most scientific papers can be drawn up at an acceptable level by resorting uniquely to onlineresources. In this paper we are going to examine the way of doing effective documenting work, but we will also shift the focus on some practical aspects, and analyze the right approach to quoting internet sources. Researching bibliographical sources is important in the students’ scientific activity, since each statement within a scientific text must be accounted for. The purpose of documenting a topic is to identify those sources of information that prove useful both in the structuring of the theoretical framework of any paper, and in providing the scientific basis for practical applications. All the theoretical premises in the literature in the field must be indicated in all honesty, so that any reader can identify them, and any suspicion of plagiarism is ruled out. We will review the principles of documenting, focusing on those which aim the subject matter, objectives, directions, and methods of doing documenting work, particularly with reference to online sources. We will show what the differences in approach consist in, when we no longer do research in libraries, but look for information by exploiting the inexhaustible potential of the virtual environment. In addition, we will uncover some of the tricks that can be used in order to make more effective the results of search engines, and we will also give some tips on the credibility, and opportune times of various categories of online documenting resources. If the information provided by the internet has proven useful, and been organically integrated within the body of the paper, then it will have to be acknowledged in the critical apparatus of any scientific text. The ways of recording online sources differ from those used for classical bibliographical resources, only to the extent that there is no counterpart in the printed format, no matter which of the standard quotation systems has been chosen. Taking into account the ever growing trend towards using online resources as sources of information for research and documentation in a formative education system, the present paper has a pronounced practical character.

Detrending time series trend is a very important research topic for the economics of economic cycles, yet up to this moment no consensus has been reached on the methods used, which makes it a controversial topic. The papers made on the comparative analysis of time series exclusion trend are based on relatively large samples as to what we have available in Romania. The initiation of the passage to a market economy starting with 1989 meant for Romania changes in statistical records at that time and afterwards, therefore the samples we have available for the study are relatively limited as to samples from developed countries. Moreover, while the analysis for USA is made on values of the gross domestic product at a monthly rate, for Romania the values for the gross domestic product we have available are at most at a quarterly rate since 1998. Our analysis was conducted on the business cycles of variables representing fundamental indicators of the evolution of an economy on a quarterly basis during 1998.1 – 2011.3: gross domestic product, the final consumption, the working hours, the real wages, the productivity and the capital stock. To estimate the business cycles of variables we took into consideration the polynomial functions of time, the first order differences, the Beveridge-Nelson decomposition and Hodrick-Prescott filter. The results obtained are in compliance with the previous research performed on the economies of other countries.

The author of the article presents the reasons why modern film series are considered to be high quality products surpassing the cinema. Mazierska analyses their textual properties, as well as the typical way of consuming them, referred to as binge watching or feasting. She also tries to assess their value from the perspective of promoting egalitarian values and the ideal of amateurism. The text is based on rich empirical material, but special attention is given to three particular series: “Lost” (2004-2010), “Prison Break” (2005-2009) and “Breaking Bad” (2008-2013).

REFII1 model is an authorial mathematical model for time series data mining. The main purpose of that model is to automate time series analysis, through a unique transformation model of time series. An advantage of this approach of time series analysis is the linkage of different methods for time series analysis, linking traditional data mining tools in time series, and constructing new algorithms for analyzing time series. It is worth mentioning that REFII model is not a closed system, which means that we have a finite set of methods. At first, this is a model for transformation of values of time series, which prepares data used by different sets of methods based on the same model of transformation in a domain of problem space. REFII model gives a new approach in time series analysis based on a unique model of transformation, which is a base for all kind of time series analysis. The advantage of REFII model is its possible application in many different areas such as finance, medicine, voice recognition, face recognition and text mining.

Because of an increasing interest in cryptocurrency investments, there is a need to quantify their variation over time. Therefore, in this paper we try to answer a few important questions related to a time series of cryptocurrencies. According to our goals and due to market capitalization, here we discuss the daily market price data of four major cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Ripple (XRP) and Litecoin (LTC). In the first phase, we characterize the daily returns of exchange rates versus the U.S. Dollar by assessing the main statistical properties of them. In many ways, the interpretation of these results could be a crucial point in the investment decision making process. In the following phase, we apply an autocorrelation function in order to find repeating patterns or a random walk of daily returns. Also, the lack of literature on the comparison of cryptocurrency price movements refers to the correlation analysis between the aforementioned data series. These findings are an appropriate base for portfolio management. Finally, the paper conducts an analysis of volatility using dynamic volatility models such as GARCH, GJR and EGARCH. The results confirm that volatility is persistent over time and the asymmetry of volatility is small for daily returns.

Given the high and rising household debt in Malaysia, the objective of this paper is to ascertain the characteristics of a financially vulnerable individual. Financial vulnerability is measured based on two indicators: the debt-to-income ratio and the level of emergency savings for income shock. The findings of this paper show that, in addition to socio-economic factors, other factors such as risk tolerance, savings portfolio, and individuals’ objectives and subjective financial knowledge can significantly explain differences in the levels of individual financial vulnerability. Using ordered probit on primary data consisting of 854 working adults aged 18–60, it is found that gender, ethnicity, income, number of dependents, age and education can significantly explain differences in the levels of financial vulnerability. Furthermore, the findings highlight the importance of continuous efforts to provide financial education to improve personal financial management. The findings also confirm that risk takers are more likely to be financially vulnerable. However, individuals who diversify their savings channels to include stock and bond holdings instead of solely saving through bank deposits are less likely to be financially vulnerable.

This paper investigates the pragmatic dimensions of Prospect Series, Iranian high school textbooks, and the extent to which these books can be reliable sources for developing language learners’ pragmatic competence. To do so, Cohen’s and van Ek and Trim’s taxonomies of speech acts and functions were employed to manifest whether the books are pragmatically suitable. The data analyses revealed that all types of speech acts were present, although unequally, throughout the series, except Declaratives which has been ignored in the conversations of Prospect 1, 2 and 3. Lack of Declaratives is a big disadvantage. Additionally, all kinds of language functions were present in the textbooks but rather erratically and unevenly. The findings seem to imply that lack of Declaratives, and unequal distributions of language functions and speech acts may limit language learners’ pragmatic competence, which can lead to misunderstandings and miscommunications. To compensate the drawbacks, several implications were provided.

Criminal investigators, scientists, mental health experts, and the media have always studied serial killings. Since Jack the Ripper in the late 1800s, and even today, attempts have been made to understand the complex issues surrounding the investigation of serial murders and the motives for these horrific acts. The topics of serial killings are attracting too much attention from the media, academia, and the general public. Nordic crime series make a special contribution to identifying and analyzing many issues related to serial killings including common myths, definitions, typologies, pathology and causality, media role, prosecution issues, organization of investigations, and especially through the affirmation of forensic psychology and criminal profiling. We believe that scientific papers dealing with this topic can be useful in generating an effective response in identifying, investigating, and reaching verdicts, and strengthening the collective ability to understand, respond and act preventively to prevent these violent and serious crimes.

The changing social and economic conditions of the XXI. century as well as the rapid technological development and the coronavirus pandemic have a significant impact on employment. Consequently, in order to maintain effective protection against new and emerging risks, appropriate legislative action is essential, which can create opportunities for employment law actors to adapt successfully to change. A particularly interesting area is the issue of addressing the psychosocial risk factors associated with the new forms of flexible forms of work online, which are nowadays taking on increasingly diverse forms, putting workers at increased risk. In this context, it is particularly important and questionable whether there is an appropriate balance between competitiveness and the enforcement of labour and social security law.
