The article attempts to show the dimension of teresian mysticism in which our encounter with the Mystery leads to the deepest understanding of the dignity of the human person. This profound experience is the reason why teresian mysticism is founded on the greatness of our humanity created, as it is, in the image and likeness of God, who dwells within each one of us. As a consequence our soul has an indestructible beauty which can be likened to a precious diamond. No anthropology has ever reached such a deep and positive understanding of the human person coming as it does from an experience of God.

This essay on the 450-year history of the Teresian Carmel focuses on the charismatic journey made by the most representative figures, from the time of the founders until our own day. We explore this charismatic experience under three headings: as spiritual journey, as communion with God, and as apostolic mission. This focus on the charismatic experience helps us to perceive more clearly the different phases in the history of Carmel. The common denominator, or the golden thread running through these various experiences, is the theme of searching, seeking, and it speakspowerfully at a theological, an anthropological and a charismatic level. This hermeneutical key draws its inspiration from Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis. The searching, seeking, results in a host of different paths which enrich the charismatic history of Carmel. The essay concludes by bringing out the cultural dimension of this experience – that “lifestyle and sisterly manner” – which finds its expression in the literary, poetic and humanistic tradition of the Teresian Carmel.

The article speaks about the significance which the coming of the Holy Spirit had for the early Church. The first part of the text, which focuses on the Pentecost narration (Acts 2:1–13), shows that in the theology of the Acts of the Apostles the phenomenon of the Pentecost marks the moment when the first disciples of the Risen Christ open to a language hitherto unknown to them, to a sign and the outer manifestation of a new heart. Thanks to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the community of the disciples became the Church. The gift of the Spirit gave them the creative ability to communicate despite human differences, dissolved the barriers between them and brought about their unity.

Touching Jesus’ garment by a woman suffering from a twelve-year discharge of blood rendered an uncontrolled flow of power (δύναμις) from his body and cured her. Did the fact that the woman’s touch concerned this specific part of the robe of the Master of Nazareth have some meaning? Bearing in mind the law of wearing tassels upon the hem of the garment (Deut 22:12) as well as the prophecy from Zach 8:23, we follow the history and the meaning of this appendage to the garment. It is certain that tassels upon robes were not an idea that originated in Jewish culture. We find evidence of garments with this kind of adornment on two Minoan seal stones from around the 17th c. BC, Assyrian bas-reliefs (9th c. BC) and also on some Egyptian artefacts (starting from around 15th c. BC). They are visible as additions to the robes of both important people (king, priest) and deities. In many cultures, tassels upon the robe gave a special status to the person who wore them. They served as seals and as such they constituted an alter ego of a person. Touching or grasping the fringes of someone’s robe gave the owner an aff ection and gave him that person’s power. It seems that the Jews, to the preexisting custom of wearing this ornament, added, following God’s command, a specifi cally Jewish order to put in the tassels a blue thread (Num 15:38). Wearing the fringes widened with a new dimension – they were supposed to remind people of God’s commandments and his presence. In the case of the sick woman touching Jesus and also in the passage of Matt 14:34–36, where the sick people ask whether they could touch “the fringes of his cloak” both dimensions (ethnic – power, and specifi cally Jewish – memory of God commandments) are significant.

Reading Lumen Gentium, the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church of the Second Vatican Council, we can note that the mystery of the Church is explained on the basis of biblical metaphors. Two of them play a special role: the Body of Christ and the People of God. How did it happen that the theologians of the Council had assigned this special role to these metaphors while defining the Church? Did the theological movements of the previous centuries, especially in Germany, play a leading role in this choice? The answer to the above-mentioned questions is the topic of the present study.
