After radical socio-political changes that occurred in 1918, irrespective of antagonism of the new regime towards the previous, Austro-Hungarian rule, numerous practices introduced and developed by Austro-Hungarians were taken over by the new rulers. The system of administrative practices and maintenance of administrative archives were inherited in their entirety. However, based on research of original archival material, this paper establishes that the office management was a far cry from the system that had existed prior to 1918. Furthermore, numerous administrative and territorial changes carried out after 1918 had a significant impact on the physiognomy of preserved archival holdings as well. The existing literature on archives blame solely to Austro-Hungarian authorities for this destruction of archival material in Bosnia and Herzegovina, pointing at the fact that they failed to establish a single archival institution for the country. In addition to the fact that even after 1918 there was no archival institution established in Bosnia and Herzegovina, this paper builds upon original documents in order to shed some light on the absence of responsibility of the new “liberation” regime towards administrative archives – also known as people’s memory – that, in the period after 1918, was not only unprotected, but also exposed to abuse and mercilessly destroyed by the regime.

In the early 1920s, the Polish exile in France had a population of over one hundred thousand. It consisted mainly of Poles from Galicia and Polish miners from Westphalia. They treated their stay in France as temporary, and therefore demanded that Polish priests provided pastoral care. Its installation was only possible in consultation with the French church authorities. In order to sign the relevant agreement, the Polish bishops invited French bishops to visit Poland in 1923. The visit took place in June 1924 under the leadership of Archbishop of Paris. The archives of the Diocese of Paris contain materials describing this event, which were submitted by Cardinal Dubois. By reading their contents, one can learn more about the reactions of the French party during and after the visit to the Second Polish Republic.

Барс. Син. Певч. ГИМ. Барс. 1345 и ГИМ. Син. Певч. 1109, permet d’élargir le cercle des manuscrits de l’École de chant de Putna et de «réunir» les deux parties autrefois séparées d’un seul et même recueil Син. Певч. 1109 et ms. PII.

Jusuf-bek Umaszew was most probably born in Dagestan and was most likely of Kumyk origin. In the interwar period he served as a contract officer in the 36th Infantry Regiment stationed in Warsaw. He was on active duty in the Polish Army until the last days of the defense in September 1939. After the campaign he left for Turkey. There he was recruited by Polish intelligence, which entrusted Umaszew with the task of building a courier route through the Caucasus to Polish lands occupied by the Soviet Union (Lviv and Białystok). This was achieved after the beginning of the German-Soviet war in June 1941. In 1943, the post where Umaszew worked was terminated, and he was transferred from Istanbul to Jerusalem. Around that time, the idea of using him in the activities of the “Promethean movement” emerged. However, no decisions were ultimately made in this regard. Nevertheless, following the end of World War II Umaszew became involved in the movement, though it is not possible to determine whether he did so in cooperation with the Poles or on his own initiative.

This article discusses several aspects of Gustaw Waliszewski’s letters to Julian Bartoszewicz from 1853–1855, which today are part of the Archive of the Bartoszewicz family maintained by the State Archives in Łódź. The letters, spanning 163 sheets, have been studied from several perspectives: (a) biographical, which offers insight into the personality of the young man only just starting his academic career, who dreamt of becoming the “national Thierry”; (b) genetic, which treats the letters as material documenting the creative process associated with historical studies and writing columns for the Dziennik Warszawski periodical, and which described the beginner scholar’s struggles with censorship limitations; and (c) that of press research – related to the broadly discussed in the letters topics of the development of the Dziennik Warszawski, its rivalry with the Gazeta Warszawska, and the fight for influence in the countryside. A series of memoir articles by Julian Bartoszewicz devoted to Waliszewski offer additional context; they complement the whole in the place of the lost set of Bartoszewicz’ responses to Waliszewski.

The article focuses on documenting and preservation elements of intangible cultural heritage materials of the local community using of folklore and ethnographic data from Vielieŭščyna village (Liepieĺ district, Vicebsk region) in Belarus. In The Collection of Folklore Records—the largest folklore archive of Belarus—different types of materials are stored including audio and video records, photos, manuscripts and musical note transcriptions which were made in the one location (village, town, etc.) at different times by professional folklorists and amateurs. Substantial parts of these materials covering all aspects of folklore were accumulated during field expeditions of folklorists from The Institute of Art, Ethnography and Folklore named after K. Krapiva of The National Academy of Science of Belarus since 1960s. Other parts were sent to the contest “Best Folklore Collector”, donated to The Collection of Folklore Records from personal and university archives. Materials were collected under different conditions (historical periods, collecting strategies, technical equipment, etc.). These folklore and ethnographic data allow for the characterizing of local traditions to see how they have changed over time.

While a new paradigm of scientific research based on data centres and research infrastructures is gaining ground in science, and convergence between infrastructures and scientific domains is growing in cyberspace, epistemic cultures, particularly conservative in some fields, play a significant role in the dynamics of knowledge production in general and the adoption of data-intensive scientific practices in particular. In the present study, we focus on the transformations of scholarly communication through the perspective of digital curation of research data in the humanities, which certainly belong to these conservative epistemic cultures. The aim of this paper is to explore perspectives on the evolution of data curation in the context of the transformation of scholarly communication and research infrastructure in the humanities, specifically static archives, into living, continuously enriched data archives supported by artificial intelligence tools. To explore this perspective, we have chosen to compare scholarly communication in the humanities and in high-energy physics, in addition to analysing the practices of data curation itself. We further thematize the identified differences in terms of virtual research environments that can help humanities scholars exploit the potential of data-intensive research infrastructures.
