Cultural and educational activity of the archive is a complex field of work that allows great creativity but it does not allow omissions. One of the most common aspects of cultural/educational activity of the archive and promotion of the archival materials to the public are archival exhibitions. The role and importance of archival exhibitions are manifold. With exhibitions the archives bring attention to their existence, to the importance of the archival materials and their preservation. Through exhibitions the archives cultivate the knowledge about the archive, but also the knowledge about the past. By educating a large number of population through exhibitions of the archival materials, the archives destroy stereotypes and historical myths, and both the individual and the society acquire a positive attitude towards history as of an amount of the rise and fall of one people, community and state. The exhibitions are mostly jubilees, celebrating important dates but they can also be promotional with the objective of presenting the work and history of certain institutions, events and persons. The promotional role of the exhibitions can, through a selection or favor of certain themes, support certain political of ideological attitude. Exhibitions of the archival materials are the image of time in which they originated, so though them political or ideological needs of one society can be perceived. More than six decades long tradition of the exhibitions of the archival materials in Serbia, testifies about the efforts put in, varied quality, various tendencies, but also about the constant tries to draw public attention and to secure good publicity to the archival activity. The archives today are dealing with greater challenges. The accessibility of information through a computer technology draws away visitors from coming to classical exhibition. That is why the archives in the world, and in Serbia, are using new possibilities of those new technologies. Through their web presentations, virtual exhibitions, PPT presentations and similar forms of communication promote their institutions, materials and themes which are processed through exhibitions. What is becoming not only a trend but a necessity of contemporary world is adapting of the archival activity to the liking and needs of the consumers, which means constant transforming of the archives from institutions of close type, unavailable to the public, to open institution, that are available and that offer their materials, education and information to contemporary man.

All archival regulation, just as those before the war in 1992 and those appeared later which are still used, imply keeping of files in archives. Those are mainly files of archival records and collections, about materials that are in the property of owners of registrary materials, and about usage of archival materials in archives. However, the disadvantage is that these obligations, determined by archival laws, are not made concrete in implemental regulations (except in the Archive of Serbian Republic) where particular patterns should have been regulated. Because of this, archives are working on the same way as before the war, but still there are slight innovations in some archives. Keeping of appropriate files, that should be identical on the whole area of the country, is the neccessity of archive and archival service in general. Thus a system in doing tasks is introduced. It is also easier to sum up complete state and achieved results in the branch, which is often a condition for making developmental projects of all types. Therefore, more attention should be paid to these tasks in the future.

In his book entitled What is media archaeology Jussi Parikka suggests that it is possible to outline and develop a ‘hardcore’ media archaeology not only of the hard drive and software but their official use as a database, as information management systems as well. But is it possible at all to give a media archaeological account of the formal-institutional digital media practices, to provide a deep and material media archaeology of, say, a scholarly text archive as TextGrid or Deutsches Textarchiv? In my paper I try to check the ability of Parikka’s argument to answer these questions.

The archive was an important addition of the editorial work in the Anglo-Saxon and German speaking countries. This department accumulated not only the own-produced content, but made media coverages as well, and offered thematic summaries to the journalists, and verified the accuracy of informations before publishing. But this profession is threaten by the danger of disappearing because of the growing and easily manageable databases and the cost saving trends in the media. The interview was made by Gedeon H. Gyula Zsugán with Herbert Staub, the last Mohican who fights for the surviving of the profession and for filling it with new content.

The monograph Nowe wyzwania archiwów. Komunikacja społeczna i public relations by Marlena Jabłońska published in 2016 may attract the interest of not only archivists, but also librarians. It constitutes a model to show social communication and public relations as the philosophy of management in the context of activities carried out by archives, which should improve the archives’ work and change their social reception. The solutions suggested here may be used in practice; they should be treated with flexibility and adjusted to a given archive, its resources and needs. This new outlook on the archives overlaps with the changes that have been taking place in the archives in the recent years. Technological revolution entails modifications in the archives’ work, using more and more modern management tools, which have already been successfully employed by other institutions, including libraries. The monograph was written with a vivid and emotional language, which is the evidence of the author’s involvement in the subject matter and the proposals she puts forward. The management issues, so difficult for archivists, have been presented in a clear and transparent manner. The monograph also includes a number of drawings and tables prepared by the author. They illustrate the issues addressed in the monograph and make it easier to understand the conclusions. The books was carefully prepared and published by Wydawnictwo Naukowe UMK [the Scientific Publishing House of Nicolaus Copernics University], which received a distinction in the competition organized by the Association of Higher Education Publishers in 2017.

Since the dawn of history, archival activities have been associated with the level of cultural and civilizational development of the societies concerned and their cultural characteristics. These were established along with the development of state institutions. For centuries they owed their existence to the types of media in which they were created, and favorable circumstances. By documenting the past, they became one of the most important components of the primary source base, underpinning professional historical research. However, they often, if not usually, attracted the attention of political agents interested in interpreting the past to suit their own ends. The duty of archives and archivists, however, is to strive to build an objective picture of the past, just as it is in day-to-day operations to manage the documentation produced on an ongoing basis in such a way that it reflects the totality of political, social, cultural problems and the activities of all authorities, political institutions and subjects of economic and social life. It is on this basis that the primary source base for future historical research is created. In this way, and this is the basic thesis of the article, archives and archivists become a link between the present and both the past and the future, whose research requirements and cultural needs they are obliged to satisfy in their record-keeping policies. For these activities to be fully possible, archivists as a professional group must demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and strive to meet the ethical requirements adopted by the international community.

The influence institutional mandates have on the activity and results of describing archives could be risky for the value of descriptive authenticity. Different understandings of archival terminology, descriptive processes, and context models certainly influence the concept of authenticity in regard to archival description within a collection holding institution. If one will ask for authenticity matters, a model of archival description will not be sufficient in order to give insights into the factors description and its results are influenced by. Therefore, the basis of this investigation shall be the draft of a conceptual model consisting of models regarding objects of description, subjects of describing, toolkit for describing and perception. As conference proceedings, this essay highlights certain points and parts. One question is the role of “Records in Contexts Conceptual Model” (RiC-CM) as a new standard which enables priorizations of relationships, and whether it can help to put standardization and authenticity efforts closer together.
