„1968” in Yugoslavia – Student revolt between East and West
1968” u Jugoslaviji – Studentski protesti između Istoka i Zapada
The student protests of June 1968 in Yugoslavia were a shock for the political elite. It concerned the first open mass protests after the consolidation of power by the communist party after the Second World War. The gap between the requirement of the federation of the communists to create a democratic and fair society and the disappointing social and political reality became clear. The student protests marked the end of the illusion of a harmonious „conflict-free society”. The student protests can be understood only in the context of the criticism at the reality of Yugoslav socialism, which was articulated already since beginning of the 60’s by intellectual ones from the surrounding the journal Praxis in addition, writers and film producers from the avant-garde art and culture scene. The characteristic „of the Yugoslav 1968” in the global connection exists in the integration of elements of the contemporary youth protests in east and west.
