The Herzegovina uprising (Serbian Cyrillic: Херцеговачки устанак) was an uprising led by ethnic Serbs against the Ottoman Empire, firstly and predominantly in Herzegovina (hence its name), from where it spread into Bosnia and Raška. It broke out in the summer of 1875, and lasted in some regions up to the beginning of 1878. It was followed by the Bulgarian Uprising of 1876, and coincided with Serbian-Turkish wars (1876-1878), all of those events being part of the Great Eastern Crisis (1875-1878). The uprising was precipitated by the harsh treatment under the beys and aghas of the Ottoman province (vilayet) of Bosnia — the reforms announced by the Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid I, involving new rights for Christian subjects, a new basis for army conscription, and an end to the much-hated system of tax-farming, were either resisted or ignored by the powerful Bosnian landowners. They frequently resorted to more repressive measures against their Christian subjects. The tax burden on Christian peasants constantly increased. (WIKIPEDIA)

The world order constitutes, it is true, the environment in which the Bosnian state, after it had been internationally recognized, was brought to its destruction, but this only where the aggressors achieved it, having been confronted to unexpected resistance from Bosnian forces from within. The analysis of this situation therefore also represents a definition and interpretation of its logic model on a global scale. The events in question bear witness to the intention to destroy Bosnia by all means, including the total annihilation of the Bosnian being, through extermination and genocide. Their consequences today can be summed up as follows: the Bosnians survived only where they defended themselves, and the state of Bosnia, for the sole reason that the aggressors failed to break down the relentless resistance and unexpected from those whose disappearance they had programmed. The effects of this destruction have brought to light the enigma posed by the character of the Bosnian struggle for survival. We would like to give to the whole of this resistance, both outside and inside, a content that would not be Bosnian, in order to reduce the idea of the protection of the Bosnian state to just one of its components, thus confirming the deformation and degradation of the Bosnian being himself. // PUBLISHED IN 2005 BY DURIEUX PUBLISHING HOUSE BASED IN ZAGREB

The events that struck Bosnia at the turn of the millennium - its people slaughtered and expelled, assaulted and humiliated, its towns and villages ravaged - did not concern only Bosnia. No individual, nation, region or state was protected from it, although their role took different forms. It is the whole human person who has suffered. It would be a never-ending task to list and describe these various experiences, and anyway, no matter how deep we go, their essence may well remain elusive. This is why this book attempts, on a more general level, to differentiate the modern world view from the traditional one, allowing a "Bosnian response" to take shape as they meet. // PUBLISHED IN 2005 BY DURIEUX PUBLISHING HOUSE BASED IN ZAGREB
