Despite the lack of deep interconnections between the Ukrainian Diaspora in Romania and the population in Ukraine, there are some positive signs of mutual interest. The Ukrainians in Romania are very anxious about the evolution of the conflict in Eastern Ukraine and would like to see it settled it as soon as possible. At the same time, it is important to ensure the impartiality of the media space regarding the events in Eastern Ukraine, for a proper assessment of the situation in the country. The conclusion of the Intergovernmental Agreement on local border traffic is very important for establishing interpersonal contacts between representatives of the Ukrainian Diaspora in Romania and the Ukrainian population. In addition, the creation of a consular post in Solotvino would enable more than two million citizens – both Romanian and Ukrainian – to cross the common border in a simplified form.

The national idea of «Greater Hungary» developed by Hungarian national authorities considers the spread of its influence in the regions densely populated by the Hungarian diaspora: South Slovakia, Transylvania (Romania), Vojvodina (Serbia) and the Transcarpathian region (Ukraine). This article examines the danger concealed by this project for Central and Eastern European countries. The attempts of its implementation in the policy and practice of contemporary Hungarian right-wing political parties are considered. Citizenship represents the totality of rights and freedoms which a State grants to its citizens, plus all their obligations to the state. In terms of its social role, citizenship is one of individual identities and involves developing certain skills or a civic culture which allows for a meaningful exercise of the status of citizen. The notion of European citizenship contributes a better understanding of the European Union’s composite nature, as the EU is a community of law, a socioeconomic system and, increasingly, a political entity. The article addresses from a theoretical perspective a series of Community rights which the EU citizen can access.

The academic literature on the issue of democracy in the European Union includes various calls for a bolder personalization of the electoral competition, in order to improve citizen participation. Frequently associated with the debates on the so-called “democratic deficit” of the EU, these approaches generally provide several other recommendations leading to a more majoritarian type of government for the European polity. The entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon, in December 2009, strengthened the European Parliament’s position in the EU political system and gave a new impetus to the pro-integration forces operating within it. While asserting its new role as the EU body enjoying the highest degree of direct democratic legitimacy, the European Parliament found itself in a favorable position to challenge an important prerogative of the EU’s primary inter-governmental body, the European Council: the decisive input in the process of nominating the European Commission president. The European political groups had surprisingly different reactions to the new institutional framework. The three political families that had so far dominated EU politics produced fairly conventional – though by no means similar – responses, while the smaller groups, with the exception of the far left, opted for less conventional ones.

The crisis of values in today’s omni-mercantilized world could be solved by changing the axiological reference specific to our times. The dynamics of the contemporary systems is attained through diversity and not through homogeneity, which is impossible for the two thousand existing peoples and the five thousand ethnicities, each with its specific or resembling traditions. That is why what is needed is education through and for cultural diversity. The philosophy of diversity in action pleads for openness, empathy and the communication of the values of each culture through programs focused on contents (intercultural curriculum) that are centered socially (on the leveling of chances of success) and on the student, who needs to be educated in the spirit of perceiving his/her own future situation. The idea that we intend to advance refers to the fact that the focus shift of the paideic act onto the spiritual potential of the human being may lead to the assuming of the axiological autonomy, which can undoubtedly constitute the vector of our spiritual freedom. We consider that the construction of an axiological conscience, defined by the need of doubling the human existence by culture and faith and objectified through a morally superior attitude and behavior, seems to be a primary objective of our times. Thus, in globalization, the moral values and not the economic or political ones must be primordial. Above the national interests and the cultural differences among the states, what is needed is a universal ethics which should contain a number of consensual values agreed upon by the whole humanity and by the community of states, respectively.
