Michal Dočekal directed Kafka's America at the Hungarian Theatre in Cluj. According to Tamás Lovassy Cseh's review, the stage interpretation of the novel results in a slowly owing, symbolically en- coded, strongly visual performance, which can be perceived rather as a hommage to the Kafka oeuvre - without touching upon the functioning of power-structures or the vulnerability of common people.

Kinga Boros translated Gianina Cărbunariu's monodrama, Metro is everywhere for the drama section of this issue. With a characteristically precise sense, the author does not describe the main protagonist in detail, and we only nd out from the online character list that "The woman" is in her thirties. Almost with the swiftness of a running metro train, the monologue creates "The woman" as an upper-middle-class white female, only to decompose these contours later - as we travel through the capital intersecting various social groups. The character with whom we can easily identify, with whom our desires urge us to identify because she seems to be a winner in this familiar capitalist world, will turn out to be an unemployed loser. Far from being merciful, Cărbunariu's text is a disillusioned, desperate social panorama, the strongest affirmation of which is the presentation of the female perspective on the general loneliness and lack of solidarity.

Gianina Cărbunariu’s play, which premiered with the author’s direction in May 2016 at the Radu Stanca National Theatre in Sibiu, appears in our issue in Éva Patkó’s translation. The two parts of the plot happening in different countries are connected by the same phenomenon: corruption. Or more precisely, by what happens when an employee discovers a case of corruption and reveals it to the public. The main characters of Cărbunariu’s drama are the so-called whistle-blowers who are usually common people. The drama deals with real-life events, made famous by the press as well, from the spheres of health-care, public administration and international business. The scripts of these cases are similar in different countries: the fight with employers, superiors and colleagues, with different entanglements of interest, with the general resistance of the environment are followed by long trial procedures which represent heavy emotional, physical and financial burden. Is it worthwhile to fight for the truth? – This is the question posed by Cărbunariu’s drama, which gives different answers through its different characters. In the meantime, it gives an accurate description of the contemporary context of this issue: the functional system of bureaucracy that permeates private and public institutions, personal and common property, as well as the public and private spheres.

Probably one of the most influential villains in literature, the Jew of Malta is usually invoked when critics deal with the most villainous characters of Renaissance drama. He haunts the villains that preceded or succeeded him. Introduced in a lengthy prologue spoken by a character named Machiavel, Barabas is usually associated with Machiavellism. However, the political formalism that dominates the critical understanding of the stage villains obscures the distinctive characteristics of Machiavels. The latters are either familiar with the world of politics, like Edmund and Richard III, or are able to familiarize themselves with it, like Iago. Unlike them, Barabas is born outside the realm of politics. The invasion of Malta by the Turks thrusts him in the role of the governor. After all the plots he uses to reach that post, Barabas finds himself in a rare moment of self-fashioning. In this article, I argue that the tragic fate of Barabas is brought about primarily by his failure to become a Machiavel in the strict sense of the term. Moving from the realm of the civil to the realm of the civic entails moving from pure evil trickery to Machiavellian machinations. Failing to refashion himself, Barabas falls victim to his own plot.

The present study addresses several delicate and disturbing issues of the editing and publishing of Shakespeare’s drama, based on the reconstruction of the plays from prompt books, as well as reliable or not quarto editions. While closer than ever to the desirability of a truly, most needed, critical edition, the versions of Shakespeare’s complete works differ significantly in also including or not several plays previously considered to have been apocryphal.

In the works of Clement of Alexandria pieces of Homeric verses surface from time to time as a testimony to a Christian truth or an interpretation of Scripture. Such instances in Gnostic writings presented evidence that these Gnostic writers treated Homer as their own prophet. It seems that in light of these accusations, Clement takes care to note that Homer did not understand the words he gave a voice to, any more than a raven does when he echoes what he hears. Furthermore, in all cases where Clement comes conspicuously close to implying a prophetic-like status for Homer, he does not fail to employ a phrase which explicitly divorces the poet from any theological authority.

This paper tries to present another side of the playwright I. L. Caragiale, revealed by his publishing work. Reading all his writing, the reader discovers that the author is the same when he presents his ideas, even if he creates a fictional writing or a publishing text. The author wants to criticize the manners of his society using the irony and sarcasm, a parody based on negative aspects which makes us laugh instead of crying. I. L. Caragiale uses the laugh as a real weapon against society and its vices. Because of its actuality, the work of I. L. Caragiale can be read even today and the reader may discover the objectivity, his special and unique sense of humor, a sensible soul who suffers because of the corruption and lack of good principles. This author must be read by the young generation in order to discover this subtle modality of facing the wrong aspects from society and fight against them through irony and sarcasm. It’s obvious that this method may be as cruel as the physical punishment, sometimes more painful and efficient.
