Dijalog franjevačkih ljetopisa sa suvremenom bosanskohercegovačkom i hrvatskom književnošću

With the aid of intertextuality and cultural-memory theory, this paperan alyses connections between the chronicles of eighteenth-century Bosnian Franciscans and current (20th and 21th centuries) Bosnian-Herzegovinan and Croatian literature (e.g. the artistic prose of Ivo Andrić, Miljenko Jergović ,Josip Mlakić, Ivan Lovrenović, Feđa Šehović, Dževad Karahasan). The paper shows that the Franciscans are particular ‘sites of memory’(Pierre Nora) within Bosnian and Croatian literature, that current literary production gives new meanings to the Franciscan literary tradition in a new framework, and lastly it suggests possible models for and draws conclusions about quoted dialogue.

"Koralina" Neila Gaimana w realizacjach teatru lalek w Polsce

Maria Janus focuses on theatrical adaptations of Neil Gaiman’s "Coraline" in Polish puppet theatre. The analysed performances were directed by Włodzimierz Fełenczak in Teatr Miniatura in Gdańsk with a stage design by Mikołaj Malesza (opening 2009) and in the Białostocki Teatr Lalek with a stage design by Joanna Braun (opening 2011) and directed by Karolina Maciejaszek in Teatr Pinokio in Łódź with a stage design by Anna Chadaj (opening 2013). In addition, the Author discusses the performance of Rozalinda, written and directed by Krystyna Jakóbczyk in the Teatr Dzieci Zagłębia in Będzin (opening 2012), which was inspired by Gaiman’s novel. Janus presents this performance in the context of copyrights and difficulties of obtaining licenses for use of texts written by popular authors (especially from the Anglo-Saxon region). The author compares the adaptations of Neil Gaiman’s novel written by Fełenczak, Maciejaszek and the translation of the novel’s narration by Jakóbczyk (theatrical situations and visual narration vs. the narration performed live on-stage). Maria Janus also highlights theatrical references from the novel considering meta-theatrical elements that enhance the performance. Janus compares theatrical media used in performances from Gdańsk, Białystok and Łódź with special consideration to the stage design and puppetry techniques. In the second part, the author focuses on the popularity of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline among theatrical directors despite little interest in horror fiction. Puppet theatres in Poland do not produce performances based on modern epic literature, especially those nbased on fantasy. Classical fairy-tales and modern dramaturgy containing fairy-tale motives are still more popular. Furthermore, Janus reflects on the possibility of a change of the herein discussed situation. She further refers to the arguments of Bruno Bettelheim, Stanisław Grzelecki and Katarzyna Slany considering young spectator benefits from the contact with theatrical representation of youth horror literature.

Subwersywny potencjał wypartego

In the chapter, Aleksandra Łozińska analyses the ways in which the authors of these novels refer to the issues of contemporary cities and the marginalization that occurs within them. The fantastic worlds created in these works are marked by much different constructs. These constructs include binary divisions of cities into official parts that converge with commercial images of the cities and areas hidden from the perspective of the former. These areas are built of redundant matter, inhabited by people marginalized in their own society and governed by practices that deviate from the confines of the official city narratives. This chapter expounds on the ways that these constructs allow for the re-evaluation of marginalized groups and elements (places, objects, fragments of history). Furthermore, methods of opposing exclusionary practices are included by penning subversive practices for the use of urban areas; and—in the case of Gaiman’s and Miéville’s works—by addressing the subject of economic stratification among the inhabitants of London (where metropolitan prosperity is dependent on citizens on the fringes of the social hierarchy). All three novels include characters whose lives are set outside of the mundane culture of consumerism (the life-source of all cities. Their social status becomes an exclusionary barrier to the circle of consumers around them. Thus the author approaches these threads as a type of project in flânerie (in contrast to the common understanding of his contemporaries) while maintaining its relevant critical potential. Against all odds and hardships, the situation of the protagonists is transformed into a positive, beneficial experience by bestowing upon them certain privileges, access to places and the ability to commit practices that are unattainable to the people living within the official sphere of the metropolis / social order. This aligns with the Bell-Hook margin theory therefore it will serve as the looking glass for the analysis of this subject matter.

Polska niezwyciężona

Magdalena Wąsowicz’s chapter provides an analysis of Polish novels that propose an alternate history to War War II. The author focuses on the way in which these novels change the course of history and reflect on current politics and culture. Three novels are analysed: "Wallenrod" by Marcin Wolski, "Powroty (Coming back)" by Adam Pietrasiewicz and Wojciech Bogaczyk, and "Burza. Ucieczka z Warszawy ‘40 (The Tempest. The Withdrawal from Warsaw ‘40)" by Maciej Parowski. The first two novels display similar sets of images relating to events in World War II and they both focus on the military aspects of the possible victory for Poland. In contrast, "Burza Ucieczka z Warszawy ‘40", demonstrates the power of the Polish spirit and the greatness of the culture of the Second Polish Republic. As a result, a utopian vision of Poland emerges—a vision which can now only be considered nostalgia. Maciej Parowski’s novel is thus a nostalgic retrospection of the perfect, lost world that can become a source of inspiration for future generations.

Umierająca, rozwiązła, szukająca miłości. Przygody Alicji w XXI wieku

Anna Goworek reflects in this chapter on the rewriting of Lewis Carroll’s novel "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland". Lewis Carroll’s novels—"Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland" as well as its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass—are both multidimensional works, considered to be the beginning of fantasy literature and classic children’s novels. They became an inspiration for many modern writers, theater and film directors and game creators. This work focuses on recounting the problem in Carroll’s dilogy in relation to literature (Andrzej Sapkowski’s "Złote popołudnie" and Patrick Senécal’s "Aliss") and television series (Nick Willing, "Alice"). I will discuss the contemporary problems of identity that Alice must confront. By creating the character of the young, stray girl, Lewis Carroll forces self-determination unto Alice. However, Alice from the twenty-first century is an adult woman, who tries to find herself in male-female relationship, tries to reconcile with her father’s departure and tries to deal with addiction. In addition, there is a modification in the creation of Wonderland and the land on the other side of the mirror. In modern remakes there are often scenes of narcotics, violence and with new technologies. Modern authors making genuine stories about a girl lost in Wonderland are usually only focusing on a few threads from novels of the English mathematician. They experiment with Alice’s character, often targeting adults with their books including the experienced reader or recipient who are familiar with Carroll’s dilogy and his biography. With every successive rework of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, there are many intertextual questions raised that are worth investigating by researchers. Perhaps this is a way for modern authors to ward off the stereotypical perception of Lewis Carroll’s novels as merely children’s literature. Despite the countless revisions of the story, contemporary interpretations of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass have adapted to the trends of the reader.

Dos poetas de posguerra (Wislawa Szymborska y Carlos Bousoño)

This study, the blending of postwar Polish writer W. W harmonii z naturą i kosmosem? O poezji Antonia Colinasa i Zbigniewa Herberta

There exists a deep spiritual union between poems by the Spanish author, Antonio Colinas (born 1946), and those written by Zbigniew Herbert (1924–1998), which is reflected by, among others, seeking harmony in nature and the universe. Although the poetic concept of the two authors often runs in various directions, a comparative analysis gives rise to a dia¬logue which reveals at some points surprising similarities and striking differences. When contemplating nature and arrangement of the universe both authors arrive at a conclusion that in fact the world is not an order, and what may be found in it, instead of the desired sense, is an emptiness which, however, for Colinas as opposed to Herbert, unveils the desired sense to the human being. What Herbert mostly sees is the union of suf¬fering between the human being and nature, whereas Colinas can notice a trace of some order in the omnipresent death.

The aim of the article is to compare three literary pictures of the political transformation presented in The impostor (2014) by Javier Cercas, Spis cudzołożnic (1993) by Jerzy Pilch and Sońka (2014) by Ignacy Karpowicz. These novels emphasize their discursive character, thereby revealing that the history is always a narration, not an uninfected series of events. The transformation is shown in conjunction with the theme of historical memory and imposture. The transition to the democracy revealed the new ways of falsifying history, in which the culture got involved on the basis of mass communication.

Roberto Bolaño y Witold Gombrowicz: dos rebeldes de las letras

The article starts with the striking observation that the writing of Alejandro Zambra, a distinctive contemporary Chilean writer of the middle generation, can be treated both as a string of intriguing experiments sounding various ways of (a personal going back to) writing, and as a convenient frame of reference to discuss the notion of the progress in literature. Accordingly, a comprehensive analysis of Zambra’s literary work intertwines with questions concerning the spectrum of literary innovations, the conditions of the possibility of producing new narrative dispositives, the limitations of formal inventiveness, and the regulative function of the cognitive value added.

In the monography “After the end of classics” Rakyovsky argues that Dostoevsky’s Double (“Dvoynik”) and Mandelstam’s Egyptian stamp (“Egipetskaya marka”) discard traditional narrative and put forward the paradigms of splintering, madness, terror. The article highlights the new anthropology in Dostoevsky’s works by the figures of machines, poets and insects (vermin, bug). As an alternative of the poet, Dostoevsky’s plots put in play the figures of (male) novel writing and (female) book editing and managing. All together with the tragic, the author elaborates the category of comic absurd in the margins of folly, nonsense and object.

The Rogue and the Hooligan: Two Cultural Patterns in Dialogue

The present paper aims at discussing the two cultural types, the rogue and the hooligan, not only as representative of a certain historical time, but also, and especially, as figures defining a specific typology in mainstream and popular literature. The so-called “loveable” rogue, a low-class character who impresses the reader through his selfless quest for an ideal in the seventeenth-, eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century picaresque novel is resurrected in the twentieth century in Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, Iris Murdoch’s Under the Net, among others, while becoming an “anti-rogue”, I argue, in Lucky Jim and Hurry on Down. Meanwhile, the hooligan (from the Irish “hooley” or “hoolihan”), an unruly, anti-social young man, born in the late nineteenth-century England, becomes both the destructive person in popular sports and the alter-ego for the wondering Jew in fictional texts, such as Mihail Sebastian’s How I Became a Hooligan and Norman Manea’s The Hooligan’s Return. The talk is intended to find ways in which dialogism functions with the various types of rogue and hooligan and to discuss the hooligan type as a possible replacement for the rogue in recent exilic literature.

Usmena književnost u povijestima hrvatske književnosti

Oral literature exists as long as humankind. Through history, that kind of literature was known as folk, anonymous, folklore, traditional, peasant (during the reign of Croatian Peasant Party). Oral literature is the tradition of written literature. In the past, oral literature was often given more attention than the written, and sometimes it was neglected. A great interest in folk literature emerged in the Renaissance period. Michel de Montaigne was enthusiastic about folk poetry and since his time term folk literature has been in use. The oral literature has reached its peak of popularity during the Romanticism. Approach to the oral literature in Croatian histories of literature is fourfold. Some literary historians barely mention it in their histories. Others speak of it peripherally when dealing with, for example, Petar Hektorović, Ivan Gundulić, Andrija Kačić Miošić, and many others. Some literary historians write about both oral (folk) and written literature in their histories of literature. The final approach is by those authors who have written histories of oral (folk) literature. Some literary historians have written histories of oral literature. Maja Bošković-Stulli in collaboration with Divna Zečević dedicated the first book of 1978 edition Povijest hrvatske književnosti: u sedam knjiga to the oral literature. In that history, the authors wrote about folk literature alongside the oral. In 1990 Tvrtko Čubelić published a monograph Povijest i historija usmene narodne književnosti. Marko Dragić published Poetika i povijest hrvatske usmene književnosti in 2008 and Stipe Botica published Povijest hrvatske usmene književnosti in 2013.
