In this interview a writer, Professor Dževad Karahasan, a member of The Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a member of The German Academy for Language and Literature, offers some answers concerning literature, arts, knowledge, cognition, blasphemy and the phenomenon of fear. He lectured at the universities of Sarajevo, Salzburg, Gottingen, Berlin. His books are translated to fifteen languages. He wrote novels: Eastern Divan, The ring of Shaharyar, Sara and Sarafina, The Night Council, collections of short stories: A house for the exhausted, A report from the Dark World, and collections of essays: About Language and Fear, Exodus from a City, The Book of Gardens. He is correspondent to many renowned European magazines like “Lettre International”, Berlin, “Les Temps Modernes” and “L Esprit”, Paris, “Micro Mega”, Rome, “Storm”, London. He was awarded a number of international awards, prizes and tributes.

Derviš Sušić, the Bosnian Spirit in Literature

The emancipation process in the field of story-writing literature has been much slower and more difficult, which is understandable, taking into account the fact that the basic idea of the national interpretation of Bosnian literature and its history had been the idea of the so-called “Bosnian story” that was proclaimed a model and flower for Serbian literature and that then set the tone for Bosnian literature, particularly in the period dominated by the Group of Sarajevan Writers. However, as slow as this process was, it was all the more thorough. There were two key landmarks that have determined the subsequent destiny of the genuine Bosnian story and novel in terms of spirit. These are Derviš Sušić and Meša Selimović.

DERVIŠ SUŠIĆ, BOSANSKI DUH U KNIJIŽEVNOSTI

Mnogo sporije i teže nego li poezija, a što je i razumljivo kad se uzme u obzir da je osnovna ideja nacionalne interpretacije bosanske literature i njene historije, bila ideja tzv. “bosanske pripovijetke”. Proces emancipacije tekao je u oblasti pripovjedačke književnosti. “Bosanska pripovijetka”, koja je bila proglašena uzorom i cvijetom srpske literature, davala je ton bosanskog literaturi, naročito u periodu dominacije Grupe sarajevskih književnika. Ali, ukoliko je ovaj proces tekao sporo, izgleda da je utoliko bio temeljitiji. Dva su, po mome mišljenju, ključna događaja koja određuju daljnju sudbinu istinske, po duhu, bosanske pripovijetke i romana. Ta dva događaja su Derviš Sušić i Meša Selimović.

Spies

Insurrection and resistance are bonfires constantly rekindled within the heroes of Sušić’s narratives, the heroes who view their profound and ingrained sense of Bosnian ethnicity as both a blessing and a curse. Bosnia has always been a country for whose territory clashed many a foreign army, at times even the banners set at dusk would not last long enough to witness the break of dawn; its borders, which trace the intersection of the East and West, have been constantly delineated at the focal points of military maps and conquest plans, so it was only natural for her every nook and cranny to be under the watchful eyes of paid spies.

Announcing the Translation of Spies

The novel, part of the canon of Bosnian literature, is a series of notes written by spies or about spies stretching across the long and complex history of Bosnia-Herzegovina. A spy tries to know the country he or she spies on.

MORALNORELIGIJSKI ODGOJ U KNJIŽEVNIM DJELIMA EDHEMA MULABDIĆA

The literary works of Edhem Mulabidc are indeed full of all sorts of educational morals, so much so that even the literary critics noticed this principle. Apart from his literary work, Edhem Mulabdic historically played the role of a national educator, humanist and a reformer. His was a time of great turbulence and historical divides. Mulabdic’s literature visibly bears the mark of that time. His first novels represent the “search” for the new prosaic forms in his mother tongue. They are educational and “safeguard the warmth of the harmonious”, “joyous imbuing of man, nature and the world”. Zeleno busenje (The green sods), a novel from the time of occupation, is the first Bosniac novel and it represents the monument to the Bosnian resistance and to the city of Maglaj. Like all other Mulabdic’s works, this one is not free from the didactical involvement either. Still, Nova vremena (The New Times), his second novel, represents the crowning in his educational tendencies.

SABIRANJE JEZIČKE TRADICIJE

Poetička složenost u bošnjačkoj i bosanskoj poeziji zadnje decenije XX stoljeća pokazuje svu dubioznost dosadašnje periodizacije bošnjačke i bosanske književnosti, gdje granične linije nisu bile poetičke nego političke, sa intencijom da se politička markacija nametne za poetičku. Ratovi su te linije koje je projektirala ideologizirana književna historija! Tako se bosanskohercegovačka književnost XX vijeka (i danas) dijahronijski razdjeljuje na: književnost do Prvog svjetskog rata, književnost između dva svjetska rata (tzv. međuratna književnost) i knjiženost nakon Drugog svjetskog rata. Nesumnjivo je da ratovi razgrađuju do tada uspostavljenu društveno-kulturnu mrežu i uspostavljaju novu, nesumnjivo je i da ti procesi utječu na poetičku sliku određenog književnog perioda, ali je, također, nesumnjivo da se naša bosanskohercegovačka književna historija prema svemu tome ponašala isuviše resko, bez nužnog nijansiranja, poglavito sinhronijskog ukomponiranja.

"PANISLAMIZAM" ŠEMSUDINA SARAJLIĆA

Semsudin Sarajlic does not represent a major development in the Bosniac literature. However, not even a diachrony of the religious Bosniac poetry of the 20th century should be without his religious songs. This is true mainly of his Mawlud, which has still not acquired its rightful place in the Bosniac Mawlud tradition.

MISTICIZAM MUSE ĆAZIMA ĆATIĆA

The most frequently used term in the present literary criticism of the poetry of Musa Ćazim Ćatić is most definitely mysticism. At the same time, Ćatić is one of the few Bosniac poets of the 201h century who based their entire poetry on Islam. It can surely be said, without exaggerating, that Musa Ćazim Ćatić (in addition to Džemaludin Latić) is the greatest Bosniac religious poet of the 201h century. The religious elements in his poetry were present from the very beginnings through his last (anthological) poem Death to the final verses of his poetry.

USLAVU PJESNIŠTVA O UZVIŠENOJ LJUBAVI

ISTOK U POEZIJI SAFVET-BEGA BAŠAGIĆA

POBOŽNA POEZIJA BOŠNJAČKIH PJESNIKA "IZVAN MATICE"

The literature created by Bosniac poets from Sandzak is a typical kind of literature created "outside of the original homeland". Sandzak, as a border area, is a typical enclave type area that produces a potential of the language idioms' syncretism: Serbian, Montenegrian and Bosnian. This language syncretism per se is enriched with the variable "excess sense". Hence, it is reserving the right to accurateness and importance of speech (colloquial and artistic). The aspiration of that merged kind of expression produced and it is still visibly producing the recognizable literary works. On the other hand, the language syncretism has, as its basis, the ethnological and anthropological syncretism. Here, the pagan elements intertwine with Islamic, Slavic with oriental, pre-Christian with Christian elements etc.

The forms of Islamic poetic tradition in the Bosniac poetry of the 20'" century have, as a rule, appeared as a result of the poetic exploration of an individual Bosniac poet, and, even then, very rarely and in few poems. Never have they appeared as a group within separate, rounded collections of poetry. Today, for example, we do not have a book by a Bosniac GAZAL, RUBAIAH OR TAREEH POET, not to mention a MAVLUD poet. However, we must point out to a book, although still in script, by Salih Alic, entitled KASIDE - QASEEDAH.

"BOSANSKI TEMELJ I ISLAMSKA DUHOVNOST" DŽEMALUDINA LATIĆA

Džemaludin Latiæ (1957.) u nevelikom svome pjesničkom opusu (zapravo tri knjige) najpunije je u novijoj bosanskoj poeziji (1945.-2000.) od svih naših pjesnika u umjetničko tkivo fundirao islamsku osjećajnost i doživljajnost svijeta. U njegovom pjesništvu ne mogu se više raspoznati svekolike (umjetničke i životne) dileme bošnjačkih pjesnika, nastale kao rezultat društvene, komunistièke, zbilje - Latić kao da se pojavio "potpuno netaknut" iz bogatog duhovnog humusa jedne tradicije, nezainteresiran za sve zablude i "raskršća" na njenom putu, uronjen u samu njenu srčiku.
