The article discusses if the retelling can be used for assessing tool on the exam for the 7th grade application. The choice of this genre over other student texts is not justified. By analyzing the examinations, it is concluded that the retelling does not give an objective picture of the knowledge as for its creation influence factors such as memory, concentration and attention which are outside the curriculum. The accuracy of some of the criteria on which it is assessed is questionable. The retelling requires a way of working with information that is totally different from the methods of the digital age.

Talks with Svetozar Igov mirror the innermost spiritual autobiography of a scientist, his experience in/with literature. But “Svetozar Igov case” is not only a personal biografema. In it – differently – looking and spiritual biography of a generation in Bulgarian literature. This is a sign, symptomatic episode, it must be meaningful as such. Fraying will shed light on many other “improbable” cases. Although every fate is unique in its own way ... But in his case be removed fate of many of this generation whose personal destinies will remain “listed” and will sink into the darkness as “implausible” ... In the second, interpretive part of Antonia Velkova Igovs personality is a mirror in “high waters” of humanitarian thought, social psychology, cultural anthropology.

DIGITAL CLASSICS AND ANCIENT HISTORY

The forth issue of Studia Universitatis Babeș-Bolyai Digitalia focuses on digital classics and ancient history. The initiative was rooted in the Digital Ancient History and Archaeology workshop hosted by the Babeș-Bolyai University in June 2018. Some of the papers published herewith were presented there, while others are later additions, which we believed best-fitted to the thematic of the volume in order to help us render a more thorough image of what studia digitalia in these fields mean today.

TREEBANKING LUCIAN IN ARETHUSA: EXPERIENCES, PROBLEMS AND CONSIDERATIONS

The article discusses some problems that arose while implementing two sets of annotation rules for treebanking Ancient Greek (the first set by Bamman and Crane, the second by Celano). Educational uses of treebanking are discussed, together with the most common problems that occurred while treebanking the Iudicium vocalium by 2nd-century writer Lucian of Samosata.

THE USE OF RELATIONAL DATABASES IN EPIGRAPHY: A CASE STUDY

The study of an abundant number of inscriptions leads to the conception of schemas and forms that can be organized into databases. This procedure allows us to arrange information with precision and to draw data and create connections between them in quickly and easily. For this reason, the relational database model has proved to be a valid support, as it makes possible to arrange data and information logically according to pre-established constraints and relationships, reducing errors and repetitions. The aim of this paper is to present an example of the use of a relational database created to catalogue inscriptions and highlight the positive aspects and difficulties found out during the process. The complexity of this method is mostly related to making choices about entities and identifying relationships between them; another obstacle is connected to the complexity of inscriptions as group of words and formulae. Nevertheless, the relational database allows the researcher to mix up data and information and create new relationships between them using SQL operators. The software used for the case study that will be presented in this paper is an open source administration and development platform pgAdmin (for PostgreSQL).

The gap between theory and practice has been recognized as a problem in the school education for a long time. Its gradual closure is possible exactly through the extracurricular activities. The picture of the not reading students in the “mass” Bulgarian schools is common and although it is a problematic topic, we have somehow accepted it as a norm and we have numbed our sensitivity towards the problem. And the argument is “We live in the age of technology.” What is more, we get annoyed every time when someone talks about the topic. The current paper aims to show how a student’s research on a few linguistic peculiarities of Tihonravov damascene was carried out, and what was the effect on the students in the high school through sharing of the results from the linguistic discoveries.

The article examines the part of Petko Todorov’s characters, that appears to remain away from the reception of literary criticism. These are all the famele characters, no mater their ethnicity or social status. This work propeses a semeotic analysis of all elements involved in the construction of the characters, looking for their common features and distinctive characteristics. As dominant in female imagery is displayed their exclusiveness – both in their appearance and their behavior. A conclusion is formulated, that Petko Todorov’s heroines aspire to love and freedom transgress taboos of the community and become a victim of their own modern selfhood.

The “Ugly proses” texts are devoted to uprising in 1919 in Germany. By his ecstatic expressionistc language Geo Milev paint a verbal picture of a burst, outdated moral reality, which is like a resurrection for those who are like already dead in this reality. This historical event is presented in the symbolism of the biblical context which enchances the feeling of predertermination of the event and its perception as an apocalypse. Namely that is typical in the spirit of expressionistic poetics.

The destruction of the utopian myth of an achievable new socialist order seems to have begun even before 1944, but this wreckage, which took more than four decades, is visible in Khristo Smirnenski’s poetry in just seven years. The road from “The Red Squadrons” to “The Tale of the Stairs” is lived in but a breath, and for it to be entered into the canons, almost half of it would have to be obliterated, forbidden, forgotten or misinterpreted. In the poems signed under Khristo Izmirliev’s other pseudonym – Wedball, we discover new horizons of his poetical capabilities. Thirteen of his poems, published posthumously, outlined the fi nishing touches of his image in literature. At the end of his lifetime, taken down by tuberculosis, he doesn’t fall into despair. All he does is to portray, in the most perceivable way, the dismantling of an illusion.

The edition contains various texts with eschatological visionary content. One of them is the “Trials of the Soul ” – a part from the “Vita of St. Basilthe New”. The main text of the “Vita of St. Basil the New” appeared during the Middle Ages. The text became popular again during the Renaissance, and especially the part of the soul`s trials of Blessed Theodora.This edition is translated from Church Slavonic language and was published by Naiden Ioanovich in 1843. The translation from the Church Slavonic was made by Joakim Kurchovski. This study aims to describe the edition in terms of content and specific features of the Bulgarian literary language.

Because of the ever wider introduction of translation courses at universities in recent decades, contemporary translation studies have begun to develop methodological guidelines for specialized training in poetry translation, an area that until recently remained on the fringes of research.This article presents a sample schedule for organizing classes in poetry translation that is consistent with both the specificity and difficulties of this genre of translation, and with the objective limitations of university courses in terms of time and resources. The proposals are practical and their purpose is to help teachers optimize the teaching and learning process in fulfilling their complex task of training future translators of poetry.

Хан Татар и Тодорка (Един прочит на варианта от Велико Търново)

The text interprets Khand Tatar and Todorka ballad by commenting the historical terms used from the one hand, and, from the other hand by doing a transformational analysis of the attributes and functions of the mediator in the plot. The situations connected with the Tartars as historical population are analyzed as potential sources of folk personages and motifs. Resultantly, the folklore situation is seen in the light of a possible reflection of the mythological understandings while at the same time the basic psycho-social functions of the ballad are outlined. Thus the reading combines historical and mythological aspects and compares the particular “Bulgarian” case with the universal models and structures of thinking.

FROM CLOSE TO DISTANT READING OF 100 ROMANIAN NOVELS FROM 1850 TO 1920

From Close to Distant Reading of 100 Romanian Novels from 1850 to 1920. In Romania, among the academic personalities, Solomon Marcus (b. the 1st of March 1925, Bacău – d. the 17th of March 2016, Bucharest) was perhaps the only one who happily combined linguistics and mathematics, being known in the Romanian philological environment especially for Lingvistica matematică [Mathematical Linguistic], Modele matematice în lingvistică [Mathematical Models in Linguistics], 1963, 1966, and Poetica matematică [Mathematical Poetics], in 1970, and in the international scientific field for numerous translation and also for numerous papers published in prestigious publishing houses in Paris, New York and Bologna. Grounded in the Distant reading paradigm (i.e. using digital humanities in analyzing large collection of literary texts) the paper, From close and to distant reading of Romanian novels from 1850 to 1920 provides a historical classification of texts in order to be included in a multilingual European Literary text Collection (ELTeC), permitting to test methods and compare results across national traditions and consider the consequences of such resources and methods for rethinking fundamental concepts in literary history. The paper is following main ideas in relation with the consequences of an absent research field in Romanian academic studies, digital humanities: Close and distant reading in digital humanities: Romanian literature case from 1850 to 1920; Romanian literary history and ways of transnational knowledge through Distant Reading of literary facts: 100 Romanian novels from 1850 to 1920; Transnational redefinition of periods in national history through a literary species: the novel; The problem of "translation / export" of national literary histories.

BEYOND THE HISTORY OF A LITERARY GENRE: THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ROMANAIN MEMORY WRITING

Beyond the History of a Literary Genre: The Encyclopedia of Romanian Memory Writing. The paper presents the theoretical frame of the research project The Encyclopedia of Romanian Memory Writing, currently being developed at the “A. Philippide” Institute for Romanian Philology. This encyclopedia joins other recent projects, such as literary dictionaries, in an effort to construct an alternative approach to the (national) literary history by subverting the (legitimizing) causal narration. It will include canonical texts, memoirists, various categories of title-articles, but also a set of operative concepts that allow for a definition of memoir-writing starting from the psychological, philosophical and anthropological implications of memory. By indexing literary phenomena in an encyclopedic manner, the textual corpora of Romanian literature may be described and analyzed in a transnational, comparative and interdisciplinary manner.

LIRE LE SOCIAL DANS LA DÉNÉGATION. SUR LES POSSIBILITÉS D’UNE SOCIOLECTURE DU LITTÉRAIRE

Looking for the Denegation. Possibilities of Reading the Social Reality in Literature. Despite a disciplinary history filled with embarrassing determinisms, the sociology of literature still tries to overcome al methodological obstacles, by proposing a mediate reading between the literary work and its socio-historical conditions. The present paper examines two recent examples of this mediate reading: Pierre Bourdieu’s homological model between the author’s position in the literary field and its literary production, respectively Jacques Rancière’s argument for an internal literary structure capable of self-explaining. Irreconcilably different, these two readings present nonetheless a common effort: both of them look for the categories of denegation – unintentional textual structures and silent style choices caused by the author’s habitus and by the social practices and constraints.

FOLKLORE ARCHIVES – WITNESSES OF THE HISTORY OF ETHNOLOGICAL STUDIES

Folklore archives – witnesses of the history of ethnological studies. This study proposes a rereading of the documents kept in a folklore archive from Romania, with a focus on the methods used by those who drafted and archived these documents. The research demonstrates that, in the absence of testimonies regarding the manner in which fieldwork was conducted, the documents of the archive can provide valuable information on the field research and the vision on folklore of several generations of researchers. Thus, archives of folklore are seen as witnesses of the history of ethnology.
