This article focuses on the distinction between Women’s Studies as an academic entity and feminism as a social movement. The author of the article questions the assumption that the political future of Women’s Studies as a field can be guaranteed by repairing the distinction between academic institutionalization and feminism as a world changing social force. The author worries more about the implications for Women’s Studies of refusing altogether the distinction between the academy and activism than about the difficulty of repairing the distinction between them.

On the occasion of the second edition of La donna contro se stessa (Women against Themselves), Carla Ravaioli reread her book and commented on pre-feminist Italy and the circumstances and facts, which influenced the women’s struggles there and gave rise to the powerful wave of feminism in the late 1970s. The female author concluded that although society still continued to be dominated by the sign of the “male”, women were establishing themselves ever more steadily as a reforming power with its own voice in history.

Paper analyzes gastronomic motives in poems of Polish Nobel laureate Wislawa Szymborska as an “universal operator of discourse” (R. Barthes). Its aim is to reveal anthropological reflections in texts, individual and universal story of seeking the world’s sense, connections between nature and human culture. The study concentrate on three main aspects of culinary motives: biological (satisfying man’s basic needs), social (interpersonal relations) and cultural (symbols in history, literature, methaphysics and ethic).

Maria Graciete Besse is a Portuguese-born poetry and novel writer and university professor presently living in France. She has published many literary essays in both France and Portugal and edited various books of conference articles on Portuguese-speaking literature. Her essay “New Portuguese Letters and the challenge to the patriarchal power” presents and discusses the main topics in the so-called programme book of the Portuguese Feminism. Besse considers the book of “the three Marias” still interesting at the end of the 20th century and analyses it in the view of constantly shocking time – present and past, space – interior and exterior and universes – real and imaginary. The object in focus of the analysis is “the situation of the woman” in the Portuguese society since the 1950s. In her analysis Besse seeks to stress the moments that make of New Portuguese Letters a political text challenging the patriarchal power.

The introductory text of the magazine is a kind of personal view, so the section is titled In the First Person. This time it is written by the young Sarajevan poet Senadin Musabegović. The text, entitled Writing about War, is a story written in a confessional manner about an encounter with the Norwegian author Bjorn Larson, who complains about the lack of conflicts in everyday life which could provide the basis for a good story (the theme of his novel is war in Algeria). In reply, Musabegović refers to Bergman’s characters, who speak dramatically about inner war. Bergman did not need war to make a story. His characters are not placed into the context of real war, with shells exploding, but they nevertheless talk about war. When I write about war, says Musabegović, which really and most brutally happened to me, I am attempting to address it from the perspective of the inner war that happened inside me. Even when we address war in the language of sheer facts, describing it coldly and in an almost documentary manner, it is still only the account of our inner experience of the world, states Musabegović.

The guest of this issue’s Diary section is Nedžad Ibrišimović, one of the most significant BiH authors of the middle generation. At the same time, he is also a painter and sculptor. Ibrišimović starts his Diary with diary notes of 1972, and then goes on with observations from the perspective of present time, finally continuing his diary with a story of the making of his sculpture Winged Horse, thus creating a documentary of exquisite power.

Logos Maje Skovran

Each issue of the magazine introduces one painter of the region. This time, it is a young artist from Belgrade, Maja Skovran, whose art is analysed by art historian and essay writer, Slobodan Lazarević. He says: ... We can say that each being is the light; where light is absent, darkness and futility reign. The whole being, the entirety of reality is in God; whatever extends beyond God, exists as nonbeing, “the darkness of Hades”. Creating her symbols and paintings, Maja Skovran has realised a bit of that promising divine reality, as the art shapes life by means of its unique language and mode, always in new and unique ways. It implies an everlasting search for the Logos - the primordial mythical impulse, out of which essence the world was made and certain order brought into it.
