This study deals with the linguistics and poetics of the translation of “The Twelve” by Alexander Blok, a leading poet of the Russian “Silver age” concerning three levels of analysis :a) lexical-grammatical challenges of translating,b) challenges of translating poetical pictures (and poetics of headlinesin the original and the translation), c) phonical-rhytmical challenges oftranslating.Taking into account the fact that the headline “Двенадцать“ in the Russian original has three levels of meaning, thematical “twelve people “, genre-compositional“twelve poems” and cultural-historical “twelve hours of the oldworld,” the only lexeme adequate to Serbian translation is the lexeme“дванаест” in a headline and it has to be used as a leit-motiv in three lines of the three poems of the epic.A special aspect of the study is represented by the explanation of the new recension of the Serbian translation of the poem “The Twelve”, with a grapheme “yat” (ѣ), that can be read in ekavian and yekavian dialects (with a monosyllabic reflex of a long yat pointing to the preceding apostrophy).

THE THEOLOGY OF CARL SCHMITT

The paper addresses the theology of Carl Schmitt. Schmitt often stresses his ‘natural born Catholicism.’ At the same time he also claims repeatedly not to be a theologian in the professional sense. On the other hand, his main ideas like the concept of the political (Der Begriff des Politischen), the public character of the church (Römischer Katholizimus und politische Form), and finally, his Politische Theologie II in reaction to Erik Peterson’s refutation of Politische Theologie I show that Schmitt’s ideas imply deep and problematic theological positions. The role of the katechon, or the Grand Inquisitor and his criticism of Peterson’s patristic arguments, especially the rejection of the anti-Arian reasoning of Gregory Nazianzen show a markedly unorthodox theological stance reminiscent of Charles Maurras’ political Catholicism. Schmitt’s transcends patristic orthodoxy in order to apply his historically conditioned 19th-century theology to sacralizing his idea of the political.

ОСОБЕННОСТИ ПРОЯВЛЕНИЯ ИМПЕРАТИВНОСТИ В ТЕКСТЕ «УСТАВА МОРСКОГО» 1720 ГОДА

The article examines linguistic means for expressing imperativeness in regulatory documents using the material of a text that was new for the Peter the Great’s era. The author identifies the peculiarities of the imperative situation in which the Naval Charter was applied, and determines its addresser and addressees taking into account Russia’s eighteenth-century historical reality. The addressees of the text were all maritime personnel, while the addresser cannot be clearly identified, since this role was played by both the Russian state built on the European model and the absolute monarch Peter the Great. Therefore, special pragmatic goals of the document are revealed as follows: regulating the actions of the addressees and training them according to the regulations provided in the Charter. The range of linguistic units that convey prescriptions and prohibitions in the studied text includes multi-style units. Imperativeness is expressed through infinitive forms, the future tense form with an auxiliary verb to have, conjugated verb forms, phrases with the particle da, and impersonal verbs with performative meaning. The use of linguistic means is associated with the subject of the prescription, the degree of specificity of the actions described, the extent of prohibition, and the severity of the offense for which the punishment was imposed. The form of expressing imperativeness could mark the socially weakened position of the addressee. All these facts suggest that the authors of the document searched for such linguistic forms of expressing imperativeness that would be understandable to the addressee and would correspond to new communicative and pragmatic tasks.

ОДБРАНА ПОЕЗИЈЕ: РУСКИ ФОРМАЛИЗАМ И НОВА КРИТИКА

The paper aims to present the key concepts that two formalist schools of thought developed in order to defend poetry as a miracle of communication. Russian Formalism takes Shklovsky’s defamiliarization (остранение) as its key concept and the trans-sense language (zaum) of Russian Futurist poets as a basis for analysing what constitutes differentia specifica of poetry. The ideas of the Russian formalist school, through Roman Jakobson, spread first to Eastern Europe, and then to the United States of America, where they influenced a group of critics, who were already inspired by T.S. Eliot’s and I. A. Richards’ ideas on poetic language and communication, to develop a new critical methodology. The name “New Criticism” was supposed to indicate that this school of thought was about different approaches and new tendencies in criticism. As the paper demonstrates, the key representatives of New Criticism are particularly interested in exploring the function of poetry and of criticism as well as the nature of poetic imagination and language. In order to examine what the poem says as a poem, they developed the practice of close reading and focused on metaphor, paradox, and specific method by which a poet transforms his experience into a poem as autonomous features of poetic expression. The special terminology introduced by Russian Formalism and New Criticism, and the complex, ironic and intellectual language they used not only managed to throw light on what specific problems of the science of literature were, but also enabled a defence through poetry – a kind of resuscitation and refinement of non-literary reality.

Perwersyjny wymiar świętości, czyli o jurodiwych i nie tylko...

In the article, the phenomenon of yurodstvo has been recalled, which is a characteristic and perhaps the brightest realization of the Eastern Christian ideal of sanctity as a clear projection of its irrational or even specifically perverse potential. The examples which are quoted in the considerations and selected from a rich literary corpus (Old Russian, Old Bulgarian and Old Serbian), are colourful manifestations of sanctity in Eastern Christian terms, which can be defined only in a specific religious or socio-cultural context. For that reason, it was considered that this specially designed sanctity should be interpreted in the key of negative theology which is typical of the Eastern (Orthodox) Christianity. Also known as apophatic, this theology assumes the impossibility of a positive knowledge of God, which entails a specific helplessness of reason towards the phenomenon that exceeds all applicable established standards. In the discussed case, the reflection intentionally goes beyond the limits of exemplification of the sainted yurodstvo, since it also covers other types of sanctity, recognized and perpetuated in the Eastern Christian (including Church Slavonic) tradition, and shows the proximity of all projections of the so-called parenetic sanctity along with the relationship between the yurodstvo itself and eremitism and Monasticism. In this wide exemplification range, it seems justified that the incarnated sanctity of the yurodivy, a hermit or a monk, revealing itself in the socio-cultural reality in an unusual, incomprehensible or even perverse way, is an emanation of the numinous mystery which escapes the rational orders. This emanation should be, therefore, regarded as a phenomenon going beyond the boundaries of intellectual cognition, socio-cultural sphere, or a fixed standard.

Mihai Eminescu şi independenţa

Le grand poète M. Eminescu, patriote enthousiaste dans ses oeuvres littéraires et dans ses ouvrages politiques, aborde les problèmes liés à l'histoire de sa patrie, exposant ainsi la complexité du fait national de l'indépendance. Intensément préoccupé par le destin de son cher peuple il se penche avec pieté sur les annales de l'histoire et avec une intuition digne à être relevée, il sait faire ressortir dans le contexte des processus historiques, les problèmes fondamentaux de l'existence de notre peuple : la continuité, l'unité et l'Indépendance. Pénétrant l'essence des phénomènes, le poète philosophe synthétise d'une manière merveilleuse le processus pour l'indépendance : „l'indépendance c'est le pivot de notre histoire"... Il vient stimuler le patriotisme en glorifiant la vaillance du peuple au long de son histoire. Le poète met en évidence le rôle de quelques voievodes luttant pour défendre la liberté du pays, en soulignant l'importance des pays roumains qui, au Moyen Age ont été le bouclier des pays chrétiens. Relevant les contradictions des intérêts des empires avoisinnants, le poète estime la juste orientation politique des voievodes roumains qui, par les traités conclus avec l'Empire Ottoman, ont évité aux grands empires chrétiens une soumission rêélle forcément préférant une soumission formelle à l'Empire Ottoman. Le grand poète citoyen, essalt de prouver la continuité de notre peuple sur le territoire de ses ancêtres mettant sur le premier plan la lutte pour la liberté. En soutenant l'idée de l'unité nationale il fait l'éloge de Alexandru I. Cuza, qui a préparé la guerre de l'indépendance de 1877, il a protesté contre les pertes des territoires Imposées à notre pays en prouvant, avec des arguments historiques, que la lutte pour l'Indépendance n'a jamais cessé.

The article focuses on the issue of Poland as a specific artistic space in queer poetry in Russia of the 90s and 2000s. Drawing on the creative work of Alexandr Anashevich, Yaroslav Mogutin, Alexandr Ilyanen and Ilya Danishevskiy, it reveals the connection between traditional narratives present in the Soviet official and unofficial, underground literature and new perceptions of gender. While partly sharing in “gender anxiety,” Poland is, nevertheless, considered a commonplace setting in queer poetry practices and performances on account of its unreliable, limitrophe, “threshold” nature for Russian-speaking recipients.

Is the Future Soviet? USSR-2061 and the Reality of Utopia

USSR-2061 is a Russian futuristic online project that imagines a new USSR a century after Gagarin’s journey into space. This article connects the project to Soviet space utopianism and the nostalgia that followed it, while seeing USSR-2061 and its artefacts in the light of utopian studies. In particular, the project’s hesitation with regard to utopianism and its thirst for realism are situated within a classical utopian problem of how to achieve real, not only imaginary, transformations. Such realism generally coincides with Levitas’ (2013) framework of utopia as a method, and, as the analysis shows, it hinders the construction of “an image of a future” at which the project aims. Instead, the resulting narratives and visions commonly overlap with the official Russian political discourse that makes use of Soviet nostalgia, or fall into retrofuturistic replications of commonly satirized Soviet discourses. However, a different way of constructing utopia is also present in USSR-2061, even if it is never highlighted. To make utopia possible in anti-utopian times, one might need to rethink its place of possibility or topos. Theoretically, such an alternative is presented in connection to Latour’s (2017) Terrestrial, a place with agency that in utopian terms presupposes a transgression of the boundary between the real and imaginary, the political and cultural. In the same line, the paper argues that USSR-2061 might attempt the construction of a new utopia through rethinking space. This might be fostered through the inclusion of cosmist ideas such as those of Vladimir Vernadsky and Alexander Chizhevsky, whose intersections with Latourian framework have previously been observed.

The article uses new archival materials, supplemented by a critical analysis of existing printed sources, to analyze Dostoevsky’s 12-day stay in the Tobolsk transit prison on January 9–20, 1850. The authors focus on the meeting of the Decembrists’ wives (N. D. Fonvizina, P. E. Annenkova, etc.) with the Petrashevites in the apartment of the caretaker of the Tobolsk prison castle. According to archival sources, a number of documents that state the name of the prison warden (Ivan Gavrilovich Korepanov) have been published, and his biographical information is provided according to the form list, supplemented by the testimonies of memoirists. In the light of the new data, a number of important clarifications were made to the narrative of the meeting in the apartment of I. G. Korepanov. V. N. Zakharov observed that there is no mention of the transfer of the Gospels to the Petrashevites in the detailed description of this scene, presented in the letter by N. D. Fonvizina. The authors further develop this observation, providing biographical information about the gendarme captain Alexander Smalkov (Smolkov), who performed this mission on behalf of N. D. Fonvizina, by handing Dostoevsky and his comrades copies of the New Testament, and showing how to extract the money glued inside it from the binding and how to hide it again. They cite observations that confirm the assumption that Smalkov assisted N. D. Fonvizina and M. D. Frantseva to negotiate with gendarmes Korolenko and Nasonov. The latter two accompanied Dostoevsky and Durov to Omsk, and arranged for them to meet with the Petrashevites on the winter road, 8 versts from Tobolsk, and to send a letter to I. V. ZhdanPushkin asking for help for the exiles upon their arrival in the Omsk prison.

Dostoevsky’s first trip abroad in the summer of 1862 took place in the midst of an aggravated political situation in Russia, facilitated by radical revolutionary unrest in St. Petersburg, Moscow and other cities, fires that followed the proclamations and raised suspicions of arson. To combat radical propaganda, an Investigative Commission for the dissemination of revolutionary appeals was established under the chairmanship of Prince A. F. Golitsyn. F. M. Dostoevsky, who had met with Herzen in London in July 1862, came to its attention. The article examines materials from the investigation file of the III Department “On the writer Fyodor Dostoevsky,” which have not been previously published and which allow to clarify both the facts of the writer’s biography, and the significance of this historical and literary event. The register of books and papers seized from Dostoevsky at the border is of particular interest. An analysis allows to understand what concerned the writer, what he read and deliberated. The first issue of the magazine Russische Revue, published in May 1862, is of particular importance. Its editor V. Wolfson witnessed Dostoevsky’s literary success in 1845. He witnessed Dostoevsky’s triumph at the salon of Prince Odoevsky, and was an admirer and translator of his works. The article establishes new facts of German-Russian literary contacts in 1840–1860 and Dostoevsky’s biography.

Перспективы цифрового Достоевского

There were several epochs in history that have altered the life of mankind. The first epoch was when the oral text was written down. The second was when the German scribe Guttenberg invented the printing press, and the handwritten text became printed. Now text is becoming digital, and there is a natural digitalization of all spheres of human activity, including the legacy of Dostoevsky. Modern information technologies create a new type of text that not only preserves the advantages of oral, handwritten and printed text, but also acquires new capabilities. The digital text expands the range of sources, the volume of information, and stimulates new methods of studying the writer's creative work. Despite the fact that electronic libraries, which currently dominate the Internet, present digital copies of Dostoevsky's printed publications, new types of electronic publications and new tools for analyzing not only handwritten and printed, but also digital text, are emerging. The idea of Digital Dostoevsky is being implemented in Petrozavodsk University projects (since 1995), the Institute of Russian Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences (since 2016), and the University of Toronto (since 2019). Lexicographic work on Dostoevsky's vocabulary is being carried out in digital format at the Russian Language Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The article provides an overview and outlines the prospects for the development of Digital Dostoevsky. An important task of the global Digital Dostoevsky is the creation of national bibliographies and electronic libraries and publication of new sources related to the writer's life and work. It is necessary to create the conditions for optimizing and integrating the existing resources. The digital format allows to actively use new text analysis tools and information technology capabilities for research and educational purposes.

Новые методы изучения творческого наследия Ф. М. Достоевского: на материале цифрового архива писателя

The work is devoted to the substantiation of new research methods used to examine the writer’s creative heritage and the concept of Dostoevsky’s digital archive. The first part of the article provides examples of the use of online information technologies to create electronic archives of literary and historical texts from different eras, highlight the distinct and common features of the created archival collections, and analyze the principles of material presentation. The material for this part of the research was obtained from the most respectable foreign and Russian Internet portals, which display historical and literary collections and funds associated with various cultural traditions and personas. Each such electronic collection was created on the basis of extensive, sometimes decades-long, scientific work aimed at collecting handwritten and printed sources, restoring handwritten materials, their textual research, studying their creative and non-creative history, determining the methodology of working with them and the concept of their textual and digital reproduction, as well as extensive preparatory work on the selection of technical equipment and digitization of texts. In most cases, such digital archives are not only a place to store sources; they continue to serve research purposes and contain the results and examples of scientific research. In the second part of the article, the tasks of the Dostoevsky digital archive as a collection of texts and a scientific laboratory for the study of the writer’s handwritten and printed heritage are formulated. The article substantiates the first stage of research work on the creation of a catalog of Dostoevsky’s verbal and non-verbal graphics, based on the combination of modern software methods and textual analysis.

В защиту Александра Ивановича Исаева (по документам Государственного архива Томской области)

The article introduces into scientific circulation official documents dated 1853–1855, preserved in the State Archive of the Tomsk region and recreating the last months of the life of Alexander Ivanovich Isaev — a friend of F. M. Dostoevsky in Semipalatinsk, the first husband of Maria Dmitrievna Constant (Isaeva, Dostoevskaya). These documents include: A. I. Isaev’s certificate of service, issued on September 27, 1853, and 6 reports and 12 official letters dated February–November 1855. Until recently, the corpus of biographical literature about Dostoevsky offered an image of A. I. Isaev as a bitter drunkard, a weak-willed man who ruined his career and life and left his family in poverty. Materials of the State Archive of the Tomsk region contain positive characteristics of Isaev and confirm his professional achievements and career growth from 1840 to July 28, 1853, the day of his dismissal. These archival materials reveal an important fact — the official reason for his dismissal from service. It was not Isaev’s alcoholism, exaggerated in the works of Dostoevsky’s biographers, but a deadly disease, namely, consumption (tuberculosis). This fact explains the words of Dostoevsky in a letter to Baron A. E. Wrangel dated August 14, 1855. About Isaev’s “dark fate,” the writer’s unwavering respect and goodwill towards him, as well as the desire to raise his son Pavel like his own father. Archival materials demonstrate that before and after the death of Isaev on August 4 (16), 1855, many persons who were influenced by the events of the last months of his life served as a tavern assessor in the Kuznetsk Zemsky Court.

Атрибуция в зеркале статистики: анонимные статьи в журналах братьев Достоевских «Время» и «Эпоха»

The attribution of content of Vremya (Time) and Epokha (Epoch) journals, in which many anonymous and pseudonymous articles have been published, presents many challenges for the researchers. In the XIX–XX centuries, a corpus of texts, which were unambiguously attributed to F. M. Dostoevsky, M. M. Dostoevsky, A. A. Grigoriev, N. N. Strakhov and other Vremya and Epokha authors, was formed on the basis of traditional documentary (letters, payroll, income and expense book, memoirs), ideological and thematic and stylistic evidence. The following types of texts were isolated within the corpus of anonymous and pseudonymous articles: author’s and collective articles, editorial inserts, notes; by type of writing — authorship, co-authorship, editing and adaptation of others texts. Modern methods of statistical analysis of formal grammatical and syntactic parameters in the text can provide sufficient grounds for expanding the source attribution base. This article presents the results of a study of a number of anonymous articles in the Dostoevsky brothers’ journals using three statistical methods of attribution: linguistic and statistical analysis according to the G. Kjetsaa’s method, the Transformer neural network and the Random forest algorithm. These results need to be correlated; they should be taken into account as complementary to traditional attribution methods.

Перспективы, возможности и трудности созданiя цифрового Достоевскаго въ традицiонной русской орѳографiи

The article considers the need to republish the texts of classical Russian literature in general, as well as the creative heritage of F. M. Dostoevsky in particular, in the author’s orthography. The author analyzes the key cultural and technological obstacles on the path to drawing the attention of the public and the scientific community to the problem of insufficient number of books published in traditional orthography. A set of practices and solutions that contribute to changing the current situation in the long and short term is proposed. Based on historical experience, as well as the work of modern researchers in the field of textual studies, the sociocultural functioning of traditional spelling in Russia at the present time is highlighted. This is the language in which the Russian classics were created. Rehabilitation and functioning of traditional spelling involves the capacity to write and publish your texts in scientific and business communication. It is necessary to encourage the use of traditional orthography in professional literary-critical and linguistic activities. Technical issues need to be addressed, in particular, the introduction of a new standard for the Russian keyboard layout, the development of information and reference services on the history of the Russian language, tools and technologies for creating electronic texts. Creating the digital Dostoevsky can help solve the problems of the variable use of traditional Russian writing.

Дополнения к комментарию (на материале записных книжек и тетрадей Ф. М. Достоевского 1860-х гг.)

The article analyzes certain proper names and titles of the works from the 1860s notebooks of F. M. Dostoevsky (preserved in the Manuscripts Department of the Russian State Library, fund 93.I.2.8 and in the Russian State Archive of Literature and Arts, fund 212.1.4, 212.1.5). Some of the notes have not been deciphered or have a controversial reading in research literature. These include both the names of people with whom Dostoevsky personally communicated, the names of the authors of books that the writer read, and the anthroponyms of literary heroes. Proceeding from the commentaries that accompany the first publications of notebooks in vol. 83 of the “Literary Heritage” series, as well as in vols. 20 and 27 of “The Complete Works” of the writer in 30 volumes, the author of the article offers an updated and/or corrected commentary on certain names and titles. Thus, the correct title of the book by the historian I. D. Belyaev, which was a part of Dostoevsky’s library, and about which a memo was made, is established. Dostoevsky often left critical notes in his notebooks regarding the works of a particular contemporary. The article examines a number of entries about “nihilistic novels” instigated by the reading of the then-current works on female emancipation. The commentary by T. I. Ornatskaya, who ascribes the name “Lilinka” and the records associated with it to “Dream,” a short story by A. V. Korvin-Krukovskaya, is disputed, confirming the opinion of other researchers that the source of the records is N. D. Akhsharumov's novel “A Tricky Business.” The article also analyzes records concerning the writer's debts (for example, to V. P. Polyakov, P. A. Popov and V. P. Popov), as well as notes about the failed and unknown authors of the “Epoch” (a certain Andreev). In Dostoevsky's notebooks of the “Time” (“Vremya”) and “Epoch” (“Epokha”) period (1860–1865) there are proper names that still have no corresponding comments. The article aims to draw the attention of researchers to existing problems for further development of the topic.

М. И. Семевский и Ф. М. Достоевский

The article presents the history of business and friendly relations between F. M. Dostoevsky and M. I. Semevsky, an employee of the “Vremya” journal and the editor of “Russkaya Starina”, the largest historical journal of the 19th century. Semevsky most likely met Dostoevsky in the early 1860s, when the former became a contributing author of the “Vremya” journal and wrote two large-scale historical essays for the publication: “Tsarina Praskovya” and “The Mons Family.” Dostoevsky was familiar with Semevsky’s works even prior to their personal meetings and intended to polemize with his concept of Peter’s time, as evidenced by the surviving sketches of the writer’s critical review. The idea of a polemic was rejected when Semevsky became the author of the “Vremya” journal. Its editors, the Dostoevsky brothers, appreciated his cooperation and, as confirmed in the fee book, paid him more than many other authors. The meetings of Dostoevsky and Semevsky were reflected in the epistolary legacy and in the notes of Semevsky, which he wrote in the autumn of 1866 after the trial of the revolutionary Nikolai Ishutin. In November 1876, Semevsky gave Dostoevsky the documents for “A Writer’s Diary”, requesting him not to identify the source. The communication between Dostoevsky and Semevsky in the last year of the writer’s life is mentioned in the memoirs of E. N. Opochinin. The article provides an overview of Dostoevsky’s letters of 1854–1879, published in “Russkaya Starina” in 1883–1885, as well as of memoirs of various persons about Dostoevsky, published during the life of the editor and after his death. Archival documents revealing new facts of the biography of Dostoevsky, Semevsky and their contemporaries were used and introduced into scientific circulation in the study.

Письма А. Г. и Л. Ф. Достоевских в архиве Национальной библиотеки Франции

The article introduces into scientific circulation two letters written by the widow and daughter of F. M. Dostoevsky in 1912 and 1924 and addressed to the famous French director Jacques Copeau. These documents were discovered as a result of archival searches in the J. Copeau foundation in the National Library of France. The two letters are connected by their subject — the debut production of the play “The Brothers Karamazov” by Copeau at the Paris Theater of Arts in 1911. Reviews of the production published in the European and Russian press contain range of opinions: from enthusiastic to sharply critical. In his letter A. G. Dostoevskaya praised Copeau’s drama, however, she familiarized herself with it without seeing the theatrical production itself, by reading the book that the director had sent her. The publication of Copeau’s play, which is based on the novel “The Brothers Karamazov,” is a little-known exhibit of the Memorial Museum of F. M. Dostoevsky, established by the writer’s widow in 1889. It is mentioned only in the notebook of A. G. Dostoevskaya 1912–1913. The year of inclusion of published Copeau’s play in the collection of the Memorial Museum of F. M. Dostoevsky is established based on the letter and the notebook of the writer’s widow. The letter from L. F. Dostoevsky contains information about her communication with such famous French writers as Jacques Copeau, Irénée Mauget and Paul Bourgeois, as well as about the attempts of the copyright heiress to receive remuneration for the production undertaken by Copeau. These details augment the currently scarce information about the emigration period in the biography of the writer’s daughter. The appendix to the article contains the letters of A. G. and L. F. Darovoye Estate is the place where F. M. Dostoevsky spent his childhood (1832–1836). The article analyzes the results of excavations in the central part of the Darovoye estate carried out in 2005–2020. The dating of remnants of buildings, complexes (mainland pits), as well as the entire lens of the cultural layer as a whole is considered. Based on the collection, which includes coins, stamps on glass and porcelain objects, ceramics, objects made of non-ferrous metals and iron, the author concludes that there were two main periods of development of the estate within its modern borders. The first refers to the mid-18th — early 19th centuries, the second covers the second half of the 19th — first half of the 20th century. An analysis of the ceramics collection allowed us to identify the types of ceramics characteristic of the 1820s — 1830s. The author concludes that the time period between the Napoleonic Wars to the 1850s is not represented in the present collection and suggests that during the “Dostoevsky period” center of the estate was located outside the current museum borders.

The article describes peculiar features of aesthetics and poetics of “sadistic verses” in the creative work of modern Austrian poet E. Yandle, Russian author A. Grygoriev and Belarusian masters of artistic word V. Zhybul and V. Burlak. Using the means of grotesque, carnivalization, illogic and black humour the authors show their protest against an excessive normativity and nihilistic pathos to modern reality with its standards, and create a peculiar lyrical hero – a weirdo, an eccentric person who falls into the chain of catastrophes, crashes and accidents.
