Discontinuum-continuum: the theory of composition by Julio Estrada. The Julio Estrada’s output is still the unexplored area, what creates the opportunity to study the phenomenon called discontinuum-continuum. During the last 36 years of the creative activity, Estrada has developed several aspects of the macro timbre that integrate several compounds of a composition. In his research, Estrada confronts two different situations in the compositional process: continuous transformation of the sound and chronographical method, using strictly defined recording process in order to receive three-dimensional movements of the sound in the topological order. As a result of existing these two situations, a musical work is impossible to be defined by one technique or musical style. Examination of the theory of composition called discontinuum-continuum allows one to understand a new methodology of musical creation that involves scientific research of the physical phenomenon of sound and introspection of the imagination of the sound.

This article presents a possible model for teaching 9th grade Literature material related to the Bible and the Old Bulgarian literature by applying the knowledge that the students have acquired during the Information Technology classes. The demonstration of the student presentations about famous Bulgarian monasteries favors the formation of teamwork skills, the creative usage of the Internet resources and the improvement of the knowledge connected with the subjects studied in 9th grade.

Ролята и значението на италианските научни издания при формирането на фонда на Университетската библиотека „Св. Климент Охридски“

The article presents an analysis of the Italian scientific literature acquired in the library collection from its founding in 1888 to 1903, fulfilling one of the main tasks – “to collect and store foreign literature as the most important part of the library’s collections”. Italian scientific editions are one of the five main components of the collection of Italian rare and valuable books in the University Library. The emergence of Italian editions in the first years after the founding of the library is due primarily to the role of Italy in Europe’s cultural history, secondly to the changed geopolitical circumstances that took place after the Liberation. The purchase of Italian scientific and scholarly literature, which fills a gap in the period of the fundamental development of library collections (especially in the field of humanities), is essential for the progress of the University Library and is among the priorities of the newly established Bulgarian University. The largest volume group in the collection of Italian rare and valuable editions is the group of scientific publications. It contains 283 titles in several fields – law, history, philology, philosophy, pedagogy, and philological sciences. Detailed analysis of the Italian scientific literature in the library collections shows that most of the scientific editions in various research fields retain significant.

The Ageing Poet and Death Anxiety: Art as Existential Therapy in John Pepper Clark’s Of Sleep And Old Age

Death anxiety refers to the human experience of death awareness and the accompanying inescapable disquiet it provokes. It is a phenomenon in human existence which has attracted substantial studies from existential and psychological perspectives. Noting that every individual experiences this anxiety at some point in life, largely as a result of the awareness of the inevitability of death, the manner and extent to which it is experienced vary from individuals. Meanwhile, existential reflections have described ‘death acceptance’ as the healthy route to lessening this angst. It therefore presupposes that acceptance of death (i.e. knowing that one is a being-towards-death and therefore embracing and acknowledging it) is existentially therapeutic. On this note, in studying J. P. Clark’s Of Sleep and Old Age, artistic creativity is being constructed in the study as an existential therapy against death anxiety for the poetic persona. It is premised, on the one hand, on the poet’s eloquent vision of the boredom of existence and the horror of death which characterize the atmosphere of the text. On the other, the poet’s age has been considered as a factor-agent which has bestowed on him the capacity to be conscious of an imminent death, thereby accepting it via keen reflections in his art. The study adopts two theoretical models in existential studies: (1) Monika Ardelt’s ‘Wisdom’, ‘Religiosity’ and ‘Purpose in Life’ and (2) John Sommers-Flanagan and Rita Sommers-Flanagan’s model of ‘Existential Therapy’ to assess the sway and/or centrality of death anxiety to understanding the text.

Metadiscourse, Writer Identity and Reader Construction among Novice Arabic-Speaking ESL Writers

This study used qualitative analyses to explore novice ESL writers’ concepts of writers, readers and texts. Metadiscourse studies tabulate frequencies of discourse markers in order to characterise the different ways novices and experts, native-speakers and non-native speakers, construct themselves as writers, engage with their readers, and guide readers through their text. But the picture created by these descriptive statistics lacks many content areas voiced by student writers, including their reliance on visual content, and their emotions. Student writers’ experiences in a world saturated by visual media and marketing views are also factors shaping how they construct their identities as writers, the identities of their projected readers, and how they understand what they are doing when writing text. This study used content and transitivity analyses to assess how Arabic native-speaker novices understand themselves as writers, how they project their readers’ identities, and how they try to engage them. Results show that visuals are indistinct from text, and verbs of seeing are used for reader understanding, in novice writers’ sense of their texts, and how they understand engaging the reader. These novices have a demographically granular assessment of audiences, but aim to please readers with expected content rather than challenge them with academic content, and they downplay important elements of teacher talk, syllabus and second-language (L2) composition instruction, particularly data, research, structure and language.

Peut-on vivre sans noblesse ? Le problème du « réalisme » dans le roman des XIXe-XXe siècles

In the Western European novel, the death of the nobleness of the soul brings to life the “social realism” characteristic of Balzac’s work. This change is signified by the transformation of the novel’s protagonist from a moral into a social individual (S. Hadzhikosev). Later, this development will logically progress into the ascension of the antihero and conclude with the “cynical realism” (“réalisme cynique”), preached by authors like Frédéric Beigbeder. Reflecting on several major novels written in the 19th and 20th centuries, this article strives to answer the principal question of whether the novelist could take another realistic path, and tries to imagine what this path would look like.

The review article discusses the book Po pierwsze. O literaturze dla dzieci (i nie tylko) [Firstly: About Children’s Literature (and not only)] co-authored by literary scholars from the University of Silesia in Katowice (Poland): Iwona Gralewicz-Wolny and Beata Mytych-Forajter (2019). The book is a continuation of the publication of the same researchers entitled Uwolnić Pippi! Twórczość dla dzieci wobec przemian kultury [Free Pippi! Children’s Literature and Cultural Changes] (2013). In both, the emphasis is clearly put on the Nordic, i.e. Scandinavian and Finnish literature, as evidenced both by the selection of the analysed material and, for example, by the cover illustrations. Therefore, it is discussed first in the review – and from a comparative perspective, since the authors explore the same books as in 2013, mainly the works by Astrid Lindgren and Tove Jansson. The remaining chapters of the volume are divided into classics, which clearly dominate, and newer books. The article concludes with a comment on the title of the reviewed book and its overall evaluation.

Se proponeubicar estas obras desde una tradición que toma en cuenta el eclecticismo y eldinamismo en la materialidad de la cultura escrita: siempre se construye un texto a partirde distintas fuentes para conseguir, de modo activo, algo novedoso. Con base en esto, sedestaca que los autores médicos y cirujanos de esta clase de obras crearon unametatextualidad en dos sentidos: uno propio del quehacer del arte médico y otromeramente literario. Finalmente, se propone entender las funciones de los autoresdentro del entramado al que invita su discurso normativo de estilo áspero, desde el cualdefendieron la idea de un paraíso en el Nuevo Mundo ante el cisma que tuvo la Iglesiaen el siglo XVI.

Zo(o)graphies: Darwinian ‘Evolutions’ of a Fictional Bestiary

The essay puts to the test Darwinian evolutionist theories, especially the key concepts of adaptation, natural selection and survival of the fittest, in the reading of several plots and fictions (some of them Ark-related animal fictions) concerned with evolution, trauma, adaptability, mimicry/mimesis and survival: Julian Barnes’s Flaubert Parrot and A History of the World in 10½ Chapters, Timothy Findley’s Not Wanted on the Voyage, Robert Kroetsch’s The Studhorse Man and John Fowles’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman. Weaving its critical argument with reference to several of Derrida’s reflections – on the impossibility of a pure origin, the proximity between commencement and commandment, the logic of obsequence, or relation between being and following (je suis), applied deconstructively to the traditional hierarchy between the human and the animal, mastery and monstrosity, and logos and bêtise, etc. – ‘Zo(o)graphies’ is structured in a series of interlinked tableaux, bestiaries as well as insets (Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow, Jacques Derrida’s Glas). Following from the opening evocation of Peter Greenaway’s Vermeer-themed film A Zed & Two Noughts, which introduces the joint semantics of zographein: to paint from life, and zoon: animal, discreetly at work throughout, this study will eventually attempt to recast the problematic of the evolution of literature and literary forms as involution and regression.

The paper focuses on identifying and methodizing key strategies and ways of rendering culture specific information in Portuguese translations of Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin and aims at assessing their adequacy. Culture differences between Russia, Portugal, and Brazil provide grounds for cross-cultural barriers, the negative effect of which could be minimized if translation bridges the gap between the source and target cultural worlds. This research relies on culture specific lexical items known as ‘realia’ to examine how culture code is transferred in Russian-to-Portuguese translation of fiction. The study resulted in a new translation model providing an algorithm for rendering culture specific words. The model uses a complex of criteria that allow assessing equivalence and adequacy of items in the target language to those in the source language. Applying the model in the course of Russian-to-Portuguese translation will advance theoretically motivated decisions and contribute to the methodology of pre-translation fiction text analysis.

La promoción de justicia social a través de un testimonio: el caso de Juana Doña

Juana Doña describes her book Desde la noche y la niebla as a novel-testimony, but not an autobiographical one. This story about her life as a militant in the communist ranks, the Spanish Civil War, and her imprisonment mark the narrative evolution that transgresses any taboo imposed by Francisco Franco’s censorship. Doña relies on her memory and her present self-awareness to remember and decide, respectively, which events are related, and which are silenced; how actions are reaffirmed, and which information is omitted; and how the narrative pronoun changes according to her own life or the collective struggle. The book functions as an individual catharsis, both for the author and the readers. I propose to analyze the writing process of this book as a promotion of justice weapon, following Kimberly Nance’s theory about the ethical decisions made by the author of the testimony and inferring a new role for the reader as a timeless agent in social struggle.

La expresión literaria del trauma histórico en dos novelas contemporáneas latinoamericanas: „Amuleto” (R. Bolaño, 1999); „Insensatez” (H. Castellanos Moya, 2004)

Writing about memory involves balancing on the limits of the symbolizable and the unspeakable of trauma – individual and social – putting together puzzles in which some of the pieces do not fit and others have been lost. The aforementioned novels, both within the imaginary of disenchanted impotence in the face of the reconstructive faculty of memory in personalities devastated by state violence, share traits that connect them: both confront the difficulties of a pathological narrative by posing it from a delirious and/or dislocated discursive inquiry in which the authors sustain the literary possibility of anamnesis. The aim of this article is to explore the fragmentary, fetishizing construction of the paradoxes of memory in the aesthetic constitution of both novels as the only possible support in front of the irreparable damage produced by social subjugation. Through stylistic traits, the reconstructive, salvific viability of traumatic memory is renewed, and at the same time put into crisis.

“La historia que nos ha sido arrebatada”: crisis de representación de la memoria y la historia en „Entrada libre” de Carlos Monsiváis

In Entrada libre (1987), Carlos Monsiváis, ruminates about the importance of civil resistance in Mexico after decades of political instability, corruption, and violence. The cruel actions of the ‘dirty war’ left an unstable democratic system and an absent-minded population, which was still trying to understand the violent repression against left-wing groups. Under these conditions, Monsiváis questions the role of civil society in the production of mechanisms of resistance and reconciliation against a large history of abusive treatments and misuses that generated crisis in the country. This essay rethinks the representation of memory and history in the chronicles of Carlos Monsiváis. This project analyzes how the depiction of an the everyday life becomes an alternative method of expression for the a society in resistance, as well as a reevaluation of the meaning behind “historia nacional” and memory as the foundation of the perspective of time in Mexican society.

To Choose or not to Choose Violence? – Visiting how the Meanings of the Romanian Verb “a bate” Translate into Hindi

The present paper follows the journey of the Romanian verb “a bate” (to beat, to hurt, to fight etc.) through the depths of language, uncovering its many uses. Bridging cultural and linguistic distances, it also explores the contextual requirements and changes that happen in Hindi when wanting to obtain the same meanings as those conveyed by the Romanian verb. In addition, it reflects on how a social media post that starts out as a topic for ridicule may become a source for semantic analyses.

Metaphors of Liberation: Exploring the Imagistic Techniques and Visual Language in Tagore’s Chandalika

Rabindranath Tagore’s dramatic techniques employ a rich tapestry of symbolic language, where imagery serves as a vehicle for both narrative progression and the expression of complex social critiques. Set against the backdrop of rigid caste hierarchies prevalent in society, the play presents the transformative journey of Prakriti, an untouchable woman who confronts the deeply ingrained social prejudices of her time. Through its poetic language and richly layered imagery, Chandalika goes beyond a mere narrative of social critique to become a profound meditation on human dignity, identity, and freedom. Through a detailed analysis of these imagistic elements, this study highlights how Tagore’s visual language not only enriches the dramatic experience but also invites a deeper understanding of the socio-cultural issues addressed in the play. The paper argues that Chandalika serves as a powerful example of how metaphors of liberation, when intertwined with visual symbolism, can transcend the constraints of conventional drama to deliver a potent message of human dignity and self-worth.
