This multiauthored monograph puts forward an interdisciplinary approach to the chivalric code, developed in the Middle Ages, whose broad tradition has expanded since those times up to the 21st century and is cultivated in various areas of life, both in Europe and the rest of the world. The authors gathered in this work belong to numerous disciplines, including history, literary studies, and cultural studies; moreover, among the texts included, one might find even the papers contributed by an archaeologist and a sport historian. By all means does it prove that the issue tackled in this monograph touches upon an important cultural phenomenon, which – regardless of the influences and “borrowings” exchanged between the differing civilisations – lays the foundations for the development of any of the human communities. The work is recommended not only to scholars, but also to a broader audience of people interested in the chivalric culture with is traditions and shifts.

Milk and Dairy Products in the Medicine and Culinary Art of Antiquity and Early Byzantium (1st–7th Centuries AD)

The following publication constitutes a continuation of a longstanding research conducted by both authors on nourishment, dietetics, pharmacology and gastronomy in the Late Antiquity and early Byzantium. The book was created based primarily on Greek medical treatises composed from the 1st to 7th century, but it takes into account data that originates outside of this collection.The goal of the authors was to present the knowledge of the people in antiquity and Byzantium on milk and dairy products. To achieve that they attempted to translate into contemporary language the way of thinking of then doctors, and to present main points of the theory propagated by them. In particular, the authors have shown ways of utilizing aforementioned alimentary products as food and medicine. Thus, they consciously encroach the area of history of pharmacology and gastronomy. Even though the nature of their research led the authors to focus on conclusions in the field of the history of food and medicine, they also take up the issues related to society and economy of this period.

The monograph deals with the problems of radio acting and radio directing. Both of these components are interrelated, in theory reflecting their creative role in the origin of radio drama. The research is focussed on the work of two important Czech radio directors: Jiří Horčička and Josef Melč and their best achievements dating back to the seventies and eighties twenties of the 20th century. Its methodology is based on the structuralist theory of Jiří Veltruský, whose structural and semiotic theory is applied to radio theory. Apart from Veltruský, the research is also grounded on the basic monographs by Czech radio theoreticians, in the first place on the publications by Jan Czech and Alena Štěrbová, and also on the theory of radio dramatization of fiction by Jan Lopatka.

Old Masters in New Colours

The study of the artworks of the Old Masters has long been the prerogative of art historians alone. Expertise and other art-historical methods can now make much greater use than ever before of the findings of the so-called exact sciences. These make it possible to acquire new knowledge about works of art of the past that is not obvious to our eyes. Imaging and instrumental methods for the study of works of art often allow us to literally “look into the painting”, below the surface of what we see, and observe the work in different areas of the invisible spectrum of electromagnetic radiation, for example. By using various research methods – with the necessary caution and awareness of their limitations – it is often possible to gain insight into the hypothetical process of the creation of the work and into the painting’s layers. It is possible to characterize the material nature or technological processes or to study the author’s changes and later interventions in the work. Various research methods allow us to see artworks from different perspectives and to study them figuratively speaking “in new colours”, often the colours in which they appear to our eyes using a variety of imaging methods. How an art historian can work with technological knowledge and to what extent he can rely on it at all is demonstrated and addressed in a total of seven case studies dealing with hanging paintings by Old Masters from the collections of the Archbishopric of Olomouc and the Olomouc Museum of Art.

Obraz souseda: diskurzivní analýza českých a polských literárněvzdělávacích textů

The theme of the image of the neighbour is understood in the present work as the image of Poland and Polish culture in Czech textbooks serving literary education from the beginning of schooling to the final school leaving exam and the image of the Czech Republic in Polish textbooks. Over 300 textbooks were analysed for the purposes of the thesis. The image of the neighbour can be divided into primary and secondary. The primery one concentrate on the headings Czech, Czech Republic and the Czech authors. The image of the Czech Republic and Czech culture in Polish textbooks is represented in particular by the work Švejk, then Václav Havel and his work The Power of the Powerless, Milan Kundera and Bohumil Hrabal - especially Ostře sledované vlaky. The only other artist of Czech nationality who is mentioned on a regular basis is Alfons Mucha, but often without information that he is Czech. The image of Poland and Polish culture in Czech literature textbooks is presented by Tuwim's and Brzechwa's verses at the first level, but usually without further information about the author. In later grades, pupils are introduced to Henryk Siekiewicz and Adam Mickiewicz, and the most prominent representation of Polish authors is in textbooks for secondary schools, although these are often very brief mentions. The secondary image is focused on the context and common historical experiences. There is not much room in textbooks for looking back at how a neighbouring country experienced a given phase, the biggest being on the subject of communism.

The correspondence between Bohuslav Martinů and Frank Rybka often surprises with the directness, frankness and lightness of the composer as he asks for advice and help or describes everyday events. Frank Rybka was the composer's childhood friend and from the 1940s onwards was among his closest confidants. As a result, the writing is casual and relaxed. It reminds us of conversations between age-old comrades, where no topics, questions or requests are off the table. It is direct, playful, but also hedonistic. Additionally, however, it contains the composer's final will and testament from the dramatic year of 1948. After their arrival in March 1941, Frank Rybka helped the Martinů family build a new life in the United States. He organised their living quarters, transport, books, new contacts, helped negotiate royalties, find musicians, as well as provide Bohuslav Martinů with alibis for his holiday jaunts. This supportive role is also emphasized in the solitary letter from Martinů's girlfriend Rosalie Barstow. This first volume of correspondence with Frank Rybka highlights the origin and performance of a number of Bohuslav Martinů's compositions. It documents the complicated search for a soloist for his Cello Concerto No. 2, for the title of the composition Thunderbolt P-47, the work on the opera Mirandolina or Martinů's musings about Dostoyevsky's novel The Possessed. An ostensibly breezy exterior disguises the cavalcade of dramatic events that occurred to the composer and his wife Charlotte during the years 1941-1954.

"The Church of Our Lady before Týn, since the 14th century the main parish church of the Old Town, after the Hussite Wars the main church of the Utraquist Church in Bohemia and Moravia and an unmissable dominant feature of the historical centre of Prague, is the second most important medieval sacral building in Prague after St. In syntheses of the history of Czech Gothic architecture, it is often ranked at the forefront of the development of the architecture of the Luxemburg period, and at the same time the completion of the church after the Hussite Revolution is mostly presented as the most important building of the time of George of Poděbrady. On closer inspection, however, the ideas of many authors regarding the identification of the pre-Hussite and post-Hussite parts of the church differ fundamentally, which raises important questions for the understanding of the architecture of the Poděbrady period. The present book on the Late Gothic completion of the Old Town Church of Our Lady of before Týn attempts to contribute at least partially to a more detailed treatment of the architecture of the Poděbrady period, which summarises many years of research on the building."

Leonard Cohen, the Modern Troubadour

This monograph arose from thinking about the literary tradition as described by the Anglo-American modernist writers Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot. In their view, the tradition of European love-lyrics crystallized in the work of the medieval Occitan troubadours, who represented the cultural and political milieu of the Occitanie of that period and whose work reflected the religious influences of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Nowadays, it is not surprising that contemporary artists draw on the troubadour poets and that they are even contrasted with them by critics. Such is the case of Leonard Cohen, who, during his career, revealed erudition in medieval poetry and religion and whose work shows many parallels with the work of his Occitan predecessors.

Hidden Heroes: Three Cases of the Mexican Noir Novel examines the novels of three writers who enriched Mexican crime fiction between 1976 and 2014. The first is Paco Ignacio Taibo II, considered by literary critics to be the founder and leading promoter of the noir subgenre in Mexico. The second author is Juan Hernández Luna, who incorporated fantastical elements into his work and revitalized Mexican noir. The last author is Gabriel Trujillo Munoz, who set his novels in the frontier north, but whose work cannot be simplistically classified as popular 'narcoliterature'. The selected works are analyzed using Doležel's theory of fictional worlds in an attempt to explore what characterizes the chosen narrative worlds and at the same time to demonstrate that the characters of the ""detectives"" of the Mexican noir novel are united by the concept of hidden heroism.

This volume contains 56 items of correspondence (letters, post card) from the years 1932 and 1933. Even so, these documents are unique and authentic expressions, in which Martinů remarks on both his personal and his professional life - with the aim to share his news, intentions, and opinions firstly with his closest relatives but secondly also, through them, to a broader circle of his friends in Polička and Czechoslovakia. The Czech version provides an exact diplomatic transcription of Martinů's manuscript letters.

First of all, the so-called Abele Spelen, the first worldly theatre pieces written in Dutch. The second focus is on the play Elckerlijc, the best-known rhetoric Dutch play from the late fifteenth century and the third on the late-medieval miracle play Mariken van Nieumeghen. A collection of correspondence with Miloš Šafránek, Czech diplomat, music publicist, promoter of the work and biographer of B. Martinů contains diplomatic transcriptions of one hundred and sixty-eight letters, six postcards, five correspondence notes, one telegram and one sticker from the period 1928-1959. The correspondence is mostly one-sided, addressed to M. Šafránek, with M. Šafránek being the sender of only two items. The authors of the edition respect the specifics of Martinů's linguistic expression, which is why they chose the method of diplomatic transcription of letters. The entire text is supplemented by extensive annotation, which not only illuminates the historical context and the political situation in the most turbulent years of the 20th century, but also comments on the genesis of the works, the circumstances of performing, recording and publishing Martinů's compositions.
