The study deals with the issue of the Slovak national and state myth. It examines the genesis of these myths and their formation in the different historical conditions throughout history. The Slovak national and state myth was influenced by the cultural and civilizational factors of the territory inhabited by the Slovaks, interaction with other nations, social and political conditions. The Slovak national and state myth was born and matured gradually from the 17th century onwards as an expression of the collective identity of the Slovaks as a nobility and later as a nation in the struggle for recognition of their own equality and equivalence in historical Hungary. It grew out of the conviction of the autochthony and originality of the Slovaks and their belonging to the great Slavic nation. It followed the original oral tradition dating back to the Great Moravian period.

The paper’s focus will be an examination of the various manifestations, by which the culture of the Cyrillo-Methodian heritage manifested itself in the territory of Rurikid (Kievan) Rus´. The key moment was the transfer, acceptance, and subsequent adoption of the Slavic liturgy, along with Slavic literature. Today it is almost certain that the East Slavic environment absorbed the cultural legacy of the Cyrillo-Methodian mission, probably from the environment of the first Bulgarian Empire. These cultural manifestations in language, religiosity, and literature could settle down only after the adoption of Christianity. However, it is not clear exactly when or how this could happened. The adoption of Christianity fundamentally transformed the East Slavic area. Gradual Slavization of the elites with the adoption of Christianity and the liturgical language was established within the Rurikid dynasty. Therefore, it remains questionable how long the legacy of the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition travelled before it reached the Carpathian Basin with various cultural expressions during the time of the first Hungarian kings.

The paper deals with the phenomenon of national cuisine and traditional food in the perception of Slovaks living abroad. Through a key study in selected localities in Canada, it follows the dishes referred to as „typical Slovak,“ their preferences, methods of preparation and presentation. As it turns out, the processes of perception of national cuisine or dishes labeled as typically Slovak in the environment of Slovaks abroad often have an emotional charge rather than rational justifications. In general, it could be said that the perception of the so-called national cuisine is a metaphor conditioned by individual experiences, patterns or family and historical experiences rather than a precisely identifiable reality, and they are closely correlated with the formation or maintenance of the national consciousness of individuals abroad.

The article interprets a personal letter of Vasil Levski (1840–1873) to Lyuben Karavelov (1834–1879), which presents the problems facing the work of the revolutionary. His judgments about the personal qualities of other activists of the national liberation movement are analyzed. His fears that government spies are well informed about conspiratorial work are indicated. The thesis is launched that Vasil Levski had intuitions about the upcoming failures in the revolutionary organization, as well as about the death sentence that awaited him, because of the leadership of the anti-imperial secret organization.

The article is devoted to the analysis of folk literature monuments, namely parable texts, presented in popular engravings. Parables used to serve as both entertaining and edifying readings; they could also be used as material for church sermons. Popular engravings may involve classical prose parables and ones composed in syllabic verse, which correlate with the “school” baroque poetic tradition. Part of the parables featured on engraved sheets originate from the gospel texts. Other parables can be associated with both translated and original works of Old Russian literature. Besides, one distinguishes parable texts sourced from Western European engravings. Most of the parables, which became part of popular engravings, come from the collection of stories Velikoe Zertsalo (‘Great Mirror’) translated from Polish into Church Slavonic. Other texts of non-evangelical origin made their way to engravings through the collections Prolog (‘Prologue’) and Zlatoust (‘Chrysostom’). It is important to conclude that the Slavia Orthodoxa and the Slavia Romana traditions share common moralising storylines.

Dejan Djokić has written an important new book, a complete history of Serbs and Serbia from the initial Balkan migration to the present decades since the wars of Yugoslavia’s dissolution. Although one of the new Concise Histories from Cambridge University Press, covering this long history requires a long book. Well written and well argued, it balances the core of Serb identity against discontinuities. They range from Tsar Dušan’s over-expanded empire and Ottoman occupation to revolt and independence, followed by occupation in two world wars and inclusion in the two Yugoslavias.

In the article, the attempt is to shed light on Atanasije Stojković, as a prominent figure of early modern Serbian culture, a recognized scientist, and not least as a private person, since this also had an impact on his multifaceted socio-historical engagement throughout then-Europe. Stojković was personally a fairly ambitious man, but still with a heightened sense of duty towards his nation. That is why he made noteworthy contributions in the area of national culture, even though he was a nature scientist by education and profession. The example of his existence can be seen as paradigmatic for the entry/return of Serbs into the cultural arena of modern Europe. In the paper, a brief description of Stojković’s efforts in the field of physics and philosophy/metaphysics of nature is also given.

Modernity and technology are closely related to one another. When modernization began in the middle of the 18th century, it was followed almost immediately and in the closest way by the rapid technical development. The movement of modernity profoundly transformed all segments of experiential reality. It transformed politics, religion and philosophy, among other things. It also changed many of the basic conditions of society. However, nowhere, in any field of human activities, did it result in such profound changes as in the general way of human life, which had previously existed in people’s specific and close dependence on nature, regardless of worldview, religion or ideology. The drive for self-mastery has had immense and often unintended consequences. In this paper, the intention is to demonstrate some of the „inevitable consequences” of modernity’s technical hubris and the shortcomings of techno-utopianist’s “pervasive technology” from a decidedly conservative point of view. Furthermore, there is an arguing that the “Luddite” or machine-destroying attitude towards technology is not the primary objective of the conservative, that is, maintenance of a purely instrumental relationship with technology, reducing it back to technique, while preserving one’s inner spiritual and mental integrity.

The SAS Institute for the Rural Studies, within the Department of Social Sciences, was founded on June 10, 1947, with the appointment of Sreten Vukosavljević, a professor at the Faculty of Law in Belgrade, as its manager. The basic task of the Institute was to study the development of social life in the countryside, the existence and development of land ownership, the organization of the village as a settlement, the organization of the family settlement, the evolution of the organization of agricultural and other works; consanguinity, birth rate and sexual morality; forms of behavior; religious life and the religious world, helping each other, leisure and entertainment, health and consciousness, etc. Due to the lack of sufficient staff, especially professional staff, and then the opposition of the Institute’s most influential associates to the demands of the manager Sreten Vukosavljević, the Institute was slow to realize the set goals and tasks, which ultimately resulted in the resignation of Sreten Vukosavljević, and then the closure of the Institute on March 1, 1954.

Bayburt, geographically located on the historical Silk Road that connects the Eastern Black Sea region with the Northeastern Anatolia region, is one of the ancient cities in the region. Throughout history, due to its location on the trade route, this city has been continuously inhabited, and it possesses a rich and deep cultural heritage. This cultural heritage, although constantly evolving in today’s digital world with rapid advancements in transportation and communication, has been largely preserved and passed down to the present day. In this regard, one of the most special cities in our country, Bayburt, has greatly benefited from individuals who both understand and actively preserve its culture. One of these individuals is İmdat Sancar. İmdat Sancar is one of the rare individuals who fit UNESCO’s definition of “culture bearers” with his knowledge of traditional folk songs, the songs he has composed, his participation in folk music events, and the traditional “sağdıç düğünü” (best man’s wedding) ceremonies he organizes. His special quality lies not only in his knowledge of the culture but also in his ability to actively practice and pass it on to others. The subject of this study is the traditional “sağdıç düğünü” (best man’s wedding) ceremonies known by İmdat Sancar. These ceremonies are actually categorized as village performance plays, falling within the realm of theatrical performances. These plays were collected from İmdat Sancar himself using interview methods and were analyzed from the perspective of Functional Theory. Content analysis was also conducted. As a result of the examination, it was determined that these plays serve various functions within the community and encompass a wealth of traditional knowledge and practices that are integral to people’s daily lives.

In the years after the First World War, after 1918, in the newly formed Kingdom of SHS, the need to rebuild the destroyed buildings in the cities was necessary. In the production of the residential architecture of Skopje in the period from 1922-1941 architects and engineers, emigrants from Russia, during 1919-1921 left a special mark while settling in Skopje: Ivan Artemushkin, Boris Dutov, Evgenij Datskov; Vyacheslav Bujko, Efraim Bronstein, Nikolai Burhanovski, Konstantin V. Khomenko... A few Russian architects who, through temporary work in the municipal services of the technical department, acquired a good reputation, but also some initial financial capital, already from the mid-1920s opened independent technical bureaus (Vyecheslav Bujko; Boris Dutov – technical bureau "Vardar" (1921-22); Konstantin Khomenko - technical bureau "Kultura" (1923). The entire production of all these architects and engineers, which essentially formed the central city core of Skopje, was for the most part permanently destroyed by the earthquake of 1963. This paper reviews the architects and engineers, emigrants from Russia, who settled in Skopje during the period 1919-1921.

It is already becoming a general fact in science that there is a lack of empirical study of the development of Macedonian literary criticism and critical thought in the 19th century. Slavco Koviloski will try to fill that gap by illuminating and communicating more than fifty authors and over one hundred and fifty critical achievements through his book Macedonian Literary Criticism in the XIX Century, showing the continuity and „the existence of Macedonian literary criticism in the 19th century, as a way of interpreting, studying and evaluating literary works" (Koviloski, 2022: 37).
