Encyclopaedia Slavica Sanctorum: Further Developments

The paper analyses statistical data concerning the use of the electronic Encyclopedia slavica sanctorum, an e-product with information about the texts about saints in medieval and early modern Slavonic manuscripts and printed books and in records of oral stories of the Bulgarian popular culture. The users' and guests' operations (viewing dates, viewing objects, and searching) are discussed and thus the advantages of this e-encyclopedia are revealed.

Digitizing of Bulgarian National Radio Archives

The paper discusses issues connected with the audio archives digitization in the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR). It contains an overview of the audio archive digitization process, the current situation about the BNR archives, setting up a workplace for BNR digitizing of audio archives. The workplace for digitizing of audio archives manages the document creation, verification and approving the file passport, with metadata as a part from the electronic catalogue in the BNR archives phonoteque. Examples are provided to demonstrate the procedures of digitizing in details.

PRELIDA (PREserving LInked DAta) is an FP7 Coordination Action funded by the European Commission under the Digital Preservation Theme. PRELIDA targets the particular stakeholders of the Linked Data community, including data providers, service providers, technology providers and end user communities. These stakeholders have not been traditionally targeted by the Digital Preservation community, and are typically not aware of the digital preservation solutions already available. So an important task of PRELIDA is to raise awareness of existing preservation solutions and to facilitate their uptake.

XML-based Approach for Digital Representation of Knitting Patterns

This paper views the problems related to the development of knitting software for hand-made knitting. It presents an XML approach for digital representation of knitting patterns. Its purpose is to develop a uniform and platform independent description of simple graphics primitives corresponding to different types of stitches. The XML language can be built on CAD systems for handmade knitting. The users of these software applications could be: people, who are interested in knitting as a hobby; editors of knitting hobby magazines; ethnographers, who invest in the area of old traditional costumes and hand-made knitting.

Digital Holographic Printing Methods for 3D Visualization of Cultural Heritage Artifacts

Holography enables capture and reconstruction of the optical field scattered from three-dimensional (3D) objects. The hologram encodes both amplitude and phase of the field under coherent illumination, whereas photography records only the amplitude by incoherent light. 3D visualization feature of holography motivates expansion of research efforts dedicated to digital holographic imaging methods as a holographic display or a holographic printer. The paper presents two holographic 3D printing techniques which combine digital 3D representation of an object with analog holographic recording. Generation of digital contents is considered for a holographic stereogram printer and a recently proposed wavefront printer. These imaging methods could be applied to specific artifacts which are difficult to be recorded by conventional analog holography.

A Web Application for Creating and Presenting 3D Object Expositions

This paper describes a recently-developed web application for creating and presenting expositions of three-dimensional objects online. The system allows authors to create exhibitions of 3D models and share them on the Internet, where everybody will be able to view them. The latest HTML5 technologies allow the use of modern web browsers to render the 3D collections without any additional requirements, such as installing third party plugins, which makes the system easily accessible for users operating on different environments.

ELDORADO Project. A Major Upgrade of National Library Services in Hungary

Hungarian libraries have formed a consortium that led by the National Széchényi Library (NSZL). This consortium is maintaining a project called ELDORADO that provides a new service model and infrastructure environment in digital library field. Our company Cultware is the main system developer partner, focusing on the building of the whole hardware and software architecture and infrastructure of the project. The main scope of the project can be set by some major objectives: Providing digital access for library holdings regardless of their copyright or digitization status. It occurs a large set of on-demand digitisation activities, the registration of digital documents that have digitized already in different libraries in a common single service envi-ronment. These activities have coordinated by a library consortium in partnership with all the relevant stakeholders on the related fields. Offering equal and remote access to digital information to all Hungarian spoken people regardless their geographical location is an ultimate goal of the project. Digital access must include a large set of copyrighted materials, orphan works and public domain documents. A major goal (through new collaboration forms with publishers) is to re-publish out-of commerce works in digital format. The project includes collection, preservation and publication activities together in a single service envi-ronment.

PanamaTipico.com: a Born Digital Initiative for Researching and Preserving Panama’s Cultural Heritage

The goal of this paper is to encourage a discussion on whether or not the experience of Pan-amaTipico.com is comparable to the experiences of similar projects in developing countries in Eastern Europe and elsewhere.

Supporting and Enhancing Research on Cultural Heritage in France: the PATRIMA Project

In this paper, we first overview the French project on heritage called PATRIMA, launched in 2011 as one of the Projets d'investissement pour l'avenir, a French funding program meant to last for the next ten years. The overall purpose of the PATRIMA project is to promote and fund research on various aspects of heritage presentation and preservation. Such research being interdisciplinary, research groups in history, physics, chemistry, biology and computer science are involved in this project. The PATRIMA consortium involves research groups from universities and from the main museums or cultural heritage institutions in Paris and surroundings. More specifically, the main members of the consortium are the two universities of Cergy-Pontoise and Versailles Saint-Quentin and the following famous museums or cultural institutions: Musée du Louvre, Château de Versailles, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Musée du Quai Branly, Musée Rodin. In the second part of the paper, we focus on two projects funded by PATRIMA named EDOP and Parcours and dealing with data integration. The goal of the EDOP project is to provide users with a data space for the integration of heterogeneous information about heritage; Linked Open Data are considered for an effective access to the corresponding data sources. On the other hand, the Parcours project aims at building an ontology on the terminology about the techniques dealing with restoration and/or conservation. Such an ontology is meant to provide a common terminology to researchers using different databases and different vocabularies.

National Infrastructure for University Repositories Possible Model

Paper stresses on the active role of university repositories in sustaining a long-term strategy to increase impact and visibility of Bulgarian research. Authors would like to draw the attention of a critical disadvantage of the research exchange progress in Bulgaria and suggest continuing the development of good practices, in establishing a national information infrastructure, based on an already functioning integrated platform. A short description of Primo Discovery and Delivery solution potential is discussed to show the variety of functional and technological solutions that it can add to a national-wide research exchange network. A brief overview is made of the first institutional repositories, incorporated in Primo and the positive outcomes of the integration.

Manuscript Investigation in the Sinai II Project

This work is concerned with the analysis of historical manuscripts. The manuscripts investigated are partially in a bad condition, due to their age, bad storage conditions etc. These circumstances impede a transcription of the ancient writings, as well as the application of document image analysis methods. Therefore, the writings are imaged with a portable MultiSpectral Imaging acquisition system. By using this non-invasive investigation technique the contrast of the degraded and faded-out writings can be enhanced. In order to gain a further contrast enhancement, a post-processing method has been developed. Additionally, two document analysis methods have been developed in order to facilitate the work of scholars: First, an Optical Character Recognition is de-scribed. Second, a method designed for the automated identification of writers of ancient Slavic manuscripts is explained. This paper provides an overview on the manuscript investigation techniques mentioned.

Animal Metaphors and Idioms in the Corpus of Bulgarian and Ukrainian Parallel Texts

In this study we examine the metaphoric mentions of three wild animals considered to be most important in the Slavic popular tradition, namely the wolf, the bear and the hare, in a Bulgarian–Ukrainian parallel corpus. Our goal is to see what meanings are found most often, how well images from alien world views are accepted by the Bulgarian and the Ukrainian linguistic consciousness, and how translators replace images which are likely not to be interpreted in the desired way.
