Ralph Linton’s article is an attempt to answer the question of what unites and what divides art of Western culture and non-European artistic forms. The aims of the primitive artist are not very different; at bottom; from those of the civilized one. Superficial differences are his lack of intent for naturalistic representation and his greater attention to technical virtuosity; rendered important by his audience’s understanding of the problems and techniques involved in his work. It appears so to the European because the latter does not understand native symbolism.
