Shakespeare’s Hamlet is the first book of the new bilingual library "English Poetic Classics" by the East-West Publishing House. Hamlet is Shakespeare's most popular, and most puzzling, play. It follows the form of a "revenge tragedy," in which the hero, Hamlet, seeks vengeance against his father's murderer, his uncle Claudius, now the king of Denmark. Much of its fascination, however, lies in its uncertainties. Among them: What is the Ghost--Hamlet's father demanding justice, a tempting demon, an angelic messenger? Does Hamlet go mad, or merely pretend to? Once he is sure that Claudius is a murderer, why does he not act? Was his mother, Gertrude, unfaithful to her husband or complicit in his murder?

Shakespeare’s Macbeth is the fourth book of the new bilingual library "English Poetic Classics" by the East-West Publishing House. The bilingual format of this library provides readers with the opportunity to get deeper into the subtleties of the text regarding some of the most valuable works of English literature by comparing original text and its translation, and also to get into the specifics of poetic translation of classical works. In 1603, James VI of Scotland ascended the English throne, becoming James I of England. London was alive with an interest in all things Scottish, and Shakespeare turned to Scottish history for material. He found a spectacle of violence and stories of traitors advised by witches and wizards, echoing James’s belief in a connection between treason and witchcraft. In depicting a man who murders to become king, Macbeth teases us with huge questions. Is Macbeth tempted by fate, or by his or his wife’s ambition? Why does their success turn to ashes? Like other plays, Macbeth speaks to each generation. Its story was once seen as that of a hero who commits an evil act and pays an enormous price. Recently, it has been applied to nations that overreach themselves and to modern alienation. The line is blurred between Macbeth’s evil and his opponents’ good, and there are new attitudes toward both witchcraft and gender.

Shakespeare’s Othello is the second book of the new bilingual library "English Poetic Classics" by the East-West Publishing House. The bilingual format of this library provides readers with the opportunity to get deeper into the subtleties of the text regarding some of the most valuable works of English literature by comparing original text and its translation, and also to get into the specifics of poetic translation of classical works. In Othello, Shakespeare creates powerful drama from a marriage between the exotic Moor Othello and the Venetian lady Desdemona that begins with elopement and mutual devotion and ends with jealous rage and death. Shakespeare builds many differences into his hero and heroine, including race, age, and cultural background. Yet most readers and audiences believe the couple’s strong love would overcome these differences were it not for Iago, who sets out to destroy Othello. Iago’s false insinuations about Desdemona’s infidelity draw Othello into his schemes, and Desdemona is subjected to Othello’s horrifying verbal and physical assaults.

Fletcherian Dramatic Achievement: A Study in the Mature Plays of John Fletcher (1579–1625)

The mature plays of John Fletcher, Shakespeare’s collaborator and successor with the King’s Men, have received little critical attention. This book analyzes the specifics of mature Fletcherian style, proposing a reading that agrees with the Baroque mode. Special attention is given to anachronistic conventions that have been appllied to Fletcherian drama.

L’absurde dans le théâtre Dada et présurréaliste français

The publication focuses on the absurd in the French Dada and pre-surrealist theatre, examining the scenical potential of three texts which have, until now, remained practically unexplored: “La Premiere aventure celeste de Mr. Antipyrine” by T. Tzara, “Les Mysteres de l’amour” by R. Vitrac, and “S’il vous plait” by A. Breton and P. Soupault. The author understands the absurd as an aesthetic category applicable to theatre analysis in general – contrary to the “Theatre of the absurd”, a concept suggested by M. Esslin in order to characterize the avant-garde of the 1950s and often criticized for its lack of precision. The conclusion evaluates Esslin's contribution to the study of the absurd in theatre.

У 2011 році «Асоціація з міжнародних питань» у Празі запросила кафедру соціальної педагогіки педагогічного факультету Університету ім. Т. Ґ. Масарика взяти участь у проекті в Україні, мета якого — розвиток і впровадження нових предметів в українських школах, зокрема у Криму. Йшлося, передусім, про реалізацію вокршопів, спрямованих на мультикультурне та драматичне виховання, які були проведені в десятках шкіл та навчальних закладів на всьому півострові. У цих семінарах у 2011-2017 рр. взяли участь сотні вчителів, психологів, методистів, директорів шкіл та інших фахівців у галузі освіти в згаданому Криму, у центральній Україні (у Києві та Київській області) і в Західній Україні, у Львові. Частиною проекту була співпраця з вищими навчальними закладами в Ялті та Сімферополі та подальша співпраця з Київським національним університетом імені Тараса Шевченка, де в Інституті філології було впроваджено новий предмет «Соціальна комунікація», гарантом якого, власне, стала кафедра соціальної педагогіки.

З 2016 року у рамках проекту «Підтримка розвитку освіти в Україні», реалізованого у співпраці з Університетом ім. Т. Ґ. ТЕАТР У ВИХОВАННІ

У цьому розділі розглянемо важливий напрямок прикладної драми (Applied Drama) — театр у вихованні (Theatre in Education). Дослідимо його основні визначення (Valenta, 2011; Machková, 2016), форми (Pavlovská, 2003), виникнення і розвиток від 60-х до 90-х рр. ХХ ст. (Jackson, Vine, 2013), коли він став частиною більш широкого поняття — прикладної драми; тобто драми, що охоплює всі театральні форми, які містять освітній принцип та використані в особливому соціальному контексті (наприклад, школи, театр у в’язниці) з передбачуваними позитивними змінами (Nicholson, 2005). У кінці розділу ми опишемо одну з форм театру у вихованні — інтерактивний театр (Interactive Theatre) за Сомерсом (2008) і представимо проект інтерактивного театру для учнів 7-го і 8-го класів загальноосвітніх шкіл у Чеській Республіці, який спрямований на розв’язання патологічних соціальних явищ (самогубство, вилучення з колективу на базі соціальних відмінностей між учнями, цькування, погане соціально-економічне підґрунтя учнів) із метою підтримки і розвитку особистісних та соціальних компетенцій учнів. Ми доповнимо розділ прикладами лекцій для шкільних педагогів і сценарієм реалізованої вистави інтерактивного театру.

The presented conference proceeding Slavonic Literary World: Contexts and Confrontation II is a result of the second conference of young Slavists which took place in September 2016 under the auspices of the Institute of Slavonic Studies at Masaryk University. Proceeding consists of 29 papers of Ph.D. students who work at 18 departments, come from 7 European countries (the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Austria, Serbia, Italy, Russia). The papers are written in seven languages.

Ремейк как новый жанр русской драматургии

This paper discusses the phenomenon of the literary remake, which was mainly touched by the Russian literature in the recent years. The vast majority of this type of literary work provokes paying closer attention not only to the reasons but also to the consequences of this phenomenon. The researchers have been having a sceptical approach towards remakes, and even if they do mention remakes among the border genres, seldom do they find them worthy a more thorough study. Concerning the dramaturgy as such, the remake-plays characteristics are listed (in which the signals of the new literary genre are noticeable), the differences between the remake and the rest of the literary genres, and last but not least the doubtful aspects of the remake as a literary genre. Finally, I will try to answer the question if it is possible to accept the remake as a real new genre of the Russian dramaturgy

Влияние школьного театра на драматическое творчество Симеона Полоцкого

In the present work we will show how school theatre influenced dramatic works of Simeon Polotsky. Considering him as a founder of drama genre in Russian baroque literature, we will try to demonstrate the importance of school plays in that process (didactic role, elements of rhetoric, and declamation patterns). We will focus on his two dramas in order to examine this influence: Parable of the Prodigal Son, and On Nebuchadnezzar the King. Further, we will examine the importance of Polish and Ukrainian school theatre, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and Slavonic-Greek-Latin Academy. Moreover, we will focus on the influence of Catholic and Orthodox religions on Simeon Polotsky’s works through the school theatre.

Operní dramaturgie Jurie Dimitrina. Nová etapa v ruské libretologii

Opera Libretto is situated on the border of literature and music. Its controversial status is the reason of the insufficient attention paid to this genre from Philology and Musicology sciences. Another reason of the lack of studies of the genre in the academic environment is its (pseudo) invariability that can be explained by the traditional perception of the libretto as a secondary element of the music theatre. Russian librettist Yury Dimtrin is trying to change this point of view, primarily with his own experiments that show almost unlimited possibilities of actualization of the genre. The paper aims to describe a new approach to studying of the libretto genre in a connection with the theatrical experience of Dimitrin and to open a debate about perspectives for its future research.

FROM TANGO TO ROCK ‘N’ ROLL. A COMPARATIVE STUDY IN TWO DISSIDENT DRAMAS

This paper aims to examine Sławomir Mrożek’s Tango and Tom Stoppard’s Rock ‘n’ Roll. Both plays explore the concept of intelligentsia, its role and condition in a postmodern society. Although these plays were written at different periods, they have the same motives of rebellion and conformity. Both texts challenge the conventions of bourgeois drama. Both plays convey an ideological message by criticizing totalitarianism and its influence on society and an individual. Furthermore, popular culture and music that are present in both plays reflect the social and cultural changes of 20th century. Tango and Rock ‘n’ Roll became symbols of a certain culture and ideology. The comparative study of the two plays is aimed at examining such their similarities as, for example, the rise and fall of communist regime in Central Europe.

Teksty, które przepadną, czyli o redaktorskiej władzy estetycznej

The content of the article concerns the creation of aesthetic trends in recent Polish drama. The author compares the categories of power over the production of discourse, proposed by Michel Foucault, to the exercise of editorial or jury power over the publication or rewarding of texts for theater. He identifies two institutions as having the greatest influence - the magazine Dialog and the Gdyńska Nagroda Dramaturgiczna competition. The article raises the issue of texts rejected by those who evaluate them. The author wonders whether perhaps it is these texts that would not become for researchers a real landscape of different realities, when the texts selected by the institutions, are only a slice of it. To this end, she looks at the dramas created during the coronavirus pandemic, taking this event as formative, from which time the texts will become, or perhaps have already become, a vehicle for cultural memory.

Близкородствените бракове в творбите на Менандър

The subject of this paper is the close-kin marriages in Menander’s comedies. The normative preference for close-kin marriage was different in fourth-centry BC Athens from modern societies. However, incestuous relations between full-blood brother and sister pr parent and child were considered wrong, and were never comic material in Menander’s comedy, which was concerned with realities of everyday life. I examine the comic purpose of introducing close-kin marriages in New Comedy, and I try to give explination on the cultural attitude towards endogamy. In order to explain these issues, I classify the close-kin marriages in three groups: (1) Brother-sister marriage, (2) First cousins marriage, (3) Marriage of the epikleros.

Кухнята на Аристофановата комедия „Птиците“: еротика и политика

The article analyzes Aristophanes’ comedy The Birds performed in 414 BC at the City Dionysia and not long after the commencement of the Sicilian Expedition. The play is built largely on the specific culinary code defining the political and cultural „otherness” through „the birds’ life”. Information of this type can be organized into three main groups: – Motifs that characterize „the lifestyle/the diet of birds” scattered throughout the text of the comedy; – To this group gravitates the motive for the creation of the world as culinary confusion in so-called „Ornitogoniya” (vv. 693–702) in the first parabaza. – The alelofagiya’s motive, the motive of killing/eating conspecific, culminating in the episode with the penalty of rebelling against democracy birds (1579–1590; 1637; 1689), baked for the wedding of Pisthetaerus with Basileya.
