Benedykt Tyszkiewicz did not live to see his biography. He was one of the most influential Polish industrialists in the Russian partition in the Kiev governorate. After studies and internships in Belgium and France, he returned to his hometown of Andruszówka and started modernizing the family estate. He managed to modernize the sugar factory in Plisków and set up a machine factory. By marrying Maria Lubomirska, he became associated with the Przeworsk ordinance line of the Lubomirski family from Przeworsk. Through his friendship with his brother-in-law Andrzej Lubomirski, he indirectly influenced the development of the sugar industry in Galicia. During his life in Kresy, he corresponded with Andrzej Lubomirski, with whom he shared his comments on social and, above all, economic issues.

Georg Henisch was originally from Bardejov but spent his entire life as a doctor and a teacher at the Gymnasium of St. Anna in the German town of Augsburg. Henisch also composed several poems during his studies, and these works are less well known than his other writings. Henisch wrote a so-called propempticon, a valedictory poem of farewell, in 1571 on the occasion of the return home of the future evangelical pastor of Slovenska Ľupča, Jan Janči. An obligatory component of the propempticon is praise for the destination or the homeland of the traveller, and in Henisch’s poem 58 of the 148 hexameters are devoted to praising the Kingdom of Hungary. The poet’s description of Hungary is influenced by the image of the country which was widespread in Western Europe in this period and was based on a series of topoi: fertilitas Hungariae, Hungary as a land blessed with rich soil; propugnaculum Christianitatis, Hungary as the shield of Christendom, protecting Christianity from the Ottoman Empire; and querela Hungariae, the lament of Hungary and the appeal for aid against the Turks. Henisch follows this pattern closely, and he describes Hungary as an ideal country, with fertile soil and excellent natural conditions, the homeland of hard-working people and great rulers who will drive out their powerful enemies. The work also mentions the Turkish enemies who are ravaging the land, but Hungary has splendid and fearless leaders, and the poet expresses the hope that the saints will never allow the country to perish.

The article contains methods of disease diagnosing and treatment without examining the patient – solely based on the descriptions of disease symptoms in a letter written by the ills to the medic. The phenomenon of distance treatment has been analysed based on the letters of famous Italian physicians of the sixteenth century (Johannes Baptista Montanus [Italian: Giovanni Battista Monte], Johannes Manardus [Italian: Giovanni Manardo], Francesco Frigimelica, Hieronymus Mercurialis [Italian: Girolamo Mercuriali]). Correspondence of medics is an excellent source for the history of medicine, as it contains information about symptoms, treatment, the recommended diet, advice on how to lead an appropriate lifestyle, as well as recipes and formulas for making medicines. They also wrote about living conditions, personal hygiene, rest, physical activity and a positive attitude towards life. Among Polish patients treated this way were representatives of the ruling dynasty, high-ranking ecclesiastics and wealthy burghers.

The central part of the article is an edition of two letters written by Tomasz Treter (1547–1610) to Szymon Rudnicki, Bishop of Warmia. The letters are stored in the Archives of the Warmian Archdiocese in Olsztyn and in the Princes Czartoryski Library (a branch of the National Museum in Cracow). In these letters, Treter pleaded the cause of the booksellers and bookbinders from Braniewo, Hans and Tobias Bretner; thus, they are an archival source which can shed light on the history of books in Warmia. As indicated in the introduction to the letters, they reveal, among other things, the behind-the-scenes measures taken by Warmian booksellers, who fought against competition from Gdańsk and Königsberg merchants, and they list the types of publications for which the Bretners wanted to maintain a commercial monopoly. Treter’s letters also shed light on the author’s network of social connections – a Warmian canon, draughtsman, engraver, and writer who remained in the service of Cardinal Stanislaus Hosius for many years.

The article draws attention to a mistake made by a copyist of the so-called Zamoyski Codex (MS BN BOZ 28) when recording in the Traska Annals the day’s date of the decisive battle fought by Leszek the Black against the rebels in 1285. The feast day of St Stephen the Pope and Martyr was most likely a part of some obituary record and was mistakenly associated with the battle.

The article presents an edition and analysis of an unknown source document from the time of Mieszko the Tanglefoot from 1207–1211. The source was found in a codex of Dominican provenance from the fifteenth century, with the reference number Lat. I F 212, kept in the National Library of Russia in St Petersburg. The document (or a note) contains the text of a confirmation by Duke Mieszko the Tanglefoot that the church of St Adalbert (Wojciech) in Wrocław belongs to the Canons regular monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Sand in Wrocław. The ducal confirmation mentions a war between the sons of Władysław the Exile returning to Silesia (in 1163) and their uncles ruling in Poland: Boleslaw the Curly and Mieszko the Old. Boleslaw the Tall and Mieszko the Tanglefoot defeated their uncles at the Battle of Modlikowice. This information contradicts the opinion, well-established in historiography, of a peaceful return of the Władysław’s sons to their homeland.
