"Auf unserem Papier findet das meiste gleichzeitig statt": Zum Projekt der Gegenweltgeschichte in Günter Grass' "Der Butt" in kulturökologischer Perspektive

Author(s): Nathalie Kónya-Jobs / Language(s): German Issue: 18/2021

In this article, the novel The Flounder is re-read from the perspective of environmental literary criticism and with a view to the highly topical issues of education for sustainable development. The line of argument moves along the central questions for Grass’s work about the importance of fairy tales and myths for literary-anthropological processes of the formation of meaning, his Enlightenment criticism, his critical understanding of history, his poetics of ‚Vergegenkunft‘ and his examination of feminism, ecology and dystopian visions of the post-human age. The article closes with an outlook on relevant research desiderata. An overview table for a selection of thematic, relevant works should serve as an inspiration to rediscover Grass as a representative of ecocriticism in schools and universities.

"I JUST WANNA CHAT" - ADJUSTING TEACHER ROLES TO LEARNER NEEDS AND EXPECTATIONS IN ESP

Author(s): Nicoleta Adina PANAIT / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

Speaking is a skill that is part of daily life and people do not like to feel they struggle when they need to cooperate in their speaking turns. Therefore, whenever being asked to teach a conversation class you start wondering whether the learner really sees it as pure free speaking or they may also be interested in having their course “spiced up” with grammar, vocabulary and perhaps some reading and listening. When the course is an institutional one, placed in a professional/ business context, there is already one more stakeholder. This paper is addressing some of the aspects a trainer has to tackle in order to meet both needs and expectations.

"Mislim, realno, tko voli školu?": Iskustvo školovanja osnovnoškolskih dječaka s ADHD-om

Author(s): Andreja Bartolac / Language(s): English,Croatian Issue: 1/2021

Although attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders observed in childhood, ADHD research in Croatia, especially studies involving children, are extremely rare. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to describe the personal everyday school life experiences of boys with ADHD who were studying in elementary schools. This study included a purposive sample of 14 boys with ADHD aged 8 to 11 years who attended mainstream elementary schools. Three semi-structured phenomenological interviews were conducted with each boy. Special attention was given to ensure that the methodological approach used in this study was child-centred, child-friendly, and child-safe. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to analyse the data. Data collected on the school experiences of the boys with ADHD are presented via two themes: (1) challenges of schooling with ADHD, and (2) support at school: the importance of recognition, sensitivity, and relationships. This study demonstrates that boys with ADHD can recognize the challenges associated with their schooling and find it very difficult to take part in school activities that require directing and maintaining attention, organization, perseverance, flexible attention, and working memory. Consequently, the boys reported that they experience failure, frustration, and reduced self-confidence in their own abilities. Boys participating in this study were able to recognize the support received at school from their teachers and teaching assistants, as well as the obstacles that occurred due to misunderstandings, lack of sensitivity to their neurodiversity, and failure to apply the Individualised Education Program. The boys also provided clear descriptions of the adjustments necessary to make their school experience easier. The results of this study illustrate that children with ADHD face specific psycho-social risks, followed by recommendation that their experiences should be considered during the development of educational policies, given their participatory rights and their role as equal stakeholders.

Author(s): Kornelija Mrnjaus / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 2/2018

Values and their role in the life of man and society is a topic that researches in social and humanistic sciences have been dealing with for thousands of years. Although there is still no agreement if the values are reflection of desirable or desired behavior as their universal definition does not exist, there is generally a consensus that it is a construct that serves as a human guide for survival and maintenance in the social environment, directs man’s behavior, serves as a moral and the ethical framework. When asked whether values education, as a process through which values are transmitted and developed, is needed, a positive response will be obtained. But when it comes to the question of who is responsible for carrying out the values education and what its content should be, we will come across many opinions, both scientifically based and those based on personal preferences and beliefs. The school, as an educational institution, is often at the center of the debate on the issue of values education. Starting from those, if the school needs to interfere in morality issues at all, and if so, on which value system should build its own educational principles. The author in this theoretical work deals with the pros and cons of values education in schools, the role and preparedness of the teacher for carrying out the values education and the challenges of values education in a multicultural environment.

,,SCENOGRAFIA” DISCURSULUI DIDACTIC APARŢINÂND MANUALULUI

,,SCENOGRAFIA” DISCURSULUI DIDACTIC APARŢINÂND MANUALULUI

Author(s): Laura-Irina Gavriliu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 32/2014

The terms belonging to theatre have been permanently transferred and adapted to various epistemic spaces, in the pursuit of organizing a coherent explanation pattern, the “script” being the “the speaking stage that the discourse involves in order to be produced and that, in exchange, needs to confirm through its utterance” . “The communication discourse” promotes understanding based on inferential reasoning, structured by the fundamental principles of conscious learning whose results will configure the identity of the cognitive structure of the teachable subject. This primary understanding, pertaining to the logical significance, will be a condition for further acceptance of an interpretation course, based on heuristic processes, on the consistent character of learning, reflected within the relationship with the incorporated information belonging to the student’s knowledge. The passage from potential to achievement is dependent on the intention and desire of the sender who has to translate an interior need. As part of the teaching discourse, “the creative discourse” is the practice context of the student’s creative potential, tributary to the development of the “lecture competence” with reference to Romanian as a school subject, aiming at the conscious approval of the interpretation process. This can be described in terms of labor concerning the creation process, the literature context facilitates the relationship between the education subject and various “paratope” belonging to Romanian and universal literature, through which the reaction to the symbolic valences of the literary works can be obvious. The identification process between the reader and the creation substantiated through a “school trial” should start from the re-enactment of the author’s labor process, through a participative activity associated to the questioning labor, organized according to the textbook score. It has to provide the student an understanding and interpretation pattern in order to guarantee a “successful” reading, that should harmonize various interpretation strategies.

5–7 METŲ VAIKŲ DORINIŲ VERTYBIŲ RAIŠKA EMOCINIU ASPEKTU

Author(s): Placida Jasiūnaitė / Language(s): Lithuanian Issue: 2 (46)/2016

In the light of ever spreading secularism and neoliberalism in the modern global world traditional values (including personal moral values) are undergoing rapid transformation thus the paper addresses the issue of the development of moral values at pre-school age. Assuming that childhood marks the start of the moral and social-emotional development of an individual, the paper seeks to stress early internalisation of fundamental moral values of children aged 5-7. Since children at this age mostly demonstrate internalisation of moral values at behavioural and emotional level, the paper sought to examine the expression of moral values of children aged 5-7 in terms of emotional experiences. Drawing on empirical data collected from parents and pre-school education teachers the author revealed the emotional experiences characteristic of this age group children, and their link with moral values. Some differences in emotional experiences that depend on the child’s gender, place of residence and type of a pre-school institution were also highlighted and compared with some findings of foreign authors.

Author(s): Ly Thi Bac La,Nga Thi Thu Nguyen,Anh Thi Thuy Truong,Thu-Giang Tran,The-Thang Nguyen / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2021

Cohesive speech has commonly become regarded as one of the essential aspects of language development, especially for pre-schoolers. This study aimed to shed light on the cohesive speech of pre-schoolers (CSP) knowledge base. Three hundred ninety-five publications close related cohesive speech research of 5-6-year-old children were collected from the Scopus database. By using the bibliometric approach, the results showed the growth rate of publications over time from 1970 to 2020. In this period, the top five countries, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil and France, have published over 60% of total documents. Besides, four main interests of authors in this field were discovered: “language development”, “speech pathology outcomes”, “speech therapy”, “language intervention”. Among these themes, “speech pathology outcomes” was the most relevant one. Another finding, in recent years, scholars focused on aspects of autism spectrum disorder of pre-schoolers. More importantly, the achievements of this discipline have considerably made positive contributions to various fields both in terms of theory and practice, especially in language and linguistics, speech and hearing, psychology, and medicine. Overall, these studies highlight the need for many other studies, particularly relevant to pre-schooling when new generations should be better prepared to be happy in school by their future cognitive developments.

The aim of this study is to map the thematic landscape of studies on outdoor education. Our process focuses on the following research question: What are the emerging topics in studies on outdoor education? Bibliometric data retrieved from the WOS database, which consists of 555 scientific publications with the keyword "outdoor education” and indexed in SCI-Expended, SSCI, A&HCI, CPCI-S, CPCISSH, BKCI-S, BKCI-SSH or ESCI, was analysed using the descriptive analysis technique. Analysis of the results revealed that there are 10 different types of publications on outdoor education and the most frequently used type is scientific articles, with 365 examples. Keyword network mapping showed that “outdoor education, environmental education and outdoor learning” were terminologies that stood out the most. The analysis of the data was visualized by VOSviewer (Version 1.6.9) visual mapping program and presented with tables and density maps in the findings section. As a conclusion, the study puts forward the main concepts that require particular attention from the outdoor educators. In addition, we hope and expect that the thematic concepts, country distribution of articles and outlining the highly cited studies of this field will contribute to paving the way for future research and identifying the gaps in the literature. This study aims to pinpoint the leading and emerging topics within the outdoor education research field, which has great importance both for the theory and practice of outdoor education.

A CASE STUDY COMPARING GOOD PRACTICE IN THE USE OF PEDAGOGICAL RESOURCES IN HOLOCAUST EDUCATION IN ENGLAND AND REPUBLIKA SRPSKA

Author(s): Danilo Kovač / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

The aim of this study is to analyze good practice in teaching about the Holocaust, comparing the use of pedagogical resources in Republika Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and England (United Kingdom). The paper compares the use of three types of pedagogical resources used in history classes: fictional films, documentaries, and photographs of Holocaust atrocities. Comparison is drawn between a developing and post-conflict society (Republika Srpska) and the well-established and reputable English educational system. By cross-referencing teachers’ and students’ answers, the paper attempts to identify good practice of notable value to be shared and exchanged. The research method firstly incorporated questionnaires, followed by interviews and then lesson observation. Data revealed that teachers in both education systems do not appear to consider all the educational benefits of film screening. The way teachers from England use pictures of Holocaust atrocities and organization of school trips seem to be applicable to the context of Republika Srpska, as well as being useful for classroom practitioners beyond these two education systems.

A COMPARISON OF SCHOOL CLIMATE WITH TIMSS 2015 SCIENCE ACHIEVEMENT AMONG SOUTH-EAST AND EAST ASIAN COUNTRIES

Author(s): Yoon Fah Lay,Khar Thoe Ng / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2021

Since 1995, the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) implemented the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) as an international comparative study. This article aims at identifying the correlations of science classroom instructions with TIMSS science achievement of eighth graders among countries in Southeast Asia and East Asia. The freely downloadable secondary data were analyzed using a plug-in for SPSS, i.e., the International Database (IDB) Analyzer (version 4.0) of IEA using an imputation methodology involving plausible values so that student’s performance can be reported. This study found that Southeast and East Asian countries with high average science achievement adequately emphasized academic success, have teachers with job satisfactions well as facing few challenges, have students with sense of belonging to school. Based on the research findings, policy recommendations were made to the Malaysian Ministry of Education to boost Malaysian eighth graders' science performance in the forthcoming TIMSS studies.

A COMPARISON OF STANDARD AND RETROSPECTIVE PRE-POST TESTING FOR MEASURING THE CHANGES IN SCIENCE TEACHING EFFICACY BELIEFS

A COMPARISON OF STANDARD AND RETROSPECTIVE PRE-POST TESTING FOR MEASURING THE CHANGES IN SCIENCE TEACHING EFFICACY BELIEFS

Author(s): Murat Bursal / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2015

Thirty-nine American and 78 Turkish preservice elementary teachers’ personal science teaching efficacy (PSTE) beliefs were investigated during science methods courses with standard and retrospective pre-post testing methods. Significant differences in the PSTE gain scores, which indicate the changes in the mean PSTE scores from standard/retrospective pretests to the posttest, were found between the standard and retrospective measurements in both samples. Significant differences between the standard and retrospectively measured gain scores were detected among all subgroups under study, which were formed by participants’ PSTE levels and gender. It has been concluded that the differences between the standard and retrospectively measured PSTE gain scores are due to the difference in the nature of these measurement methods and can be seen in most research samples in educational studies around the world. The findings of this study suggest that the response-shift bias should be considered as a common threat to validity for research studies measuring self-efficacy beliefs with the standard pre-post testing method.
