Th e instrumental method of psychophysiological detection of concealed information i.e. examinations using a polygraph (“lie detector”) is widely applied in the Republic of Kazakhstan. According to the Eurasian Polygraph Association Public Association, law enforcement authorities and special services of Kazakhstan introduced at least 75 new polygraphs, diff ering greatly in systems and models in 2015 alone. Taught at the training centre of the association for all law enforcement bodies including Ministry of Internal Aff airs, Kazakhstan National Agency for Corruption Prevention, Kazakhstan Republican Guard, National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Committee for Emergency Situations, General Prosecutor Office, State Revenue Committee Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Defence in 2015 were 168 new polygraph specialists. Almost every practicing polygraph specialist in Kazakhstan attended the seminars, conferences, and training courses organised by our association.

Qualitative indicators are an important element in establishing truth in polygraph examinations. Considering this, a study of the change in the quality of the signal from the photoplethysmograph in subjects who have used nail polish is extremely relevant and requires a comprehensive qualitative study. The paper uses general scientific and empirical methods of observation and experimentation, and is a comprehensive study of the effects of nail polish on the quality of the photoplethysmograph signal. It is the first time that this type of research has been conducted using a comparative analysis of subjects who did and did not use nail polish.

The Integrated Zone Comparison Technique (IZCT) was utilized with computerized polygraph instrumentation and the Academy for Scientific Investigative Training’s Horizontal Scoring System ASIT PolySuite algorithm, as part of a blind study in the detection of deception. This paper represents a synergy analysis of combining fMRI only deception data with each of the three individual physiological parameters that are used in polygraph. They include the electro-dermal response (EDR), pneumo, and cardio measurements. In addition, we compared the detection accuracy analysis using each single parameter by itself. The fMRI score and each individual polygraph parameter score on individual subjects were averaged to establish an overall score.

The research conducted aims at determining the impact of short training on the trainee’s ability to detect deception with the use of non-instrumental methods of detection of deception. As the criminal procedure permits such methods of detection of deception, the results of the research are practical. The research was carried out on a group of participants given the task to watch a video recording and conclude whether the person presented told the truth or lied. Subsequently, the participants were given a short training on both verbal and non-verbal deception cues, illustrated with examples taken from the video they had watched. In the second leg of the test, the participants watched another video and decided whether the person presented was truthful or deceptive (on the grounds of deception cues they spotted). The results showed that the training improved participants’ ability to detect deception by c. 22%.

Strong emotions are among others manifested in the expressive movements (facial expression). Facial expressions are natural and universal by nature. They do not depend on ethnicity, culture, social status, age, etc. Nonetheless, humans are sometimes capable of controlling their facial expressions and hiding their emotions. Simulating emotions is a fundamental acting skill. However, controlling facial impressions takes time. The onset of such a control is delayed by anything from 0.25 to even 0.1 second – the period when the authentic facial expression, adequate to the emotion is demonstrated – and therefore remains imperceptible to an external observer. This short-lived facial expression observed in that short meantime is known as microexpression. FaceReader, designed by Dutch company Noldus (established and directed by Professor Lucas Noldus), is a software package for automatic recognition and analysis of facial expression. As its diagnostic value for validity as well as reliability, that is the level of correct indications, remains unknown, we decided to determine it experimentally and have chosen to run an experiment comparing its diagnostic value with that of a traditional polygraph examination.
