The main goal of this book is the interpretation of the relationship between consent and majority voting, as the basis of the understanding of legitimacy in the modern era and the foundation of modern political philosophy. The author approaches this topic primarily by considering the theories of the classical theorists of the social contract, Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, as well as the criticism of this theory by David Hume. On the other hand, the book deals with the relevance of this topic for contemporary normative political theory and the theory of democracy. Some of the important problems faced by contemporary theories are how it is possible to determine which procedure of political decision-making is, normatively speaking, the most adequate for a political community, and which is the most adequate way to establish such a procedure.

It is the final play of a great master and hence one is tempted to venture a hypothe-sis that, perhaps Shakespeare’s Prospero, like Ulisses in the XI canto of Odysei, speaks to us from the other side, from a dark and mysterious island of the dead, and his theatre is the only way in which we could approach death in the epoch of broken rituals and general disenchantment. Thus, Prospero’s famous line at the end of the play “Our revels now are ended” declares not only the end of the time of performance but refers to a much wider, Kermodian, sense of ending.

Çokdisiplinli Çalışmalarda Posthümanizm, tüm bilimsel ve teknolojik gelişme ve dönüşümleri ele almayı hedeflemekte, posthümanist teorilerin çokludisiplinli çalışmalarda nasıl kavramsallaştırıldığını insanı evrenin merkezine koyan Batı toplumlarının yüzyıllardır ideolojisini ve zihniyetini besleyen insan/doğa, insan/insan olmayan ikili düşüncesini kökten sorgulayarak incelemektedir. Bu bağlamda bu kitap, posthümanizm ile çeşitli farklı disiplinler arasındaki ilişkiyi posthümanist kuramsal yaklaşımlar çerçevesinde derinlemesine incelerken, posthüman yaşam tarzlarının yansımalarını çok disiplinli çalışmalarda tartışmaktadır. Bu tür seçilmiş çalışmalarda posthümanizmin feminizm, ekoeleştiri, biyopolitika ve transhümanizm gibi kuramlarla ve sinema, performans dansları, biyo-sanat, felsefe, mühendislik, uluslararası ilişkiler, siyaset gibi disiplinlerle olan yakın ilişkisi, bu kuramlara katkıları ve bu kuramların posthümanist kuramlardan nasıl beslendiği doğrultusunda incelenmektedir. Posthümanist bakış açısının, insanın artık istisnai bir varlık olarak değil, gezegeni paylaştığı diğer türlerle doğup ortaya çıkan ve gelişen bir “birlik” olarak gördüğü yaşadığımız dünyayı nasıl açıkladığı ve algıladığı bu disiplinlerle sorgulanmaktadır. A human being gets organized in a nation, as Aristotle says, for “a good life”. However, according to him, one has to differentiate between “a good citizen” and “good man”. The history of philosophy has created various polis conceptions as a result of the fact that a human being, in its cognition, cannot situate itself in a position of the one who knows an “objective” good, “truth”. Each cognition is just a “vision” and interpretation of the world. Thus, one has to assume that a reflection on culture equals a reconstruction of these “visions”. This is a history of ideas. Such a reconstruction is also an interpretation. The situation gets complicated in the post-world. Traditional languages lose their significance in a global world of mass culture. And that means that the status of the history of ideas, this interpretation of interpretations, gets too unclear these days.

This "outward looking" view also allows us a reverse perspective: turning the look to ourselves becomes an occasion to see ourselves through the eyes of the other, to rethink the specifics of the foreign and the own/native. The point of view of one who is sufficiently "other", distanced from events and paradigms, can give us an unbiased assessment of them. At the same time, he is sufficiently near to "us" for his analyzes to be relevant to "our" reality as well.

The book Philosophers in the City was created on the occasion of the centenary of the founding of the Philosophical Seminar of the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno. It is dedicated to the reminder of the first nine philosophers, who gradually held the position of head of the philosophical seminary, the later department of philosophy. Poszukiwacz sensu wśród strzępków historii. Wokół „Z. Po-wieści” Mieczysława Porębskiego

The book is devoted to the reconstruction and analysis of the philosophy of history and philosophy of culture, an outline of which Mieczysław Porębski presented in Z. Po-wieść (1989). This work is sometimes classified as a postmodern “professorial novel”, while the author of A seeker of sense among the strands of history tries to demonstate that the bricolage poetics is mainly staffage, as the distinguished art historian and theorist was motivated by the desire to reflect on the historical process and the meaning of European culture for contemporaries. The leitmotif of Z. is the wandering of the title character through the history and literature of the Old Continent, considered in the monograph i.a. in relation to the composition, the world presented, the autothematism, the philosophical assumptions and the ideological meaning of the novel. The authoress analyzes the figure of the protagonist, genological issues, the problem of historiography and narrative, and the textual implication of the authorial subject. She considers the dialectic between the search for universal truths about human nature and the imperative to convey the truth of one’s own time, and furthermore presents the futuristic predictions of the author of Iconosphere. Finally, she shows the hermeneutic perspective as the best one to interpret Z., as it is revealed in the actions and utterances of the protagonist himself, who seeks the essential message of tradition and the meaning of historical experience.

Kobiety i milczenie w "Pervigilium Veneris"

The book is the first Polish monograph on the anonymous poem Pervigilium Veneris, which has had many literary and instrumental-vocal interpretations. Analyze of the unusual similarities of phrases and motifs that appear in Pervigilium and in Nemesianus’ poetry led to confirming Monceaux’s thesis that the author of the work may be Nemesianus, a Carthaginian poet writing in the 3rd century AD. The author analyzes the techniques of portraying Diana and Venus and the sisters Philomela and Procne, comparing them with prefigurations contained in poems by Lucretius, Catullus, Statius and Nemesianus among others. The subject of reflection are also the enigmatic words Terei puella and Illa cantat, nos tacemus, which refer to the motif of women’s silence, strongly emphasized in ancient literature.

Edukacja filozoficzna w Indiach wczesnego okresu upaniszadowego

This publication is the first Polish-language presentation of the history of philosophical education in ancient India. The titular issue deserves special attention, as it goes back to the well-documented sources of this phenomenon and the beginnings of Hindu philosophical thought, revealing the roots of yoga, which today enjoy such popularity. Although the book is scientific in its nature, it is addressed to a broad audience interested in Indian culture. It shows how the phenomenon of philosophical education came into being and became deeply rooted in the original initiation structures. It discusses issues related to: (1) the proper goal of education, focusing on the issues of human suffering, liberation from it, obstacles that stand in the way of achieving this goal, and finally, human cognitive potential; (2) selection of the subjects for education, including the issues of mythical origins, the issues of cognition, atman and brahman, states of consciousness and the issue of identity or the law of karma; (3) methods of educational work, taking into account the issues of initiation and the issue of direct experience of a mystical nature, the role of words in the teaching process or the beginnings of the yoga tradition. What emerges from the narrative is the rich world of philosophical explorations, full of enthusiasm and affirmation of life and faith in the possibility of achieving unconditional happiness - a world that respects tradition and boldly seeks new ways to fulfill its potential in the best possible way.

Although multiculturalism as a concept within the humanities is a somewhat exhausted topic, we want to define the space that remains unfilled within the multicultural approach in Czech society. Our aim is to draw attention to the possibilities of rethinking multicultural ideology on the basis of a critical approach to it and to the possibilities of its application in the spheres of education and training. We want to show how an overemphasis on ethnic differentiation devalues the goals of multiculturalism based on fair access even across other types of differences. Unless we set out ways of talking about the ideas of multiculturalism without narrowing the issue to ethnicity, we have no hope of adopting multicultural education as a necessary part of the school curriculum, as a platform for a new social paradigm.

The book is an attempt to delineate the controversies over the conception of Christian philosophy, as practiced in Poland in the period of 1950–1989. The forum for the exchange of ideas – waged by the advocates of classical philosophy, championing the Aristotelian and Thomistic tradition, and the propagators of contemporary philosophy – was provided by widely available religious magazines: Tygodnik Powszechny, Znak, Życie i Myśl, Więź. Due to its journalistic tenor, the controversy proved a disappointment for philosophers; it has, however, turned out to be a significant phenomenon in the post-war intellectual history of Polish Catholicism. The author presents it within a theoretical and functional framework in an investigation carried out at the intersection of history of philosophy, intellectual history, and historical sociology.

Martina Steer napisała pierwszą całościową analizę fenomenu Mendelssohna jako zbiorowego miejsca pamięci od momentu jego śmierci w 1786 r. do czasów narodowego socjalizmu w Niemczech. Na przykładzie obchodów jubileuszowych organizowanych na jego cześć w Niemczech, Polsce i USA autorka pokazuje związki między pamięcią o Mendelssohnie w tych krajach i przedstawia go jako jedno z najsilniej oddziałujących żydowskich miejsc pamięci. Martina Steer pracuje na Uniwersytecie Wiedeńskim, gdzie zajmuje się historią Żydów i Europy. Wykładała także na Uniwersytecie Europejskim we Florencji, była stypendystką licznych instytucji naukowych w Europie i Stanach Zjednoczonych. Jest autorką biografii Berthy Badt-Strauss, jednej z najbardziej znanych niemieckich dziennikarek międzywojnia i jednocześnie działaczki syjonistycznej.
