Through the ages, men have historically filled the roles associated with the world of bookmaking; however, women have also had valuable roles. While the role of women has not always been the physical creation of books, they have been associated with both the authors and readers of books. The aim of this article is to integrate information about the role of women in printing and typography throughout history.

Tytus Laskiewicz (1884-1964) was the head of the library of the Lvov University of Technology. His contribution to the transfer of its collections to a new building and the organisation of library work there was exceptional. He published 4 catalogues presenting its collections. He performed the same function at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, where he built the book collection from scratch, dealt with the development of the collection and made it accessible. His duties also involved building issues. Furthermore, Laskiewicz collaborated with the local library community. For his accomplishments in the field of librarianship, he was awarded the Gold Cross of Merit and the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. The article was developed mainly on the basis of source documents, including materials previously unknown by the scientific community, such as Kronika Biblioteki c.k.Szkoły Politechnicznej we Lwowie (in the collection of the Stefanyk Library in Lviv).

At the end of the 19th century, an artistic movement called Arts and Crafts emerged in Great Britain. Its premises were eagerly accepted both in other European countries and abroad, e.g., in the United States. One of the examples of workshops that identified with the ideas of this movement was the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshop). They were founded in Vienna in 1903 by Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser. They produced beautiful utilitarian objects designed by artists and made by high-class craftsmen. One of the aspects of Wiener Werkstätte’s activity regarded issuing publications and related graphic designs. The article discusses this area of the studio’s operation, pointing to examples of individual products.

Pursuant to Article 5 (3) of the July 20, 2018 Act, The Law on Higher Education and Science, which specifies academic disciplines in the fields of science and art, the September 20, 2018 Regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education reclassified the academic disciplines in Poland’s higher education system. Selected disciplines were consolidated, reducing the total number of disciplines in the sciences and arts from 102 to 42. In this paper, I analyse the consequences of these consolidations, using one of the newly created disciplines, Communication and Media Studies, as a case study. Communication and Media Studies is an aggregate of three previously independent disciplines, namely, Library and Information Science, Media Studies and Cognition, and Social Communication Studies. Analysis specifically focuses on the discipline’s nomenclature, its aims and objectives, methodology (content), and human resources. These are examined in relation to similar disciplines in world of science and arts (context).

The archive documents of the Krakow Bookbinding Guild confronted with the legal acts in force allow us to examine the activity of the guild in the first half of the 19th century. At that time, the guild organisation still held a monopoly on the practice of crafts, and the poor economic condition of the city did not allow for the development of this trade. The number of members of the guild and bookbinding workshops was small, usually no more than ten, and the number of apprentices they employed was also small. In the majority of cases, the workshops were handed down from one generation to the next. In addition, the influx of foreign professionals and master’s qualifications to the guild was small, limited by high registration fees. At the same time, the Krakow bookbinding centre educated many students, and many apprentices from foreign centres arrived in the city

This paper analyses the use of the proverb, Nie taki diabeł straszny, jak go malują, in printed texts written and published in the second half of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century. These works are varied in topic and genre and are composed of non-serial publications and articles, coursebooks, collections of exercises and tasks, and scientific, popular science and journalistic papers. The database of titles was compiled from library catalogues available online and from searches conducted on other Internet sources. During the analysis, attention was paid to how the titles were constructed (proverb as the only element of the title, proverb in anteposition or postposition to the second component of the title). The author describes which form of the proverb, Nie taki diabeł straszny, jak go malują (full, canonic or deliberately modified) has been introduced to the title, as well as which factor was decisive in using the paremia in each title (with reference to the global meaning of the proverb and its key component, diabeł – devil).

The current paper aims to introduce one of the first incunabula printed by Johannes Gutenberg, namely, the Türkenkalender. The six folio calendar was printed in December 1454, in order to be in use during the following year, 1455. According to Gutenberg´s intention, the Türkenkalender was intended to be a warning against the Ottoman danger shortly after the fall of Constantinople on May 29th 1453. The paper also includes contemporary testimonies about the last days of the Byzantine Imperial capital from two different witnesses, both members of the high clergy, one of them being Leonard Archbishop of Mytilene in Chios, and the other one being Isidore Metropolitan of Kiev. They belonged to those European writers who called the sovereigns as well as the nobility of Europe to defend Christianity. Following the same path and the same message, the inner structure of the Türkenkalender (or Calendar turcesc as it is also known in Romanian) includes twelve separate poems arranged at the beginning of each of the twelve months of the year, poems aimed to persuade the European rulers to take actions against the Turks. At the end of the calendar, Gutenberg included the oldest formula ever printed of the New Year greetings – Eyn gut selig nuwe Jar.

The article presents: a) updating the rules for evaluating journals in the evaluation model developed in the Pracownia Naukoznawstwa IHN PAN (Science Studies and Science-of-Science Unit of the Institute for History of Science, Polish Academy of Sciences), b) scoring journals in the history of science according to the lists of journals of the MNiSW (2017), MEiN (2021), MEiN (2023), PN IHN PAN (2022) and PN IHN PAN (2023), c) comparison of the scoring of journals in history and history of science in the lists of journals: ministerial and PN IHN PAN, as well as Scopus, DOAJ, Index Copernicus International, PKP Preservation Network and Keepers Register.The conclusion of the article is an open appeal to the Minister of Education and Science to award, in the next update of the ministerial list of journals, 200 points to the journal “Studia Historiae Scientiarum” and 140 to the journal “Kwartalnik Historii Nauki i Techniki”, because these journals, devoted to the history of science, are not inferior in terms of achievements to Polish historical journals, which have already obtained 200 and 140 points by the decision of the Minister of Education and Science of July 17, 2023.

Tourism found one of its earliest forms in the long journey sunder taken by noblemen to various parts of Europe. Called “The Grand Tour”, they began in the 16th century and flourished in the 17th and 18thcenturies. The term “Grand Tour” was first used in 1670 but became widespread in the 18th century, especially after 1749 when Thomas Nugent's four-volume guidebook made it the title of a book. This paper traces the place of libraries along the routes described in that work. The object of the study is the libraries, and the subject is their place and importance through the eyes of the European traveler of the era that marked the birth of modern tourism.The paper aims to argue for the potential of libraries as eye-catching destinations, long before the term “library tourism” was coined, and the task is to trace all the libraries described in “The Grand Tour”. It is concluded that an understanding of the value of libraries as visitor attractions is evident from the survey, and the descriptions give a good insight into the solid foundations of library tourism – an uncut diamond with huge tourism potential.

The article investigates the registry and archival processes employed in the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association. The article analyses registry and archival rules of conduct of the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association, as well as the functions and character of its Historical Commissions, with particular emphasis on the activity of the Historical Commission operating at the Jan Kasprowicz Poznań-Wilda District of the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association. Presenting the contents of the fond and the promotional activities undertaken by the Historical Commission warrants the thesis that the Commission is a specific type of social archive in the registry and archival structure of the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association, whose main task is curating grade A historical memorabilia.

The focus of this work is reviewing the most important regulations concerning the libraries of higher schools and determining their organization and functioning. After the analysis of quoted legislative works in the area of the law and library functioning, numerous conclusions suggest themselves concerning the place of libraries in the traditional and digital world. It turns out that the work of libraries and librarians is greatly influenced first of all by regulations within the limits of higher schools law-making. In the world of modern technologies, there is overwhelming influence of the copyright laws and the regulations connected with the country’s informatization and the policy of intellectual property protection, directed by the European Union. The whole of the discussed issue leads to a sad conclusion that, despite considerable involvement of the librarians’ environment (which is proved by the number of publications and reflections exchanged in journals), Polish legislation for higher schools libraries is not prepared to fulfil a modern role.

The article presents the organizational, editorial and publishing activity of the scientists of the Lvov Polytechnic in the area of scientific research and popularization of science and technology. The paper characterizes some of the periodicals, specifies their goals, programmes, and structure; it also presents the publishers, editors and authors, and discusses the main themes of their publications. The increase in the number of scientific and popular press publications, and making new contacts between the Lvov Polytechnic and other scientific centres contributed to the development of science and to the popularization of knowledge of technology and natural sciences. The paper draws attention to the most characteristic feature of the publications, i.e. the fact that their creation, editing and printing were directly connected with the activity of the Lvov Polytechnic. High professional standards of the periodicals are evidence of the achievements of the polytechnic scientists in the field of scientific-technological journalism.

The publication of ordos and directories in the Diocese of Lublin was a standard procedure from the beginning of the diocese, that is, from the first decade of the 19th century. The external shape and publishing order were modelled on similar prints published in the Chełm Diocese, of which the Lublin Diocese became the successor. During the period of partition, both ordos and directories were published almost annually. A search revealed that this was done in the interwar era without any omissions. Relatively easy to access today, publications from 1919–1939 are collected in a complete set in several Lublin libraries and archives, but are also disseminated in online form thanks to an initiative to digitize them. Ordos and directories of the Diocese of Lublin were published only in Lublin. They were written in Latin and Polish. The ordos included primarily the liturgical calendar, but also a range of other information relating to worship, as well as some of the more commonly used prayers. The directories included information about the institutions and clergy of the Lublin Diocese that was useful in the work of the bishop’s curia and parish offices. Regardless of the reliable resource base of the Lublin Archdiocesan Archives, which enables in-depth studies of Lublin’s church organization and its religious life, ordos and directories remain important source publications and interesting objects of research.

The following article by Andrzej Mirga is republished from a special issue of ‘Etnografia Polska’ journal 22(2) 1978 devoted to Roma (at that time consistently referred to as ‘Gypsies’) and Romani studies. The author presents the image of the non-Roma people widespread among the Carpathian Roma – inhabitants of a Roma settlement in the Polish Spiš region. The argumentation is based on the dichotomy ‘Rom – Gadjo’. The article is published with the permission of the Author and the editors of ‘Etnografia Polska’.
