The memory crisis, the intuition game and the fictionalization of the document in the paradigm of Post-Truth

The purpose of this paper is to analyze one of the practical aspects of changing the paradigm with the introduction of the operative concept of post-truth. It is about the mechanism of the functioning of a relative truth in the case of rewriting history and also in the literary writing on historical themes. As an application domain, we have chosen the Phanariot period, a core of interest after 2010, on the editorial market. In this context, we will punctually refer to the social micro-history essays of Constanța Vintilă-Ghițulescu, and to the historical novels of Doina Ruști.

Elements of new historicism and historiographic metafiction in Rohinton Mistry’s A Fine Balance

New historicism and historiographic metafiction represent two of the most recent trends in the study of literary works which developed in the 1980s as a reaction to structuralism and post-structuralism’s rejection of history altogether. They both mark a return to the story itself and the importance of history. However, it is not official history that they are mainly interested in but those stories of the excluded that have been left out by legitimate historical discourse. History is used as a subtext in Rohinton Mistry’s “A Fine Balance” where the destiny of all characters is entwined with major events from national history. I argue that in their focus on synchronic analysis new historicism and historiographic metafiction lose sight of historical change.

Le mythe personnel de Charles Baudelaire dans ses Journaux intimes. Fusées. Mon cœur mis à nu: enjeux modernes et actuels de la psychocritique

Baudelaire’s inner world (reality) expressed by his own creation (the leading themes, the” métaphores obsédantes”, etc.) in “Journaux intimes. Fusées. Mon coeur mis à nu”, reveals a new universal reality of the existence of semi-conscious self, personnel myth of the creator and both the creation and creator double nature. Due to his metaphorical networks and his complex way of expressing the reality as well as his inner world, Charles Baudelaire’s creation offers the necessary conceptual framework to develop both a semi-psycho analytic criticism and a semi-psycho biographic analyze in order to validate the relevance of his personnel myth and to underline the pertinence of such universal myth of the genius writer. Due to the complex force of construction, Baudelaire’s personnel myth has an important archetypal function which was revealed by other creators through its double nature, the “androgynéité”. Therefore, the transition from the “sui generis” personnel myth to the one of the writer is made, by underlining the androgyny spirit, “the complex expression of a genius” (as stated by Ladjali).

The critical reception of William Faulkner’s The Sound and The Fury across time

The aim of the present paper is to explore the changes that occurred in the critical reception of Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury, which, after a long period of neglect, by now has become his most widely discussed work among literary critics. I will focus on three, historically and geographically distinct moments in the critical history of the novel: its reception at the time of its first publication in 1929 by the American reading public; American literary criticism written in the 1950’s, when more extensive discussions of the work started to appear; and the reception of the novel by the Romanian reading public after 1971, when the Romanian translation was published. Drawing on Hans Robert Jauss’s aesthetic of reception (1970, 1982), I seek to answer two questions with regard to the critical reception of the novel. First, I would like to see whether the literary career of The Sound and the Fury follows the trajectory from initial rejection to wide acceptance with increasing aesthetic value, as predicted by Jauss’s theory. Second, I am interested in finding out whether those features of the novel that were initially perceived as unfamiliar and incomprehensible were indeed incorporated into the later readers’ horizon of expectations, so that they no longer posed problems for later readers.

Death Reloaded: A rendition of intrinsic disposition in Matei Călinescu’s Un altfel de jurnal

What is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of death? Among the popular responses, based on common knowledge, it would be: ‘the end,’ closure, finality of both body and/or spirit (depending on beliefs). But could it be possible to regard death as a foundation for identity narrative? Can it represent a beginning? Can death define life, sustain it, and even prolong it? In the following essay, I attempt to identify circumstances in which life is an aftermath of death, not in physical assumption, but intrinsic evolution. I will be looking at Matei Călinescu’s existential path as confessed in Un altfel de jurnal: Ieșirea din timp [Another type of journal: Stepping out of time] and I will be focusing on the consequences and influence of death while justifying the self.

Childhood in Romanian literature – a beneficial delay? History playing the two faces God

Many Western academics have expressed their views on the childhood crisis arisen in the last decades of 20th century, as a consequence of both globalization and the ideology of capitalism, as well as of the impact of media. However, for the Eastern societies these changes emerge years later. Using the representations of childhood in Romanian novels (mostly autobiographical) which have as background the socialist ages (from the ʼ60s to the end of the ʼ80s), I suggest that it might have been exactly this delay which made possible the conservation of a happier childhood, despite the totalitarian regime. Many Romanian writers living their childhood during communism recount this period in post-totalitarian democracy, outlining no crisis, but the opposite.

Intertextuality and Thomas Pynchon’s entropy

This paper discusses relevant aspects raised by Linda Hutcheon in her famous book A Poetics of Postmodernism: History, Theory, Fiction, and aspects of Thomas Pynchon’s work that illustrate intertextuality through the discussion of a scientific concept in a literary work – entropy. The view towards intertextuality has been changed since the 1969 essay of Julia Kristeva. The exploration of scientific visions of the world is a major concern for Thomas Pynchon. Entropy has become an important metaphor of the contemporary world’s tendency towards redundancy and incoherence. Pynchon’s vision is revealed through his complicated plots, his idealistic characters and a questioning narrative voice. The short story “Entropy” and aspects of the novel “V” are further discussed in the paper. The image of literature as a network of texts was intensified by Derrida’s argument about the “impossibility of living outside the text”.

Wyobrażeniowa poetyka zła w utworach Voltaire’a

In his descriptions of this “world going round”, Voltaire touches upon the problem of evil, using mimesis and his trademark irony as tools. Scream, anxiety, and confusion over this “scandal for philosophers” are reflected in his polemics with Leibniz. The spectacle of evil presents itself in Voltaire’s symbolic caricature of marionettes – in order to confront the ontological onus of evil with philosophical speculation. h e mechanical descriptions, deformed characters, and grotesque juxtaposition of lucky and unlucky situations found in his “obsessive metaphors” make up his “aesthetics of ugliness”, whose attractive quality seems to unravel some of Voltaire’s myth. His “obsessive metaphors” of evil and his style negating the reality, world, and man create a theatre of nihilism and hopelessness in which Voltaire co-suffers with his actors. The tragic and the comic are wed in the oxymoron of irony – the mood of the spirit – under the mask of which Voltaire hides the secrets of his imagination.

Paraboliczny wymiar prologu do Sędziwoja Józefa Bohdana Dziekońskiego

The article interprets the metaphor of Phoenix in Józef Bohdan Dziekoński’s novel Sędziwoj. The symbolism of the mythical figure offers a structural frame which unites the whole novel. This motif, which appears in the opening and closing part of the text, is a parabolic representation of the characters’ fortunes and constitutes quasi-biographies of Kosmopolita and Sędziwoj. Also the very introduction, which is based on the Herder’s legend, outlines the entire novel. Finally, drawing from cultural studies, the article frequently refers to symbolism and alchemy.

Ironia modernistyczna i nowy rodzaj biografii: Ludzie epoki Wiktorii Lyttona Stracheya

The article argues that Lytton Strachey’s Eminent Victorians (1918) exemplifies the use of modernist irony, as defined by AlanWilde in Horizons of Assent: Modernism, Postmodernism, and the Ironic Imagination (1981). The Polish translation of Strachey’s book, which includes only two of the four original essays, while losing the ironic undertones of the title in Ludzie epoki Wiktorii, keeps some significant characteristics discussed by Wilde, such as disjunction, paradox and parataxis. Strachey’s disjunctive irony, his awareness of life’s incongruities and disparities, his perspective of distance and detachment, as well as his employment of narrative techniques suggesting discontinuity, fleeting impression and subjectivity – all lie at the root of the new form of biography as a genre.
